South Australia 2005 season starter
    #4238309 - 05/30/05 10:13 PM (19 years, 8 months ago)

hey everyone. i went hunting today in the Adelaide hills and found a small colony of Psilocybe subaeruginosa. The weather still is shitty tho out my 6 locations only 2 have fruited. This is my first non solitary find this season, so i guess the SA season has officially begun. The first find was on pine needles which seems to fruit a little bit earlier then eucalypt subs. This colony was growing on woodchips between eucalypt trees. So don't fret South Aussies they are out there in very very wet locations only. If any other SAers find any feel free to post your finds here.

heres a trippy kangaroo (or wallaby??) i ran into while hunting with her joey. I was able to get within couple metres of them

OR he could just post it in both. I'd like to have an SA only thread, that way I don't need to look at all the finds from the lucky bastards in melb and nsw etc. - only the local fellas.

It's rained a bit today, im going for another hunt asap!

the_notorious - the reason i posted a seperate thread is because I didnt just have pictures of magic mushrooms to post. This thread is for anything South Australian and if you arent a local then get the hell out!! (unless you have some positive input of course)

I think Australian and NZ finds are very different. In Australia we are spread over such a large area our shroom seasons vary heaps due to local conditions. Post where and when you like.

But i think a Australian only thread would have been more sensible.

thanks magicrooms. dont forget New Zealand have a 4 or 5 page thread on there season only so I think we are entitled to as well. Besides last year the SA thread attracted a lot of new SA shroomers and a few of them went out and found subs for the first time (which is what is all about). Up until then I havent really seen anyone from SA post before. btw I heard you have taken a picture of Psilocybe tasmaniana if you still got it can you post it please?

went out to the pine forest and surprisingly found a decent amount. last week is was dry... nothing just a small cluster. then all of a sudden about 4 or 5 clusters come up. so i went a bit nuts with the camera, ive reached the upload limit for today. so anyway i got enough to get by from the huge draught for now heres the pics. ooisi also has some pics he will upload when he fixes his computer. edit - more pics added

dr concrete - the best information i can give you is research, a lot, know what your looking for. look at as many pics as possible and spend heaps of time in the field of course. Try blue meanie's site and erowid mushroom gallery

went to the the eucalypt patch yesterday with el duderino. a lot of them were dried up/dying because of lack of rain.

Yeah it works, but it takes a year for the mycelium to fruit...so if you grabbed a few colonised woodchips / bits of wood from the place you found them (of course be careful to not damage the patch as much as possible) then chuck that in with some uncolonised woodchip at a new location, it will colonise and probably fruit the next season.

yeah im trying this now - last year I dumped some pine chips at a sub producing spot and introduced some wild mycelium. This year it looks like its colonising I hope it fruits. here is the harvest from June 4

hopefully will get a similair if not better harvest this week.

Shit yeah, how good is this weather we're having?? I reckon if I went out today, I might find a few small shrooms, but it seems like next week or weekend there would be heaps of decent sized ones yeah just due to all the rain that is forecast.. have you ever thought that people who read this forum could be going to the same spots as you without even knowing? I reckon that'd be pretty weird, but kinda funny, except for when one of you misses out coz the other picked them all. I dont know, I was just thinkin that today, coz one day a couple of weeks ago, I went looking at a spot that I know of and we were kinda near a house, a fair way i guess, we could tell coz there was lights on (this was at night obviously) and while we were harmlessly searching around, I kept looking at the house and there was this one light that kept being in a different spot whenever I looked there, and I just put that down to me not being able to tell where i was around the house but anyways, we went back to the car and my friends noticed the light swaying from side to side and we realised it must be someone coming towards us with a torch so we left.. maybe that was one of you, and if it was, too bad, you should share. anyways, im new to this forum, so yeah, HEY!

Hey fellow south aussies, I went out today to Mt. Lofty. My first real hunt, I found about 50 shrooms but none active I don't think (pics coming soon). Wasn't much eucalyptus bark etc on the ground, mainly leaf litter and pine needles.
Shitloads of rain atm tho  can't wait for tomorrow.
Where do all you other SA,ers go hunting (what type of forest etc)?

