Didn't get much(actually non lol) pheno hunting done this season, but last year this was the pheno I liked best.

Does anyone use calcium carbonate(limestone)for their peat casing?
Since i already have it at home i want to use it insted of hydroxide, which is harder to find in small quantity.
I found some info to use 10-20% by volume, so was thinking 1 part calcium to 7 part peat.
Do i need to let it sit for some days before using it since its slow acting?

Third flush of my cross ziplock


Made a ziplock water tub for some 4oz jelly jar subs (1/4 cup spawn to 1/3 cup sub—used a corner of a sandwich bag for a liner) to test some plates I wasn’t sure about.  These are about 4-5 days faster than their full tray counterparts.  Good way to save on some resources/space, get some quick clone material. 



There’s about a 1/2” of water in the tray.  You can also add .5ml of bleach to the water to help keep it from going stagnant or change it often.  I’ve been adding 5ml of bleach to my jcm water once a week and it really helps stretch the water so you don’t have to change it as often.  Keeps biofilm from forming on the airstone, rack legs, and heater.  Doesn’t seem to affect the trays in any way either.

Genuine question... Why are people saying to pasteurize Pan substrate instead of sterilizing? For decades the standard was sterilize, and people were gets good results. Is the reason that people have now switched to pasteurizing is that it's easier/safer, or are the yields/potency better?

Is that it? I personally never do more than 2 flushes of any species, to keep a more scheduled rotation. I'm working on fruiting pans for the first time though.

IME Pans do generally appreciate a manure sub bulk sub vs just coir (though I have fruited them from just coir) and manure needs to be pasteurized carefully. Unless you are colonizing the bulk invitro in sterile conditions pasteurizing is a must. This was at least the correct info of the day back when I last grew pans, but that was a while ago.

The substrate I used for my first trays is a coir/verm/composted manure mix. I sterilized, then spawned the trays under my flowhood. 5 out of 6 trays colonized fine, but I had 1 tray grow a spot of trich. I suspect it was me not getting that 1 tray clean enough, because the other 5 and the quart jar I kept as a control never contamed.

Is there any reason why I should pasteurize the next batch over sterilizing, or can I keep sterilizing as long as I don't get contams? If I need to pasteurize, then I'd prefer buying a sous vide heater. But if I don't need to, then I can save the money. I can pasteurize my casing jars fine in my crock pot, but it's not big enough to do substrate jars. I'm probably going to use Black Kow in my next batch instead of the composted manure, just in case that a reason why I'm having such a hard time getting the 5 trays to pin.

I always figured sterilization was best left for an aio approach....which for someone without a hood, seemed an intimidating process....

keeping with pasteurization worked for me regardless of yield and esthetics but I never thought it was helping me achieve more....aside from not pasteurizing a nutrient rich sub, its definitely better than that :tongue2:

That was my initial assumption, that it was a safer option for people who didn't have a flowhood.

for myself, definitely....but ive watched other members do it on a smaller scale now that would make a costly mistake feel less damaging....and more approachable.

..reality also is It gets so easy to get stuck in one way that i haven't tried much new in some avenues of cult.  to be honest, ive been pretty content just fruiting these as simple as I can, they still out grow my needs.

Yeah, that's why I like to toss things up every once and a while so I keep trying new ways. What is an "aio approach" btw? I'm an old man and am not up to date on the current abbreviation lingo...

All In One bags, I've made a few homemade ones, I dunno, maybe I didn't give it enough of an effort, or it's just not my style, but minimal success for me and minimal effort too.

Does this work well? It seems this would be perfect for my needs. Grain jars colonize too quickly for me to do my normal G2G rotation cycle, while my agar plates take a bit longer to colonize. I'm concerned about recovery after busting up the colonized substrate. The strain I have does not look well after I bust the grain jars up.
