Mushroom Cultivation Tracker

Ever since I got back into cultivation, I kept running into the same problem: scattered notes, vague descriptions, photos stored somewhere else — data that completely lost its coherence a few weeks later. Anyone else relate?

I usually prepare lots of PF-Tek cakes, work with several strains, and take prints from interesting specimens to track lineage. At some point my brain simply ran out of room. I couldn't find an app that kept me organized without friction, so I built one around my own workflow — especially with how easy "vibe coding" makes things nowadays (otherwise, it would have meant a few weeks of barely sleeping).

I never planned to share it. But after a few weeks of use, and the relief of having everything neatly in one place, I figured some of you might find it useful too.

MycoLab — offline-first mushroom cultivation tracker (single HTML file, no accounts, no server)

One HTML file, works on PC and mobile, no account needed, and nothing leaves your device.

HOW IT WORKS

Four main tabs — Summary, Cultures, Spores, Strains — plus a "+ New" button.

Start by adding a Strain with a short code and a full name (e.g. "MR" = "Matias Romero"). From then on, every new culture (PF-Tek, Bulk, BRF Puck, Agar, LC or Grain) gets a unique ID automatically. Example: MR013P3

• MR — strain code
• 013 — culture number
• P — type (P = PF-Tek, B = Bulk, BP = BRF Puck, A = Agar, LC = Liquid Culture, G = Grain)
• 3 — lineage generation

When creating a culture you can add its source (a print, or the ID of another culture/agar). Preparing six identical cakes? Create them in one go — up to 50 per batch, with consecutive codes.

Every culture gets its own page: full lineage path, basic info, day counter, current status, a ★ selection mark with your own criteria, notes, photos, flushes with fresh yield weight, and a status history showing the day each change happened and how long each stage lasted.
• PF-Tek / Bulk / BRF Puck statuses: Colonizing, Consolidation, Fruiting, Resting, Finished, Contaminated
• Agar/LC statuses: Active, Contaminated, Discarded
• Grain statuses: Colonizing, Colonized, Finished, Contaminated

CULTURES tab: all your cultures with quick info, search by code or strain name, and filters by strain, type (PF / B / BP / A / LC / G) and status.

SPORES tab: register each print/swab with strain, generation, source, date, storage, status (fresh / viable / degraded / discarded), notes and photos — and see which cultures were derived from it.

SUMMARY tab: counts by status, this month's yield, total yield, and your latest harvests.

IMPORTANT — HOW YOUR DATA IS STORED

• Your data lives in your browser's local storage and saves automatically. Nothing is uploaded anywhere: once the page has loaded, the app makes no network requests (fonts are embedded — open the file in a text editor and search for "http", you won't find any).
• That storage is per device, per browser and per address. The online version, a local copy of the file and your phone are separate databases. To back up or move your data, use Export / Import: a single JSON file with everything, photos included (encoded as base64).
• Clearing site data — or a browser cleaning up sites you haven't opened in a while (Safari can do this) — can wipe it. Export a JSON regularly!
• Photos are downscaled to a maximum of 512 px on the longest side (JPEG) to keep things light. Lots of photos means a big JSON.
• Known limits: no sync between devices, no encryption.

Really nice! I'm working on something similar and you've hit a lot of the same pain points, clearly. Batching, label codes, etc. Props for the local-first / security-minded approach.

Thanks, I'm glad you guys like it.

Ras, I've actually thought about your optical system with QR codes several times. Incorporating a reader into it should be relatively easy, but embedding it inside would probably increase the file size significantly. Though I imagine there must be JS readers out there.

Or even barcodes, because for handwritten text you'd already need AI text recognition modules. Scanning labels from a phone would be convenient. Although I'll leave that for anyone who wants to modify it.

Not all of us have label printers, after all. :smile2:

I still don't know how it will handle it when the JSON data file gets big — I might run a test these days.

Oh man I’m digging this, I’ve been playing around with it for a few hours it’s great!

I’m not a personal fan of AI or rather its trajectory but god damn it’s hard to argue such convenience

If you’re planning on releasing new iterations at all I selfishly would love to see a couple things added :yesnod:
These are things that would be cool imo, if you don’t care by all means tell me to fuck off and make my own BUT like I said, I’m eating this up and a few tweaks would make it damn near perfect

It would be cool if you could rearrange the order of the strains and edit the name

the prints tab could maybe benefit from being a spore tab with the option to select between print or swab similar to how the culture allows for agar/pf/brfp

If when adding a new culture the source code and source print would have a dropdown suggested search ordeal

Also an option for LC in the substrate dropdown :crazy2:

By any means, jazzy as fuck, I’ve been really stressing about my cult notes or lack thereof and this is a gift

A million thanks for your feedback, Tri!

You're totally right, I really like your suggestions. And of course we'll add those features. I'll get on it tonight and update the link when it's ready.

