Having no trouble getting these to pin, at least! Would be sick if they’d mature, because this would be my best pinset yet haha.

Have you tried keeping it extra moist see if that helps clusters grow fast?

Funny you should mention, I decided on that right after posting. Just going to mist the ass off it regularly and make sure it has air.

Well, I've got this going on. Luteofolius in the same tub I use for subtropicalis. Growing on Buffalo dung, cased with vermiculite and calci-sand. Actually sent grain to bulk on 6/8, so I don't know what is going on. I can only guess that it may have gone a cycle or two of drying out before I cased it, and even then one more time it may have fallen under neglect. For now, I have the airstone as its sole source of hydration. I flip the tide pod container 180 degrees every twelve hours. This is "Zapalinamé" from Mexico. Like this grow, I similarly have no idea what's going on with Taxonomy in the Genus. I will have to construct a phylogenetic tree, cause I am not getting any closer to verified ID's, even with genetic sequencing. Out of the eight strains of luteofolius I have, they could just as easily be a mix of dilepis, cyanopalmicola, purpuratus, luteofolius, aeruginosus, or palmicola; excluding one of the only West Coast cyanopalmicola genetics I have that was verified via ITS using nanopore.
Even most recently, I have it on good authority that dilepis might in fact be a synonym for luteofolius, as with Gymnopilus thiersii.
While not necessarily having anything to do with Taxonomy, the brusing is perhaps another misunderstood and overlooked aspect. I believe these have actually .01% higher psilocybin on average than cubenis! Those are wild ones! They just lack the Polymer responsible for dephosphorilating psilocybin into psilocin. It does suck though to hear about a 15 gram consumption being a dud. It seems like there is a huge repository of undiscovered information in regards to the Genus Gymnopilus; and we have only begun to scratch the surface.
I definitely like to preserve the sanctity of the luteofolius/aeruginosus group, as I've seen respectable mushroom cultivators designate a luteofolius 'dilepis' and vice versa. Honestly guys a huge way for some of us to actively decode some of this stuff is through DNA sequencing. Mycota.org is a website that gives instructions on sending in dried specimens, and the continental mycoblitz was from the 7th-18th of this August. If anyone has dried material and is down to turn it into one of the mycologists there, Im sure they'd accept a few late-entry stragglers.

Gymnopilus punctifolius on sweet gum shavings. Inocculated with an agar wedge to some small grains on top of the shavings and about a week ago I put the colonized spawn to an airtight Tupperware container of the same sweet gum sawdust shavings. Im thinking of adding some gas exchange holes. While there's no cut and dried method for growing punctifolius, I feel like gas exchange holes will help as it does with other species within Gymnopilus.
If anyone wants spores Im down to throw you free swabs or prints just depending on if I get get them to reliably fruit. For ornamental use only

Didn't see this till now. Ask and you shall receive:

Also, a fun and welcome surprising discovery, the mycelium has a maple syrup scent. Hopefully that's not contams I'm smelling!

Some Lactarius species smell and taste of maple syrup. I would think it more likely the mushroom vs. some contamination.

I inoculated logs with Gymn luteus. Wanted to get my feet wet indoors too, so I spawned a jar to sterilized chips.

They keep pinning but nothing really grows... It's the Penis Pity of Gymns... Glad I still have the logs. Could I still spawn these jars to chips outside? Zero experience with Gymns.

I would cut holes in the bag and place it in a Martha or large tub to maintain humidity.
I think that if you try to simulate a colonized log with your grow bag like people do with Lion's Mane and Turkey tail,
or even a 5 gallon bucket with holes like people do with Oysters, you should get good results with luteus (and subspectibilis).
However, I believe luteofolius, purpuratus, and dilepis can be fruited on a flat surface, like cubes.

Pics to help visualize what I mean

And lastly a picture of G. luteus growing naturally.

Had a bit of a humbling on bvi this evening.  Ate .8g at a flaming lips concert and holy shit.. I had to leave.  Had to be escorted home by my buddy.. couldn’t even figure out my keys to get in the house.

Lived like a a entire lifetime before I came to.  Might’ve been pseudo dreamland mixed with heavy alcohol but came to and was wft?

Side note, the flaming lips can put on a hellava show.  Modest mouse before that is why I came and they were awesome of course but man.. that intro to FL is what sent me spinning

Update 11.9.25

After a mid scene costume change and more than a little patience we've had to cut two of our cast members. What they do in their off hours is their own business, but you just can't come to work contaminated. It's not fair to your coworkers.

Yeah, if it's a mislabeled culture or if it's some type of contam I'll burn everything but just in case I have what I have especially since there's a large discrepancy of scents between species of luteofolius, I think I'll let this ride out before I burn everything
:kthxbye:
I cased it & it's in my subtropicalis modded diaper Tek bin, sharing quarters with two subtropicalis setups and one other caeruleorhiza. Maybe these will be really good for cooking.
:stircauldron:
If it turns out to be contamination or a different species, that'd be the least of my worries with this project.
The worst possible turnout would be the end result containing amatoxin, but hey, at least we'll get a clearer understanding of species within Gymnopilus, which is one of the things what I'm all about.

Why don't you try to send them like this? Maybe start with a couple two gallon buckets as a proof of concept. Luteofolius etc, will not pin like this one is. Whatever it is that has triggering pinning, it must not be much in regards to work or maintenance of your fruiting conditions. I've also seen subspectabilis pin on agar, but never ever any strain of luteofolius that I've found or received.
Anyway, at the end of the day, while I'm still working on fruiting them more and more like cubes, in regards to the time spent in fruiting & yield, I think that if you do a simple indoor setup with luteus, you won't nearly have as much work cut out for you as you would if you were working with luteofolius/purpuratus etc. That being said, I'd like to make the distinction that growing them like a wood loving Psilocybe might be more trouble than it's worth, although it may still work. You could possibly get better yields harvest times if you made some sort of setup indoors, like your bag within a tub inside a tub, or something. Let me know what you decide to go with.

Exciting development. Buddy near the E.U. grew the F1 spores of Gymnopilus luteofolius "Evening Creek" strain that I found and remideated. Technically, given there was no label mix up, the spores that come from the fruits pictured here will be the f2's.

Well, finally seeing some action, but if there's a slowest / longest grow thread I should probably cross-post this there.

Gymnopilus subspecatabilis:
  • tissue culture from wild material collected on 2024-11-06
  • agar to grain on 2025-01-30
  • grain to 3 shoeboxes of roughly 50/50 coir and hardwood sawdust on 2025-04-26

A week ago, I was about to give up and chuck them outside, but when I took the lids off, I saw that two of them had sprouted mutant blobs. I went back to paying attention to them and trying to keep them somewhat hydrated, and now all three shoeboxes have pins. Granted, most of the glacial pace here is probably on me, but gyms (and G. subspectabilis in particular) seem to be in no particular hurry whatsoever.

Now let's see if I can manage to achieve an abort rate south of 100%.
