For what it’s worth I agree with all the suggestions that the sub is going anaerobic post pasteurisation. I use 1 litre mason jars with filter patches and pasteurise in a water bath. 2 hours once core temp has been reached. When I tried this in bags with manure it went anaerobic quickly and smelled baaad if I didn’t allow oxygen in. My solution was borrowed, seal the bag and peg the top of the unrolled bag on a line so it pulled in oxygen through the filter patch.

The other solution I found is to avoid manure and use Faht’s recipe for sub. I’ve not had that go anaerobic ever.

Yeah, I'm probably gonna switch over to Fahtty subs... :awesomenod: Does he have a link to his recipe, or is it buried somewhere in this thread?

I think you said you are using black Kow?  Personally, I never trusted that’s stuff, because it’s basically floor sweepings and mixed with urine and such (presuming they haven’t changed anything about the way they package it nowadays).  That would be my uneducated guess as to bacterial vectors.

Not sure how easy it would be for you to gather some filed aged cow, and/or horse manure, however that’s what I would consider trying.

Edit to add: some bacteria can survive pasteurization.

Yeah, that's what I used... At this point I'd almost rather go with the non-manure substrates the other folks have good success with. I don't have a source for field-aged manure, so that would require making a new friend and I don't like doing that at my old age... :laugh2: You know, if it does have urine in it, that would explain the suspected low pH issue. Would worm castings be a good replacement for the manure, or Black Soldier Fly larva castings?

Yeah, a non manure substrate does seem the way to go if you can get away with it.  I live in farm country, so sourcing field aged manure is not an issue for me as I understand it can be for some.  Best of luck to you, sir.

Do the fermenting/sour bags colonize at all? Manure based sub kept under somewhat low oxygen conditions does start to smell rank but it will go away with progressing colonization. This started to be discussed repeatedly when people were following Joc's advice of aging pasteurized sub for a few days to build up microbe count. Just thinking of this as a possibility as I don't see why your machine wouldn't work.

Eventually they will colonize a good portion of the blocks, but no full colonization. I usually spawn later the same day or the next after pasteurizing. After the temps drop to room temp of course. This is the last batch I spawned, and we're now a week after spawning and the grains still haven't recovered. Yet there is no molds or visible contams.

Ah OK, that's really not good then, recovery should happen within a couple of days at most.

So the final word on the 3rd test run is this. I decided against using the probe because there was no way to program the machine to hold the temp for a set amount of time. The only option for the probe is to shut off the cycle once the internal temp reaches whatever it's set at. After flattening out the bag to loosen and thin the sub, I cooked it at 155F, 100% steam, for 2.5 hours (same as the last batch), and it rested until the air temp dropped to 86F. I then pulled the bag out and put it on a shelf so it could draw in some fresh air through the filter patch as it cooled. Brought it home and have it hanging from a line to pull in more fresh air. I have maybe half a cup of spawn left in a jar from when I spawned the last batch a week ago, so I'll use that to spawn it after letting the sub sit for a couple days. I plan on kneading the sub inside the bag a few times before spawning too so the sub stays aerated.

I think this will be a good test because I kept the volume and cook temp/time the same, and only changed 6 small vectors:

1. Pre-sealed the bag.
2. The loosening and flattening of the substrate.
3. Removed the plastic container so the bag gets more direct airflow around it.
4. Allowed air to enter the bag after cooling.
5. Delayed spawning.
6. Pre-spawn aeration of substrate

Technically, numbers 2 and 3 combine to test whether or not I was getting enough heat penetration. And numbers 4-6 combine to test if the substrate needs to "settle" before spawning. I'll actually be able to tell if this test is better before I spawn, since I'll smell it when I cut it open to spawn.

A few ziplocks.  This first one is one of the trays on the reptile heating pad… wrote about that Here. Super happy with how all the trays on it are doing.  There’s no indication that it’s drying the subs out at all.  Trays don’t feel light, fruits are cruising along np.  I think it’ll work well for the winter

This last tray I found some mold in the front corner pretty early on and broke off enough of the area that I salvaged a good portion of the flush

I've seen a lot of mentions about black kow throughout threads. Personally i use this stuff (below) and its been fantastic. I do CVG+ even though the G is pretty obsolete. For me it works every time. tek is in my signature and contains amazon links to all products used. I use the oven and meat thermometer for pasteurization and like Puff, I run ~150F for 2+ hours.

Its listed as manure compost, but its just manure, nothing else. Here is an Instagram comparison video between black kow and brut

Just my baby 2 cents.

Jake, I was doing a little thinking (I know.  Dangerous, right?) and I think if you were to take your black kow manure and lay it out in the sun until it became dry on a tarp or sheet of plastic in the yard the urine and whatever else may be lurking in the bag would be evaporated away.

Can’t say for sure if this would work, however it is what I do for manure that I’ve collected from stalls, and/or manure I’ve had to collect that wasn’t fully dry yet.  Just spitballing here.

Only issue I have had with Black Cow is it contains a lot of sticks. This is easily remedied by sifting it through a piece of 1/4" hardware cloth.

50/50 Black Cow / coir worked great in my grows.

Yeah, I pre-sifted a whole bag and keep it in a 5 gallon bucket. What is your pasteurizing process, and do you get that sweet and sour smell after pasteurizing?

I can try this on the next batch. I have a screen sifting box I can do that with.
