Melbourne Australia 2007 season
    #6561941 - 02/13/07 08:36 AM (14 years, 11 months ago)

I know it isn't season yet, but i was wondering how you more experienced hunters think the drought will affect our mushroom season this year. i know it is a while away but i really hope it pisses down rain before then. has anybody else been thinking about this??

Hi there! I'm in regional Victoria (at the moment), and I'm dead set on finding some mushrooms this year, wherever I have to go. Unfortunately I don't know how bad the drought is, but I do know that where I am it has been raining quite a lot lately.

May I ask when you're planning on going hunting? And where you'll most likely be looking (grazing fields, woods, parks, etc.)? And are there particular suburbs/regions that you know of that typically have better mushroom growth? I haven't been out hunting in Melbourne/VIC before and a few pointers for myself and my mates would be invaluable.

First of all, WAY TO EARLY. I wouldn't even bother looking until early May, provided it rains. The temperatures are still way to high, i mean 38-40 degree days are ridiculous in terms of mushroom growth (thats celsius btw)

As for hunting, you would want to be looking in parks/reserves/gardens/forests where there is woodchipped/mulched man made gardens and possibly pine forests where the forest floor is primarily pine needles.

Also, tools_n_corpses, im not going to give you a specific suburb but if you actually research enough about them and are able to accurately ID them you will realise, in the right conditions, that they grow EVERYWHERE. Seriously, once i knew what i was looking for, i found them in 95% of the places i looked. Hell, they even grew in my front yard

The_notorious, who said anything about going hunting in this heat. Of course it is way to early.

Well you dont usually make a Melbourne thread until the season has started. If you wanted to know about the season/conditions/location then maybe search one of the 15 billion posts that have been made on the same topic.

well sorry fellow tripper but i did do a search and i also searched google but nothing came up. i thought this would be a good place to ask but obviously it offends people like you to be asked about droughts. i am sorry for any grief i may have caused you.

try using the shroomery's search function intense, there are many, many melbourne threads. dont worry in about 2-3 months (depending on conditions) or so your city will be overrun with them. we can't really help you now and talking about the weather is against the rules. btw you should listen to the_notorious he knows what he's talking about. good luck !

Good advice tryptonite.

And intense_cutn, i didn't mean to be arrogant or to have a go at you, i obviously misunderstood what you were saying. I was assuming you thought the season was underway and was asking for advice. My bad on that part.

Anywho, come May-June, depending on the weather, Melbourne will be full of shrooms. Im not talking a patch or 2. Last year i had 10-15 patches each of which were yielding 100's. Shame i dont take them anymore, i just like hunting them

When its closer to the season we can start a finds thread and discuss what to look for. Until then, do more research (you can never do enough!) and make sure you know how to ID them. If you find anything in the interim then post it up and im sure people will help you ID it.

Peace

...Still too early? There's been a shitload of rain lately, and where I am in Gippsland it's very very green. On the way back from the shop today I saw a small pocket of very large white mushrooms on a lawn.

It was looking quite green in Melbourne when I was there last weekend.

tools_n_corpses look at the date these last comments were posted. but in my opinion i think it is still a little early for melbourne.