LOL! nah man wasnt us we don't hunt at night at we don't hunt near any house. Also we dont give out specific locations (the Mount Lofty Ranges are a very big place) although we were aware when we first found them that other people shroom there. obviously because other shroomers told us our best locations.

look at out thread and what they grow on. They grow in soil amongst rank grass in pine and eucalypt forests in places that retain a lot of moisture. Also woodchips and several other substrates

Thanks for the info, but I was wondering one thing, what height do you find the subs like most (bottom/top of hills etc), or is it just anywhere that retains moisture good?

valleys with creeks running through them work well. and yes the place does have to retain a lot of moisture.

heres our latest hunting efforts. we thought we weren't gonna find anything when we were greeted by P platers wearing wutang clothes. driving past they yelled "too late we cleaned this place out!". which they almost did whilist being very destructive in the process. anyway this is what i found. we were expecting a lot more

Some sort of Gymnopilus (Spectabilis?):

I seem to be able to find them everywhere.

Amanita (Muscaria?):

These were the only two mushroom types that I spotted, nothing that I was looking for though.

Teh split cap on the one you posted earlier is actually much more representative of Ps.eucalypta - If i had the time i would like to study these further - but i dont have much time unfortunately. Ill see what i can do though.

So with todays and yesterdays and the day before's rain, and the sunshine I have in my area at the moment... how long should I be waiting to go hunting?? I mean, I know its supposed to be a couple of sunny days or so, but I've been out looking about 4 or 5 times this season and found nothing, but been looking in what looks to be good spots. I figure since I know that other people know about the spots that I go to, should I just assume they've been taken already or just that they're not growing where I'm looking? One thing I've noticed is that in the pictures that have been posted in this thread, there's grass.. I've been looking in spots with natural mulch ground cover, and some small plants and big trees.. maybe I'm just looking in the wrong spots but my friends have found some on the side of the road near there before.. I don't know. I wish that if I went today or tomorrow that I'd be able to come back with bags full of em, or atleast enough to get me and some friends tripping for a while.

seeya.

Hey has anyone heard of shrooms growing in the Belair National Park? I've had a good look through there over the last couple of days and can't find a thing. They're probably more up into the hills eh?

hey dudes what do you guys feel when you eat mushies
i felt sort of like i was between being druck and wacked, but i did see a red haze at the top or bottom of my vision, but nothing more than that. From what i was told i should have seen commandoes, indians, cowboys and other frecky shit. I ate 4 large shrooms and about 10 smaller shrooms and yes they were the real deal and did stain blue and look exactly like your pics on the net. Do i need to eat even more mushies or am i fucked up.

Well I went on my first 'successful' hunt for subs yesterady, only found 4, and a couple of pins which I left, but thats 4 more than I've ever found . It was clear someone else had been picking, there was all sorts of non-actives thrown around the place.
Found a big Amanita Muscaria (sp?) too.
Also I was wondering if anyone had tried to grow Ps. subs with PF tek, or if it's even possible?

DrConcrete: Hope you had fun

G'day all, first post.
I went out on Sunday and had a look - the first time Ive ever been looking for myself. It was very rewarding! We looked for about an hour and found 13 pretty small ones, I was surprised at the gold tops that they have.. very different to the bruised state I usually see them in. We went climbing in the Hills.... very chilled and relaxing. The best bit was just getting out there and looking!

OOISI meant 1st of July not June. It was pretty good day we got a combined haul of 280 which is the most we ever found in a day. We had to stop hunting because it was raining too much so we werent able to check the whole place. so here are the pics

yesterday's hunt -

in this particular location the preferred substrate is moss or mossy soil , they dont really grow much on anything else

some eucalypt patches from last year are now starting to fruit again in small clusters. pine is much better

some lovely pics^^^^^^
I guess Im just gonna keep lookin... got my digital camera at the ready. I wish it would bloody rain! Everyone has favourite spots I spose but do any of you guys just go looking randomly? The spot I went to looks pretty fished out. When I was there I saw quite a few cars nearby and there were all sorts of non actives lying about the place. Should I pull out a map and look for gullies or is that an exercise in futility?

This was exactly the same as when I went the first time (if by lying you mean pulled out and thrown), try there again very shortly after a rain to try and beat the other hunters.

Although there may not be any there, just a suggestion.

EDIT: I was wondering if any SA hunters hunt for Coplandia Cyanescens (sp?) and if they've had any luck.

