This spot has produced some real beauties over the years. I don't know how everyone else is finding this season, but for me it's been quite lacklustre. We just haven't had enough cold days.

season seems a bit weirder than usual although it's always surprising one way or t'other

last night 15 minutes dog walk in dark expecting nothing and stumbled across a chunky cluster

today 4 hours drive and 4 hours walking for a literal couple

walk was peaceful and therapeutic so it's all good

Found two lots

Someone said on the radio that you can graph the root system of a tree by seeing where the mushrooms grow near a tree (so seeing a ring of mushrooms indicated the root below it). They were talking about dead root systems
Is that true for subs? Gums aren't dead tho.

I think it is relevant to mycorrhizal species, where the mushroom grows ONLY on the roots of trees. Subs are not mycorrhizal.

Some of the edibles like porcini and truffles are mycorrhizal.

Take what you hear and read in the media here about fungi with a grain of salt. The recent reports from police in Western Australia about death caps being found on a forager is total bullshit. Death caps do not occur in Western Australia and no other Amanita species there contains Amatoxins.

But...The person talking about tracking dead roots by observing the fungi growing is quite true.

As a Horticulturist for 20 years it's something I've also learned to do. Often you have trees next door removed but there's now a line of Coprinellus micaceus growing across the lawn of your property. This is probably because the roots from the tree next door have run under this lawn for years. Now that the roots are dead, the mushrooms have taken hold of the dead wood and colonised it. The flush of mushroom on the lawn are from the now dead roots below.

To fix this problem(some people view mushrooms as problems) you need to remove the dead roots below the lawn. Otherwise they will just return.

Mycorrhizal mushrooms are different to decomposers.

Awesome. Yeah I see coprinellus micaceous all the time I didn't realise they were mycorrhizal. They are not one of the most pretty mushrooms haha given how they kinda melt (not literally but they look like it) once they start to rot lol

Coprinellus micaceus are Saprophytic(decomposers) not Mycorrhizal. To clarify.

I was trying to say that Mycorrhizal fungi are different to decomposers.
