Afghanistan was not conquered.  It was an unwinnable war because the US-installed government was not capable of standing up on its own to the Taliban insurgents.  The Afghan war was Vietnam 2.

Could have made the arrangements to keep troops there like Germany and Korea forever.  It's a about keeping the idea of stability until 90 years when it could become stable.  It's called being an empire.
