I’m not sure what variety they are. Last year’s flowers were like this, but also red and pink and even some white and some “Black Swan.” I mixed my seeds when I planted this year, but everything that grew has looked like these.

So you got some chicks with your Hens & Chicks now? You had some this year from my seeds that don't have the chicks, right?

Mine this year (from last year's seeds) do not have "chicks", just "hens" haha, so far, the dozen or so I've seen go to seed. Maybe it skips a generation.

QUESTION FOR ALL:
So if you want to harvest poppies for "fun" as well as seeds, are the pods still "zesty" when they've gone to seed and turned woody / brown looking? Or do you have to harvest earlier and not get seeds from those pods?

If you allow a pod to grow mature seeds and harvest the seeds then the pod will still contain actives after you harvest those seeds. Even if you allow it to dry. Dry pods still contain actives.

So you don't lose any doing that?

Why would you? And any that would be lost would be minimal at best. Would contain more than any pod that had been lanced then dried and made into tea. There's no real loss unless you're a fiend and one pod so precious haha. :gollum:

Speaking of drying.  The last couple years I have been letting them dry until they rattle when shaken.  The first year I tried to hang dry them and they all molded.  If using a dehydrator you might need to go over 24 hours.  I usually run that in my garage where it's already super hot.  Also they would obviously dry faster if cut in half.

Letting them dry naturally also allows you to collect seeds.  If harvested too soon the seeds will be immature.

i messed around with a hydro setup a while back and it didn't turn out well. still kinda obsessed with the idea. decided to try different hydro setup. no soil medium. coconut coir.

what i could find indicated that 6.5pH is the proper value. first attempt near completion.

lots of rotten ends occurring and dying lower leaves. several buds came up kinda black and would die. look like this

i don't think it's a nutrient issue or pH. i think it's due to over-watering. plus the bag i'm using is plastic and probably keeps the medium wetter longer. once i allowed the medium to become mostly dry between watering the issue seems to have resolved.

the roots appear to be really sensitive to moisture and movement and i think the plant is restricted in size and shape by the size and shape of the roots.
my plant is only about as wide and tall as the bag of medium.

i decided to try an experiment with the size of grow container. i made a 24'' tall and 6'' diameter growbag from landscape fabric. probably make a stand for it so the roots don't get traumatized every time i move the bag.
the pot, being so skinny, will dry out quickly and hopefully avoid any rotting of the roots. the height will hopefully allow for a long taproot and a bigger plant.

Soil structure, spacing and timing seem to be super critical with these guys.  My volunteers are all voluptuous and the ones that I planted have many dieing before maturity as yours were, both getting the same amount of water.

The planted ones are yellow looking compared to the deep blues and greens of the volunteers.  I'd assume that they didn't have enough space as you suggest.  I worked both mounds/rows up good; adding spent coco coir and chicken poo compost.  The planted row had less ammendments and added sand as it seemed compacted.

The volunteers had more time to cabbage as well.  I actually had no idea that they were even there for a long time.  So basically the ones that I put a lot of time and effort into did poorly compared to minimal involvement.

When I was a hella junkie I thought that the VFW was selling actual flowers.  What a disappointment.

Those aren't Opium poppies, they're a different species. They used to use real flowers but they don't last long, so replaced with paper and plastic flowers.

I used to think they were 0pium poppies, and symbolic of injured soldiers getting morphine.

But they're a different, non-active species, Flanders poppies. aka rhoeas poppies. I've grown them before. They can be red, or white, or both. Very pretty.

They're symbolic in UK and USA of how wild poppies grew in fields where solders' blood spilled...and horses, plus men and cannon balls ripped up the fields so new seeds could grow when they land (because no longer covered by existing grasses and weeds)

Based on a true story. Read this totally heart-wrenching poem about it from World War 1:

SO, I HAVE A GROW QUESTION FOR ANYONE:

When flowers have fallen from poppies, and there are no other buds on that plant, when it's all just green seed pods, do you completely stop watering? I read that somewhere, but it sounds extreme.

I do, at that point it's done growing and I want it as dry as possible.  I have read that rains and watering will leech out the actives but have no idea if there's ever been any studies done to prove that.

I've heard the same, but I don't think that's happening with rain or watering leeching/flushing/diluting the alkaloids. The same is kinda said about "flushing" cannabis plants towards the end of flowering but in regard to leeching excess nutes not necessarily the actives, and even that is BS lol, running water through a plants root system is not going to do anything to flush out compounds in the plants tissue/cells.

I also cut back on watering once the petals have dropped and the pods start to swell up...Once the pods are set/pollinated it seems that poppies start to go into senescence rather quickly, likely not drinking up or needing much water.

Cool.

Are you using just the stalks or the foliage too? Have you made a tea or a reduction from the straw before? I know this thread is for the cultivation side of things but I'm curious how the potency of the popppy straw compares to the pods?...Something I've wondered about :strokebeard: .

I'll be having my first cup of tea of this summer next weekend, :awesome::drooling:

I am using the stalks and foliage. I haven't tried this before, but I did read up on it and since the whole plant is active I decided to try it. I have some tea strength ice cubes from before I reduced it. I will report back once I try it.
I basically used the tech for the edible stuff in this post.

Nektar
You'll want at least 2 weeks after the petals drop to start harvesting, they'll double in size and turn a dusty blue color.

I've heard it is but not as much as pods. Pods most, stems next, leaves least, roots don't bother, is what I heard. Also seems to make sense from what happens if there's a break in the plant.

I had an interesting demonstration the other day. During evening at end of a very hot day I was watering, I accidentally cracked one stalk bumping it hard with the plastic nozzle at the end of the hose. Came back 2 days later and it was oozing.

Open this image up big and look closely at the top plant wound of the 3 here:

SO... as to not watering after getting pods, do you still water if, say, you have 5 pods where petals have dropped on a plant, but on the same plant you have one pre-flower bulb?

And if there are no flowers left on a plant and you're not watering to dry the pods, what do you do if that plant starts to wilt in high summer heat before the bulbs are full size?

Another question: I've heard using boiling water for tea harms the alkaloids, but that sounds like bullshit and it was not a reliable source. Any one with experience both ways? I've made tea boiling ground pods in water for 20 minutes and it sure did work, but I've never tried cold water extraction.
