So did you end up heading down? How was it?

I didn’t pick any as I already have enough and now I have two patches that are amazing. Might sound strange but they really are a beautiful mushroom when they start to all come up together.

I went down (for probably last trip this season) today, still really good conditions but I noticed not as many around or is it just me? Less of other species too not just subs. Also saw a few others picking. The beautiful silence and calm is absolute heaven and escape from the noise of city life, I really feel better after a long few hours walking and picking in the forest.

Thats crazy imo, I dont have enough money to go down just for a look unfortunately, maybe I should grow a patch and just go for looks, but i love the thrill of the hunt! And to the other people saying they grow in Kwinana or wherever away from the triangle, I am yet to be convinced, has there been any finds from these areas this season?

Anyway, I'm about to go have some and have a few beers and vibe out to some good music, but, this might be my last one for the season, if I can get another one in i'll post about it, but cheers and happy tripping.

Hi legends,

First time poster here. I’m down in the triangle at the moment on my first ever attempt at foraging for subs. No luck yet! But that’s okay. I’m here to learn and get familiar and apprentice myself to the mycelium.

Doing it on my own coz I’m new to WA and don’t really know anyone in the know. Muggles raise their eyebrows at me, but to me it’s spiritual, not merely recreational.

Anyway, I’ve taken in a lot of information online, read Paul Stamets’ guide, learnt from these forums (thank u all!); now I’m here to learn from the land.

Visited four “dots” shown on Atlas of Living Australia (fed by iNaturalist data, I believe) around B town, representing recent sub sightings (on J road, the GV Tree Park, and Mullalyup). Spent ages in J road pine areas, but nope. Feel like I may have left it way too late in the season? Or maybe I’m just not seasoned enough.

Seems to be more Gymnopilus around than anything else, as far as LBMs (Little Brown Mushrooms) are concerned. Saw some doozy Amanitas though. And emus, roos galore, and a crazy-cute Red-Breasted Robin. So even if I don’t find any subs, there’s plenty else that’s spiritually uplifting out here.

Just sharing all this (everything and nothing at the same time) to introduce myself to this community, say g’day, and also maybe request any tips or advice as to how to be a better forager and apprentice in this caper. Thanks in advance for anything you might be able to offer!! Even if for just for future seasons. Looking to make an annual ritual of it.

Sidenote: Found some Slippery Jacks yesterday on my way down from Perth and chucked ‘em in my soup for dindins

Yes abit late in the season, there are still options if you wait after the next rains about 1 week or so, should see a few come up. As for the right location, they are abit difficult unless ive got something wrong, they aren't in ANY pine forest in Balingup, seem to be in one forest, so find it and you will be good, Nannup apparently has some good forests too.. Msg me for more details, but goodluck

Hey tok1n!

Thanks for your message

It rained heavily here on Monday as well as the middle of last week, I believe, so I was hoping for one last flush…

Oh that’s so generous and kind of you to offer more details. I’m in the Nannup area at the moment, so will message you as suggested. Thank you!

Wasn’t sure about the etiquette, and I have so many questions, haha. But it seems I’m in the right place

For starters, if I do find suspected subs, what would be the best forum to request help with ID-ing? (still learning my way around this site)

And have cops been an issue for anyone in recent seasons?

And thinking ahead a little bit, what would you say is the best method to start a new patch? Would you do it by spores, inoculated woodchips, digging up mycelium-rich soil and plonking it somewhere new, or some other means?

If you have mushrooms that need identification then make a new post in this forum. Click "Post" at top right of the MH&I main forum.

One of the best ways is to find the type of habitat they like to grow in. Once you know that you begin to find them everywhere. On identifying them… again, once you find one you easily can identify them again. Post up on here to get them identified but also look at  plenty of photos and spore print etc. Good luck, the journey and hunt is fun.

Might have to wait for next year though... all the action has died down.

Okay not as far north as Kwinana haha. But still well outside of the triangle. Maybe 50km north as the crow flies.

I've since been determined to find other patches outside the triangle - I thought, if I can find them in my own backyard, then I can find them elsewhere - but I always come back empty-handed...

What interests me most are the the patches that form naturally in native bushland, because that is very strong evidence to me that subs are native to WA (contrary to what everyone believes).

Spores can easily hitchhike on wind, water run off etc. to form colonies wherever they land

For sure. That's how new patches are formed. But don't you think the fact that they can naturally form in native bushland is decent evidence that they are native to WA?

Yes. apparently they are native to Australia, and there is scientific research that supports it (Dr Alistair McTaggart's research).
The triangle in my view isn't hard boundaries but the rough area where they occur naturally give or take ~50km as you say, but I'm fairly convinced they don't grow in Perth anywhere naturally, although you can cultivate them. Spores *may* make it to Perth from the triangle but IMO have a very low chance of sustaining themselves (without a wise and compassionate gardener) because of Perth's aridity specifically in summer.

Also, Warrk...
Are you going to tell us how many grams was in the bowl? I want to see how far off I was :toohightothink:

yes, I was way off... i picked ~100 recently and dried them and got ~26g, that last rain produced pretty well so the season isn't over until the rain stops. So far August has been a good amount of rainfall but September will definitely start to taper off. Also trying to get abit of myc in the pine area nearby, so I've got a few stems on cardboard at the moment, hopefully can get a local patch going...

Also...did you go to the triangle for that bunch or is that your local produce?

And heres a few of my fave snaps since i've been getting into photographing this iconic little guys...

Cheers

They are my local produce and I am not in WA so can't access the triangle, I am in Vic. Our season is pretty much over.

That's a good amount, how much do you tend to take for a trip? Are you affected by tolerance? I think my tolerance increased maybe... Also, I'm not certain on the exact measurements because I didn't completely dry that last batch that I thought was 26g, so it would've been maybe 15g cracker dry, because it was damp and the mushroom is mostly water... I don't know how many g's i take per trip but its roughly 15-20 mushrooms of (give or take) medium size. This has been my yard stick for a good trip for a while now. If I double it I get an absolutely appalling trip, and triple is when im traveling through the multiverse from my bed lol. Anyway, it would be good to understand what others doses are, and what their experiences are like. And yes the season is over now, its been a fun one, and that was a fun discussion about the Bradshaw's we had! Cheers
