Huh...never considered coir instead of vermiculite.  Come to think of it, that's kinda brilliant.  Wonder how it'd do w/ an alternate grain like buckwheat that holds more moisture than brown rice flour.  Hmmmmmmmmm...maybe the nameko might like it!

Odd.  I'unno, but I've had better luck w/ everything BUT brown rice flour.  Maybe I just sucked when I used it, lol.  Then again, what's life w/o a little experimentation?

It's simply another technique, not a medication—it doesn't expire. Nor is it a matter of 'fashion'. And even less a matter of technical classism.

It has its context, like any other technique, and I don't think we should take things out of context either.

And I don't want to get into the absurd debate over pros and cons, because that's just what it is—absurd.

Yeah, my understanding is that, while a grain like brown rice would be a total pain in the ass to work with whole, it produces a flour which is much denser and more nutrient-rich.

I think it'd be closer to saying something like "making moonshine in a backwoods still is outdated."

Technically true from one point of view. Nobody's souping up muscle cars to outrun the revenuers and pay off their mortgage anymore. Nobody's marching off to fight President Washington over his infernal Whiskey Tax. And if someone wants to make illegal untaxed liquor, they can just discretely build a modern still in their garage if they have the means to do so. No need to use an old hot water heater and build a fire under it. You could probably just order a vessel, all the steam fittings, and a propane ring on alibaba without raising any red flags.

On the other hand, there are cases where a backwoods still might be the best option. And moonshine retains a near-legendary cachet in the US.

As I pointed out, the original PF tek wasn't just about the technique- it was about having a syringe and instruction booklet delivered to your door. As a technique, it retains its usefulness. But that original context no longer applies in the current world- where, at least in a lot of places, weed is legal, people order hard drugs off the darkweb and nobody cares about psilocybes.

Did any of you ever heard about popcorn Stuton?
He was an old-fashioned Appalachian moonshiner.
He was due to Report to prison and killed himself.
Then after his funeral his alcohol and his methods were made into a brand that is still sold today under the authority of his widow.
Supposedly they used all the same equipment that he had built and designed himself and his original proprietary recipe.

Which effectively made it the first moonshine ever commercially sold in the country.
RIP popcorn.

Why is brown rice such a pain? Just asking because it’s basically all I use aside from some corn occasionally and I feel like it’s super quick and easy in my opinion so I was just wondering what your reasoning was

There was, and maybe still is, a show on Discovery Channel about moonshiners. Back when I watched it, they followed one guy in his quest to set up a legal distillery, and what a pain it was. At that time a gallon of regular illegal moonshine was going for $100 a gallon. Sometime someone would get some fruit and they would make a peach or apple cinnamon batch and that would go for $150 a gallon. I have never been a big liquor guy, so how do those prices compare to buying whiskey in the stores? It seemed to me that the risk wasn't worth the reward for the moonshiners.

It's just my understanding based on what I've heard, and also my experience with making brown rice to eat. Rice in general just seems too sticky to me, but I guess brown rice would be better in that regard.  My own experience is pretty much limited to rye, the one time I tried to change lanes I bought the wrong kind of millet and ended up making porridge in my jars.

If you're using it and happy with the process and results, then I guess you'd have to try some other grains to see whether it's all the same to you, you just have brown rice dialed in, and/or you're just used to the hassle of working with it.

But yeah, to be real, I was pretty much talking out my ass there.

A gallon would be equivalent to, well, about five "fifths" of liquor.

The last couple times I bought liquor, it was a bottle of Paddy's Irish Whiskey that was on sale for about $20. But my local liquor store seems to have it "on sale" a good chunk of the time.

Prices obviously vary quite widely, but yeah, $20-$25 for a fifth of something that's neither cheap rotgut nor super duper rare is pretty standard around where I live. I feel like most Irish whiskeys are pretty similar, but right next to the Paddy's there will be Tullamore DEW for a few bucks more, and then Bushmill's for a few bucks more than that. Both just bigger and more heavily marketed brands.

Bourbon would probably be the more culturally appropriate thing to compare moonshine to. Even though they're totally different products, bourbon would probably be the most popular liquor in Appalachia, and also what legitimate distilleries in and around the region would be producing. $20-$30 a bottle would get you some pretty jice bourbon. Again, nothing too fancy, but some decent enough options in that price range.

For a product like moonshine, I doubt theu could really go much higher than $150/gallon ($30 a fifth), just because of the customer base. Unless they can figire out how to get it into speakeasies in Brooklyn and Portland, then all bets are off lol. But on the other hand, it's worth bearing in mind that the producer is pocketing most or all of that money, whereas a lot of the price tag of a bottle in the store consists of various taxes, shipping fees, and the store's margin.

Yeah, I agree, the risk probably doesn't match the reward. But I think both the risk and the reward have gone down considerably. During prohibition was obviously a whole other story, but I think there was also a long period before and after prohibition when there was a robust trade in untaxed liquor. But it's a tradition that people want to carry on for any number of reasons.

Then again, when you're old, poor, and living in the middle of nowhere, or just young, bored, and living in the middle of nowhere, sometimes the extra income plus the thrill make it all worthwhile.

My understanding of grain in general is that "whole grain" refers to the chaff being intact and therefore a whole lot more nutritious and thus, lower shelf-life for the producers.  This is why brown rice is considered a lot healthier. 

The advent of white flour in general was one of these scientific breakthroughs of the 50's.  They tried to chemistry their way out of everything.  Hence "wonder-bread"

So much so, that "fortification" became an FDA mandate.  Now we're finding out 80 years later that nutrition doesnt really work like that.  You cant just add in a cello, a trumpet, and a clarinet and have an orchestra.

This wasnt something that was done for your health.  It was done because general mills and the guys producing all the cereal grain the us were sitting on the board of directors of the FDA, and they were seeing dollar signs .  Period

Folic acid was actually banned in some countries because they found out it causes prostate cancer and probably other heart disseases.  Woops.  But hey, thats a win win for the US since one of our largest national products is the cancer industry. 

Anyway.  I do digress, but have you ever seen how long it takes a loaf of wonderbread to mold?  Fucking MONTHs if not years.  I keep a loaf in my truck for soldering copper.  (Look it up) and that shit is still as fresh as the day i bought it at 711 like back in april.  Why? Because even bacteria and mold want nothing to do with it because its devoid of nutrition.

Anyway.  Who fuckin knows if mushrooms prefer whole grains but id say its a safe bet...

They’re 2:1:1 verm, BRF and water. When the cakes start to knot/pin in the jars I birth, soak overnight and pack 1/2 an inch of fc coir around them using yogurt containers as mold.
Sandcastles except with coir. Think Hostess cup cakes.

Not trying to argue with you beef, but I saw a video about wonderbread that said it's shelf life had to do with making the moisture chemically unavailable to molds.

I feel like a lot of things would work as a substrate so long as it's clean and has the right texture and moisture retention properties.  Shit, you could prolly smash some sweetgum balls w/ a hammer, soak em, and PC em to sterility and use that as substrate.

Barring some precious little darlings, fungi barely seem to give a fuck so long as they got nutes and a clean place to live and occasionally screw.

...Kinda like humans, come to think of it, lol.
