You pushed yourself through education though. Most of my friends who lost their parents at a young age, totally fell out with the system and weren't able to finish much. At least until they were well in their twenties. They all met in a centre that's supposed to prepare adolescents for an independent life / household, but was a de facto users location. There wasn't much on the side education.

Also, no child should ever have to be hungry, we live in a society that's built upon excess. The primary needs of a child always prevail over anyone's property, or profits. Never compare yourself to a commodity. Wish I could have said this to the younger you.

My moment that changed everything was when the court put my three year old brother and me (5) with our abusive, alcoholic father.  My paternal grandmother told the judge he was a drunk and had no business raising kids.

But, the court had been all kids should live with their mothers and wanted to correct that to 'boys' should live with their dad.

So, my brother and I were placed with an abusive drunk who mostly wanted to punish my mom for leaving him.  Because the judge wanted to correct the statistics rather than look at the case in front of them.

Not only did that moment change the course of my childhood, it completely radicalized me in regard to faith and trust in the court and legal system.

It also taught me to stand up to bullies, because seven years later I stood up to mine. Got smacked around some by a man twice my size, and went to live with my mom.

Tree frog, I had the exact same thing happen. My mother was the abusive drunk asshole. I was prepubescent and cleaning the shitty apartment, waking her up on the reg before going to school, fighting with and getting beat by adult men, and feeling my life was fucking garbage. Not to mention the shame I felt from going to school and everyone knowing your mom was the town loose woman.  And, my dad was fighting for me in the courts and couldn’t win at the time. Joined the Marines cuz I was hard. Saw fucked up shit and lost friends and have had nightmares. Lost my daughter to who-knows-what.  I’m always an inch from saying fuck it. I got your back, yo. I use this medicine as just that. From your posts, I know you do too. Reach out if you ever need anything.

Also, I'm glad you're still with us.  I have certainly struggled to stick around.  Having a kid and other folks I care about has kept that in check thankfully.
