all enmeshed mold maybe? it's like it's in balance so the mold doesn't break out all over and take over? I dunno  I have um more than a couple plates like this

edit crosspost from potd, similar plate. is this myc actually going aerial because the plate is filthy?

My guess would be that mold found the underside of the plate since the top was colonized, this is just

but I have a lot of plates like this  I'm pouring clean plates. They sit months clean. How could mold find the bottom...unless...taking transfers, cutting in to the agar? Sometimes I wish I knew what the fuck I was doing lol

If it is mold, which I do not know, it most likely came some time after you did the transfers, maybe even as late as when the mycelium went dormant? Just pulling things out my bumhole here though :muppet:

Look at the hole you cut and look at the radius of the mold. See how it is thicker and more near the transfer site, spreading outwards?
It came from where you cut the agar, so it happened during the transfer, those dried-out pins likely sped up the process, perhaps feeding whatever got in and stayed in and survived with the myc..
that's where my experience on this ends.
It would depend on when you did the transfer. Either way it's trash. No that is not aerial myc from your culture.

Oh snap, is that a cabin plate πŸ‘€ If that's the case then absolutely the mold came from the cabin, good catch fiddle

I have quite a few old plates which have tiny almost primordia, little bumps on the surface, and don't look obviously bad to me (but old) but backlit show dark specks. Is this contam? Or something else?

I don't know what it is, but I don't like it :uhoh:

Wait, are yall referring to the  brused and dead little balls of Hyphae that made an attempt to fulfill their biological destiny? Dont everyones plates eventually pin for a few days before they die in the crib after months of being stored in room temp?

I thought this was something that eventually always happens to everyone (as long as you dont have an extremely thin layer of agar that is half dried) Im actually right now waiting for a bunch of plates to pin, its mostly germination plates from february/march, im not expecting most of them to pin this time cause my agar was pretty thin, also they usually start pinning around 2-4 months in if the're tightly wrapped and have a good nice chunk of 2% MEA in them. Imma fruit all those (and make more) in small water tubs, you can actually trigger every fully colonized plate to pin after even only a month or so as long as you give them a nice coir layer and keep them comfy in high humidity and around 75-80F or 25-28C

This is one of the very first I did some time in 2020 i think, just freshly poured 2% MEA, 2% DFA (just ground some old dog food I had at the time) some cat food, rabbit food, human food like BRF and cant remember what else, 10 or so recipes oh and grain water from
rye seeds altho I cant know the percentage of the GWA for obvious reasons, a handful of rye seeds boiled in 1L.

Just sterile sterile agar plates with a few drops of 2 different LC's I was testing out at the time, they looked clean while colonizing and produced fruits, no green no slime visible during the process.

Didnt even use a coir layer the first time I did this and pinning was "meh" but still very fun to observe inside a tiny "Water Tub" with no water lol only a quick mist with the spray bottle on the walls of these tiny 3L shoeboxes before I put the plates inside, Minimal FAE, just flipped lid sitting fairly square to slow down evap rates as much as possible :tongue2:

Nah man, we're talking about what looks like black mold on the underside of the agar.

Yeah that makes a lot more sense, i was so confused at first check several times couldnt see anything weird on those plates. Anyway just asked around on googles AI and there are quite a number of molds that have very slow germination times on agar from 6 weeks up to 4months and they are described as "grows as mold at room temp but converts itself to a yeast at 37C inside bodies" "causes this type of syndrome" causes that type of cancer" the list was long...

I wouldnt play around with molds that take weeks or months to show their nasty looking face on Agar, AI says those that take long time are often really bad because they are so complex and have evolved to wreac havoc and due to this high complexity they are very sensitive to PH among other things on culture media but they apparently make up for their slow start.

Makes you really wonder how many things were cultivating on our plates and substrates that we didnt even think was there because we threw it awak weeks before it woke up

Yes, my thoughts exactly. Now I have a lot of old plates hanging around, not because I'm a horder, but because I don't want to loose a culture. That said, I never had a plate pin, not even once.

I also never seen anything like this and I have plates that are over a year old. That doesn't mean it is something bad, it just means I know nothing about it and that, in and of itself is alarming to me.

When it comes to growing molds we all practically know nothing

But when it comes to growing shrooms we all know KNOTTING, dont we
:saulgoodman:

Imma try find and post pics of old LC's (a whole buch of them) where myc constructed some dense floaty stuff on the surface of the fully colonized broth's then shot out long sturdy strands and crawled all the way up the glass, all the way to the SFD patches inside the lid where it realized escape was futile and to my surprise produced a good amount of primordia and fully developed pins clearly recognizable, no spores, no caps opening, I think they always be trying to fruit but in most cases it doesnt have the energy and quits during early knotting and thats why old cultures often look bruised, just my theory idk

I probably missed that photo scrolling around too boards too quickly at times, lots of threads to catch up on hehe. It always makes me think what the cultures strategy and thought process is when it decides to produce a single massive fruit compared to a bunch of smaller ones. cant be just random process, id like to be able to interview myc but i dont know of any mic that small :bongload:

Couldnt locate the cool looking pic's that I took at a much later stage but found a few, its from the early stage of those LC's just as they began finishing colonization, one is producing fruits on the surface while still being mostly liquid and the other is one is same date LC from that same batch and you can kind of see what I mean with those those thick ropes that basically all jars eventually started doing, all jars were made from the same Mazatapec clone so it makes sense they'd follow similar strategies in all jars

We need a bat signal, but for Nichrome, it's just a piece of wire from an inoculation loop

When mixing water agar agar should it be totaly disolved, I'm seeing lots of sediment. Formula is 10g/500ml distilled water.