I guess these ones were pretty old.

I know my old man has stumbled over something one time that he got from a farmer friend, what it was i'm not sure, but I know they weren't winter mushrooms, maybe fall or spring. Psychoactive or sickeners I dont know either, but hes still living.

I dont think we get copelandias, just rumours as far as i know. but i would love to be proven wrong. trixxy those are subs aka copper tops. i recommend you check each specimen for bluing and purple sporeprint if you are unsure

certainly prety weird looking. The fact that it grows on similar woods might suggest its another sub variant. I guess microscopic examination might be the way to know for sure.

Those definitley look kind of funky...they bear a slight resemblance to the likes of Cortinarius rotundisporus, with the chunky stems and crowded gills, though those are clearly a psilocybe species.

Like bluemeanie said, you might want to get them under a microscope to see for sure whats going on. Could be interesting!! Nice work.

When OOISI first came across those they did strike us as different, even though they were growing inbetween subs. the caps had an unusual amount of green staining and the stems are at least twice as thick as what we see here. overall they seem more stubby then regular subs.

yt - the end of the season varies it depends on the weather. so when it starts to warm up the subs will slowly dry out. I presume it will end probably sometime during august. that sub cluster that was fruiting from dung was probably western grey kangaroo but it could be from other types of marsupials im not really sure.

hey y.t. yeah we havent had much rain at all. things were mostly dried up today. If the weather keeps up this way season will end some time in August same as last year. Let us know how you go at the peninsula.

Todays hunt - mostly saw mushrooms like this, caps faded, most had dried up, a lot had bug infestations.

Seeing fresh mushrooms was a rare site, this particular cluster was the freshest specimens i saw today

and the rest

hey guys i have been looking for shrooms for a while
do you guys eat them all the time. Cause I didn't like them all
that much and got sick of them after about 2 months of weekend trippin. I didn't see things, but i was off my head. Do you guys ever get sick of eating mushies regularly?

Take only what you need, not what you can dude

btw nice finds guys, 280 in one hunt is awesome!

OOISI the subs in your pics at the top of page 10 have quite brown caps compared with the subs I usually find which have much yellowier caps. Could just be the lighting though.

Stay classy Adelaide

Ah Good to see a Familiar Face Narayan
Narayan and i checked Out the fleurieu Peninsula today amongst the pine mostly was a cold windy and wet day  lol Found a few pins and older subs in one location amongst the pine althought this is a well known place and obviously there were signs of recent pickers being there, But still alot of mushroom activity - non actives which is always a good sign. The older subs were quite old and dry... Also the pines did seem to b getting a tad dry aswell, We didnt go very deep at all but upon further investigate and god forbid more rain and another few cold snaps, that particular area could yeild quite a few good finds i imagine depending on how much time and how far u wanna walk  :tongue2: Did see 2 small aminatas in the pine and also 2 Purple Amanitas??? wat r they??
Was a awesome day, could get lost down there exploring the pine lol, not many subs thought. Anyway was watching the news and looks like more rain is on the way and looking cold this week 2 !!! :mushroom2:

Yeah I have noticed how similar Azurescens and the Subs are very similar in appearance. If they grew right next to eachother, someone might not know the difference. How are those subs in the way of potency? Ive never had them...

Narayan, it depends on the patch and what conditions there exposed too, usually if theres sun, but not too much they tend to go yellow. Ive seen and photographed subs with yellow, brown, orange and red caps.

young_tripper id say june or july would be the coldest month (cant decide which one) august is usually when it starts to warm up, although last year i found subs throughout all of august to early sept.

BigBallzMan, subs are of similair potency to azures, i havent had azures but people who have had both say theyre similar. So yeah, pretty damn potent

I found these today, I'm wondering if there could be 2 different slightly different species here?

Im sure the bottom row are subaerigunosa, but some of the top row seem to have more bell shaped tops, without a nipple like the subs, and they are a lighter shade as well. Just normal variation????

yeah opium... tis the season pretty soon. I found some growing wild in the hills once, and quite a few peeps grow it in their back yard.
On another note recently I was walking in the hills and thought id check a few shroom spots. I found some dried up manky looking specimens and threw them down the hatch - bugger me! the strongest Id had all season! Shrooms never cease to amaze me in the way they are found and their ability to surprise you.
