Is this the same stuff you cased the pelliculosa with?

At this point I'm almost wondering if there's something that's released during fermentation that acts as a fruiting cue or a certain "ingredient" the mushrooms need to reproduce. Maybe even specific to beech? I'm not sure but I'll do some digging and come back with anything I find.

Actually come to think of it, it's literally the exact same thing. Wouldnt really call it a casing tho considering it is nutritious. I just call it a top layer 😂

See I was in the same boat thinking that the chips had to be fermented rather than pasteurized or sterilized but there are others who have had success with woodlover indoors on sterilized chips but that was section cyanescens...

I wanted to share my latest spawn run. Basically used PF recipe and subbed brown rice flour for rye flour I made by milling whole rye berries. Filled the jars half way and inoculated with LC. Shook the hell out of them and they were basically done in under 2 weeks. Much better than waiting for grain spawn to creep its way to 100%.

As for the substrate here, I've got a mix of rotten beech that been fermented for a few weeks, combined with a roughly equal portion of chopped straw, hydrated and pasteurized overnight (accidentally lol didn't mean to leave the cooker on all night). I tried pluteus on a straw based bulk and it really seemed to like it. It colonized nice and thick but sadly lost the tub to contamination before it reached full colonization and fruiting. These mushrooms exhibit a similar ecological niche in the wild. Both being secondary decomposers that can be found on very rotten wood. I'm theorizing that the rotten wood has a relatively higher amount of cellulose in it after the aggressive white rot fungi eat a good deal of the lignin. This leaves behind a lot of exposed cellulose that is now more easily digested by our secondary decomposing friends.

That’s got me thinking..I’ve been playing around with yucca flower stalk wood as an amendment in my Zapotecorum sub…didn’t really do a deep dive, just went with it because it was woody, local, and free.
They colonized just fine but, Seems that Zaps like lignin, and yucca wood is non lignified (clone tests will determine down the line if it made a difference )

Point is yucca wood has no lignin but high cellulose. Curious how Cerulipes would respond.

If someone had a spare wedge or prints I’d love to test it out.

Oh boy here I go abandoning this thread again lol. I have still been cracking away with these guys but shooting myself in the foot the whole time with shitty cultures. I have stepped up the culturing game quite a bit in the past few months and just used my first proper jars of caerulipes spawn.

this recipe colonized vigorously for both caerulipes and a local active pluteus:

Rye flour:Vermiculite:rotten beech:water 1:2:0.5:1(ish)

Rye flour is whole rye grains milled at home
Verm is the fine grade with relatively small particle size.
Rotten beech was harvested from a fallen beech log in the local woods that was well decayed. I have been fermenting it for a while too now.

Phenodreamers put me back onto the PF tek approach with grain flour and verm as spawn and it is extremely useful for any of the exotics that do not colonize large cereal grains very well. I am testing all of the other stuff I grow on this using millet that I have an stupid amount of. Vermiculite is really cheap and I like to be able to prep spawn in less time than it takes to bake a cake, all without spilling that god damn millet all over the floor.

They are popping up all over the surface mostly on the wood chunks. I might case half of it and see what does better.

I am gearing up to do a new project with this mushroom soon. Just waiting for a clean enough culture. The mycelium grows pretty slow on agar.

I have been spending alot of time looking for it this year. I think this weekend is prime. Rained the past couple days pretty heavy and cooled off to low 50s at night. If you see me crawling around under the beech trees, just know I am doing the lords work

I haven’t heard much about them this year. Maybe a bad year for them or just nobody out looking? I have yet to ever find them. I’ll keep looking though. Anyway, keep up the good work. I am interested in your progress.
