Hey newb here checking in, I’ve missed my last few chances to go hunting with my partner but we’ve scheduled a trip sometime after the 11th.

I’m a little worried about the season giving out before we go, but we’re gonna be trying anyways. No idea yet where to look tho, I’ve still gotta figure out a spot to get research from that doesn’t overwhelm my fragile ass, but if we manage to find something I’m really hoping to post here!

I find it easier formatting posts using a 1:1 aspect ratio as the standard image size. :shrug:

they didn't survive ... this hobby/pastime/career ?  seems to have become increasingly popular, particularly over the last couple of years

My favourite local patches where fenced off by construction a few weeks ago. They were along a walking trail that was "closed" but still perfectly accessible because it's not really part of the actual construction site (at least for now) so it seemed easy enough to get in discretely, especially after they put up those mesh screens on the temp fence.

Went out there at night after work had stopped and came home with a nice 56g harvest, easily some of the largest caps I've seen around here, I guess because it's been better weather + not having to compete with other people for the supply.



I suspect they're either going to remove the garden beds entirely, but hopefully they'll just clean them up and add fresh chips.

Its always been popular, but its super popular now and not just subs but edibles too. There are several groups for picking subs on facebook and a lot of people are on there. People share spots too, theyll tell their mates about a spot, so some spots will get thoroughly picked.

Fuck yeah. Love that people are doing that.
The more the merrier I reckon.
Means more people are taking mushrooms which for most people I think will be beneficial.

It is what it is. If theres too much competition i might stop my sub photography passion, im still getting the goods though :super:. I will say It is annoying to have patches raped (myc exposeed) and all the pins picked though.

People used to complain 20 years ago that too many people knew about this and people will still be complaining about the same thing in 20 years. :tongue2:

The thing is, these mushrooms are only getting more prolific and new species are being discovered. There's more mushrooms out there today then there were 20 years ago. There's been new urban developments and parklands made over the years as Melbourne grows. Providing new urban habitat.

Every year they mulch the gardens, so they provide them food for them to flourish.

So long as our forests exist they will be out in them in force. At certain times of year they're the dominant species.

Heaps to go round for decades to come. Global warming could have it that cubensis one day grows down here.


The shit khants will likely increase but that's just general society these days. Hopefully the mushrooms teach them to be better care takers of the land.

couldn't agree more although everybody on this website appears suitably respectful, appreciative and humble re Mother Nature.

we are relatively spoiled in Victoria - still quite a few sequestered urban spots ... these three were a surprise today - survived a lot of foot traffic for 10 days



the specimen below was found earlier this week in the same location of my first sub find that i was shown way back in the day

revisited for the first time in 39 years - thrilled to find it still providing and pristine

sunday these 3 (along with a couple of dozen) survived a week of heavy pedestrian traffic



tuesday a more remote site only found 2 but better than nowt

Well July is nearly over and here in Gippsland in southern Victoria, it's the worst season I have ever seen. The national park where I typically forage has literally virtually no fungi of any kind to be found during this entire Winter. It seems like the almost relentless sunny days here and elevated temperatures is the reason. I am finding it very disturbing, not just for the fact that there is nothing to be found. Has anyone else noticed less fungi this year ?

It can vary season to season and this is why I prefer to grow my own which guarantees me supply each year.

By growing my own I can also extend the fruiting season for several months and into spring which is a bonus.