And don't even get me started on how much the rise of AI screwed me over at first. I used to get occasional gigs building websites. We also had a patron who commissioned visual art for her projects... It was a mess. :mad2:

It took me ~4 months to write a voice assistant for my corporal mime exercises. I've always been really curious about this stuff. And it's true that earlier models outputted pretty unreliable code... but now they're actually great for certain things.

And if I want an app, I can save myself weeks of headaches — why not? I'd rather spend that time with my partner, cultivating, or browsing Shroomery.

I've seen some talk around about some app. Glad I found it, through that beef's lovely message in NOTM! Man this is dope. I'm telling you I've just started and wanted to keep track of things and my damn pen kept dying so I switched to journal app on my phone but that was PITA to tidy up. This! This is what I need. If you need any help don't hesitate to ask. Great work and contribution to this wonderful community you are now a pillar of!:seriousthankyou:

Idk if it's a bug or intended but when I change my substrate the code doesn't update. If it like MM001P1 for puck and I change it to PF, it won't update to MM001PF1.

Another 'bug', more of a convenience thing is, if you scroll down in cultures/spores display and open one of your saved ones, it will be scrolled down, not on the top of the page. This doesn't happen if you are on the top of the page of display.

Suggestions:
1)Add Spawn(grain spawn) in the substrate list
2)Add substrate pill next to day pill, or maybe redesign the generated code so it's easier to read. Using some separators like "-" or "/".

All of this feedback is from me using it on my phone. In general I'm very happy with the app!

Reishi! Thanks a million for your feedback!

Very good observations — and you’re the second person to mention adding Grains, so we’re definitely going to implement it.

I thought making Grains and Bulk separate felt a bit redundant, but hey — the community speaks!

And as for the codes, I noticed that the day before yesterday, so I’m going to fix it.

Tomorrow I’ll upload a new version featuring the option to create groups in Strains (suggested by Tri), cleaner code, and a few minor improvements.

And this week we should have the version with the changes you mentioned ready to go.

Thanks!

UPDATE:

We keep moving forward! Thanks to your feedback, we have a new version with new features.

GROUPS (STRAINS)

Now, when editing the list, you will find a new option at the bottom that allows you to add groups and organize your STRAINS according to your preference.

GRAINS (CULTURES)

We now have the option to select GRAINS as a SUBSTRATE. Afterward, you can edit the entry and change it to BULK, or add an independent entry for BULK and link it by the GRAIN's origin code.

SETTINGS

At the bottom of the page, you'll find a [ CONFIG ] button that takes you to the settings tab. There, you can change the app theme — Night, Day, and Custom.

You can also choose between three text sizes, offering subtle differences in readability.

You can enable/disable specific substrates you're interested in within the app (useful when there are options you don't use).

And finally — you can enable/disable the new indicator badges displayed over the entries in the CULTURES tab.

We have also fixed the code-change bugs when editing an entry, as well as the minor scrolling bug present in the entries.

As always — if you find any errors or have any suggestions, don't hesitate to reach out!

Hope you like it!

Really cool system, i filled in my own library to see how it works. I can definitely see myself using this, and will try to do so. :sunny:

Do you have any further plans for the project?

Thank you :hatsoff:

I'm glad you want to give it a shot, Mashedpotatoes! I hope you find it useful.

To be honest, I don't have any major plans other than polishing it based on your feedback and, once we reach a sweet spot, leaving it here for the community.

I still need to prepare a manual/introduction, and I'm sure a few more suggestions or bugs will pop up later on.

Let me know how it goes!

It's super cool, i've been cranking the brain machine to find something that works for me, and this could be it.

Could you clarify some things for me?

*Under agar, it says "generation", which is the last digit in the code. Are these transfer numbers or filial generations or something else entirely?

*If i go through multiple generations of a variety, i assume i add another spore print with the source code from the bulk culture. Same goes for taking clones from fruits, but instead you add agar and feed it the source code from the bulk?

Also I humbly request the feature to add cryovials/master cultures in the same tab where you list your spores, as the cultures tab seems to be more for categorizing "temporary" cultures, while the spores tab for longer preservation if that makes sense.

Having a list of your clones and master cultures seperate from the agar, pf, brf, bulk etc makes sense for me, but if you would do it differently im interested in hearing

I wish you bountiful fruits and godspeed

Re: MycoLab — Mushroom Cultivation Tracker (App) [Re: Mashedpotatoes]
    #29704714 -

Of course, thanks for your feedback!

Regarding the Agar — I was treating them as transfers. But you're right, that needs to be fixed. I overlooked it. :ashamed:

Yes, when cloning and creating a new agar entry — the source code gets added. Sources are mainly designed to give quick access to lineage tracking. Inside the entry itself (if you keep adding sources), you'll see the tracking tree created at the top, and from there you can jump to previous entries.

I see it as a convenient way to observe where your genetics are heading — by looking at photos, timelines, yields, notes, etc.

In fact, as I see it now — I should add to the AGAR entry a list of the CULTURES derived from it (just like with SPORES).

Regarding cryovials/master cultures, that's not a bad idea. I'll look into it.

Thanks!
