Isn't anyone doing no-prep grains anymore? I use Yoshi's tek with oats and have had a lot of success. A little starch in the jar doesn't really bother me.

If it works and you have fruits in hand that is all that matters. Personally I hate oats and I'm not really a fan of no prep either. But at the end if the day no one needs to be satisfied with the outcome other than the cultivator. If you're happy with the outcomes that is all that matters.

I no prep the crap out of my millet, a la Crack, and once you go crack there's no going back! Can't be prodded with a big prodder to go back to simmering grains.

@nokumana: Yeah, no prep millet and WBS using Crack's ratios and Yoshi's ratios. I did no prep for 50lbs on this last bag, no major issues due to prep not working.

With the WBS I have, it has cracked wheat. Yoshi has higher water ratios for wheat, but I kept it the same as millet. Perhaps penetrating the wheat is easier if its cracked. Works for now until I'm done with this bag I suppose.

Tangential to cultivation, but just curious if anyone has an opinion. I impulse bought 50 lbs of corn and 50 lbs of oats at a big box farm store over a year ago. The corn was only $5 so I got it with some half baked idea to use it maybe for spawn or compost or something. Don’t worry, I haven’t actually used it for spawn. The oats have worked okay for me but I don’t grow nearly enough to finish that bag anytime soon.

I’ll be moving houses soon and want to get rid of both bags. I live near a large park with woods in a large urban area - can I dump this stuff in the woods and let the wildlife eat it? I know people do that, but I’m not sure if it’s bad for the ecosystem. Granted, we’re talking about a highly populated and dirty park right by highways and an airport - not exactly pristine wilderness. I just don’t want animals to get sick.

I can also try to see if any neighbors want it but that’s more work than dumping lol. And if I trash them they’ll get incinerated which seems like a waste.

Is this worth trying to transfer , I ask because its the only one that seems to be doing anything good and the fruit was exceptionally cool in my opinion.

Deer and birds love corn. Someone might be upset if they see you dumping it there though lol

I finally got 3 plates poured but they're thick, I used too much agar by accident. I think I did 5g of agar into 120 mL oat water. 3 plates used like 25 mL each into PF jars.

I struggled trying to pour and ended up using a ladel. It cooled really quick but I like the way this agar feels clean.

I'm getting rust on my pot from my lids and I can't find anything at the store to lift my jars. 1 jar also cracked slightly, my electric burner cycles on and off I think I need to use 2 sets of lids to raise from heat source but I don't want to rust out 8 lids now. I guess I can try building something from a home store? Metal nuts and a metal plate with holes?

Going to inoculate 3 plates. The spores don't need hydrating before I set them down? I get growth in jars in 3 days but I was searching threads and some people are saying it takes their spores weeks?

Should I be maybe using a cap full of bottled water to hydrate some spores in?

I have a fresh print of a couple weeks old I'll use just to hopefully move things along since this my first agar attempt.

Not sure if I should use the biggest print or shoot for a more medium sized one? I know big prints don't guarantee anything but maybe they'll have a harder water requirement for a noob. Maybe medium sized to small may be easier? Just not sure if scraping a dry print onto agar is good or not. I'm hoping to get pics up in 3 days of how this looks on agar.

edit: I'll hold off on innoculating for now and check back later, I don't want to rush into anything and mess this up. I'm trying to play nice and take the proper steps thanks everyone for the help.

You said you used a ladle with your agar. Was that before or after sterilization? If it was after sterilization, then your Agar is contaminated and it doesn't matter what you do. If you did it before sterilization, then it's fine.

As for innoculating, I prefer to use cotton swabs that I have ran through a pressure cooker. I wrap them individually in tinfoil. Just wipe it across the print and then across the agar.

I have tried to scrape directly onto agar but haven't had a good success rate with it.

All of this has to be done inside a SAB or infront of a LFH or FFU, otherwise you're just wasting your time and supplies.

I just had my first go at no prep no boil oats a couple nights ago..

I did 100 G of oats in a quart jar with 100 G of water..

Unfortunately they did not come out like I hoped. Seems to be way too wet and some of the burstage ended up being a real goopy mess. Definitely not going to use them.

Lol not sure where I should go from here.

I'll probably hard boil four to eight more quarts of wheat like I normally do and then once I I have enough for my next few projects.

ill give the no prep no boil trial and error another shot.

I wonder where i went wrong??

I tossed this question out earlier today in the middle of a conversation (sorry i didn't realize the chat was moving so fast)

I have a few mushies that are starting to look deflated or flat? maybe 2 or 3 right now. are they starving for water or something? the others look fine. (i feel like i'm putting a decent amount of water i'm both bottom watering and misting to keep the top sparkly
