Ancient Master / Modern Master
    #3102949 - 09/07/04 11:25 AM (19 years, 7 months ago)

Ancient Disicple: What is the Buddah nature?

Ancient Master: *slaps disciple hard across the face.*

Ancient Audience: "Oooh, how wise and deep the Master is!"

Modern Disicple: *Proposes a baseless and inconsistent hypothesis.*

Modern Master: *Deconstructs statements.*

Modern Audience: "Oooh, how abusive and uncaring the Master is!"

There was a story in a book I read, I think it was 'Zen and the Kingdom of Heaven'. Anyway this woman's husband died and the Zen master guy was very compassionate toward the woman, etc.. A year later the woman shows up again and the Zen master asks how she's doing...'Oh not too well. I am just so sad my husband is gone...'.

The Zen master unleashes a furious slap right accross her face. 'The time for being sad is over! Get on with your life now!'

By the way, this was in the modern west too. As far as I know she didn't file a lawsuit.

We need more guys like that around.

Actually, that is backwards... usually the just enlightened disicple was slapping the master in reply to a question, not the other way around.

sudden violence is a buhdist teaching (only with diciples)

normally one will see clearly if they are about to die, right before they die.

for instance you get in a car crash, and just before it happens there is a moment of crystal clarity, a zen moment. one can find enlightenment in that moment.

when after following a wise buddha master for years, so peaceful and quite, one night after tea, he gets up with provocation and begins to beat you to blood, you very well may become enlightened.

peace

Ah, so you believe that you are familiar with every single interaction between Ancient Master and Disciple?

makes a funny point but misses a universe of reality:
eternally the true buddhist master
is actually nature's
disciple
-it's very hard to get
a student to teach properly
but you can barter for time with an equal.

There is no such thing as an ancient or modern "master". There are only people. Some are farther into their quest than others, but all have something to teach. "Master" used in the manner as refering to a Guru type individual is a description of a person with an ego problem.

someone on these boards once posted a 'story' about this sort of thing, which I have since adapted slightly to actually give it some meaning:

Quote:

a zen master and two of his desciples where walking through the woods one day when the master stopped in his tracks, picked up a stick, held it out to one of the desciples, and asked in a calm nochalant fashion: "what is this?"

the desciple took pause to ponder what his master was getting at, and without hesitation the master struck him across the head as hard as he could

he then turned to the other desciple and shouted: "what is this?!?"

the second desciple imediately requested to examine the stick, and the master complied

the desciple then struck the master with the stick as hard as he could, and then calmly stated: "it is a tool for teaching the importance of feeling into a situation without wasting valuable time picking it apart"

the master was pleased

Master of what? What are all of these "masters" masters of anyway?

My daughtered mastered toilet training a bit back ooooooooh ahhhhhhhhh

Do people question this masters crap? What does it really mean? I'm with Zero7a1 here. Question authority and "masters" .

A true master is master of no one and mastered by no one! I don't think such a being ever existed in it's purity or ever will. We are too interconnected and influenced with each other and like power or lack of it in some peoples cases.

I had a spiritual mentor type friend many moons back who would slap me with 'balls of light" I called them. She would nail me with one when I was being spiritually dense. I resented her at the time, then came to appreciate it and nowwwwww I think she was an egomaniac being abusive pure and simple.

She had aquired "light power" and misused it to boost herself above others. In spacedragons post , there was a debate about the illuminati meaning illuminated and it was asked how the illuminati could be bad if they were illuminated. Light without universal love is not cozy and fuzzy and warm. It can be very cold.

Just my two sense on "masters".

Actually there ARE masters. Infact, we (us earthlings) are their slaves. If you take a high dose shroom trip YOUR master (each master has his own slave) will probably show up. They look quite a bit like elephants (trunk), if you know what i?m talking about.

Also, they play dirty tricks on your heart, ie. they will make your heart racing until you utterly submit to their will.

Nope, which is why I included the word 'usually', as in most often, not as in always.

It?s funny how people tend to deny [even the possibility] the reality of anything which doesn?t fit their prefered notion of what tripping is really about. Especially if it?s something REALLY *uncomfortable*.

no clue what you mean by 'the trunks'

nor have I ever had the misfortune of experiencing any sort of dominating entity

the only 'master' I've ever experienced is the totality of the all - zine (shroom) as I've come to know it
