Damn I made some plates with the same genetics as the blue ones I posted but I used purple dye for those. Theres almost zero growth going on. Its like the purple killed the mycelium

I just read an older posts that red#3 kills fungi and purple has it :frown:

Some red dyes have anti funglas but this would only effect spores and most dyes today don't have these properties

I poured purple plates yesterday. Haven’t germinated any yet. But I will say they look like shit. Color is hardly purple after PC. I don’t expect them to cause issues. Might use them just as transfer plates tho

Well I dont see what else it could be the. I recently got a FFU and all my plates are doing great but the purple ones all 10 of them arent growing. All made from transfers of healthy looking clean other plates

Red#3 is indeed in the ingredients after looking

I have also used a lot (like 8 drops in 400ml or something) because I wanted it to look darker

I've seen plenty of pictures of the same culture side by side on a red plate and a non red plate with clear difference is their vigor

Best thing you can do is simply look it when you get your dye , none of the stuff I get is antifungal it's all synthetic or petroleum based ( I'm using typical stuff for dying Easter eggs )
Most dyes for antifungals are used for preservatives yellow being the most common for antifungal, but reds as well but these aren't your common dyes off the shelf it's more like the dyes used for those bright cherries on your martini lol

I didnt know before I bought them. They are a neon food coloring dye set. Its got neon purple, blue, green and red. So I guess blue will do roflmao. I know the blue is fine at least from some plates I made

But the Easter egg stuff I get is fine I can dye my bulk and be fine ( here's red straw )

Ok thx. Is there any actual small advantages to charcoal in agar like anti bacterial properties or anything else?  I just wanna do it for looks but I guess its nice to know. Nothing negative for pan cyan I hope?

FWIW the red dye FD&C Red #3, or erythrosine, is a potent antifungal. It was a common food dye, and was often available to home users as a food colorant. It was banned by the FDA in 2025, so this concern over red dye in our agar plates should be a thing of the past.
