Psyka: The ghandi issue came to my attention after an article in the Guardian a year ago or so. There were protests in South Africa because the government wanted to put up a statue of Ghandi and the locals didn't appreciate it. I couldn't dig that one up anymore, doing a search for "Ghandi racism" would probably have a lot of info, but I don't have any primary sources on hand for you. Good luck

I deleted it. You had no reason to hear any of that from me.

I think that who says the quote can be as telling as the quote. Mixomatosis' judgement was sound posting what he did. It certainly made me think.

Sometimes bad people create good things. If you seperate the good thing from the person who created, then you can benefit. An evil man can make a good movie, and i can still enjoy that movie. The same is true of quotes and everything else.

Ulitmately, I think its up to the interpreter to decide how a philosophy can be beneficially applied to life.

If you have a negative asscociation with who said it you might automatically reject something useful as moonshoe pointed out.

If you have a positive asscoiation with who said it, you may accept something and apply it resulting in a detriment of sorts as mix pointed out.

Are you going to blame or credit the source , or your own ability to discern and apply for yourself objectivly?

By taking the source away, you only have yourself to credit or blame for what you chose to use and how it resulted. Again, I am glad he inspired me to remove who said what.

I am big on making yourself first cause ( source ) accountable.

I did agree with what mix pointed out. I did not agree that just because Ghandi made a rascist statement that every thing else he has ever said should be thrown in the trash with it.

Whats that saying, Don't through the baby out with the bath water?

Thats what I was getting at in the ego post and here it is again.

It seems there is an idea that there is a false self and a true self and yet the true self isn't allowed to be acknowledged as an individual self or it would be the false ego self doing that. its a no self self aware of itself.

This topic just goes in circles to me.

Philosophical quotes don't have to be positive or have positive associations. Sometimes a raw, unvarnished dose of reality is required to elicit a positive change in an individual.

I agree with that huehue. As a last resort, I to have dealt a dose of unvarnished reality to myself and others when change in a new direction was called for.

That can be added to the list of catalysts. It doesn't mean philosophy is a useless one. They are both useful catalysts for positive or in some cases negative change.

To call humans 'rational beings' does injustice to the term, 'rational.'  Humans are capable of rational thought, but it is not their essence.  Humans are animals, beasts with complex brains.  Humans, more often than not, utilize their cerebrum to rationalize what their primal instincts, their preconceived notions, and their emotional desires have presented as goals - humans are rationalizing beings.
