How come everyone I've ever talked to says you only need 3-4 hours of light in your grow chamber. But in the Mushroom Cultivator, Paul Stammets says to use 12 hours of light?? Not that the 3-4 hours hasn't been working, I was just kinda curious??

12 on 12 off mimics nature . Natures way is amost always better.
But, in this case. These shrooms don't need ALL that much light or time exposed to it.
The light only serves to direct the shrooms which way to grow. So, a few hours works fine.

Yeah I know alot of people say odd shit on this.
I always say and use 12 hours on/off with lights.

of course nature is the easy, and smart way to go... but I've heard that you can actually just expose them to a light as fast as a cameras once a day.. and thats enough.... of course, I'd say go with 12 on/12 off

Yo Roady,
No argument from me.
The Raccoon also uses 12/12, as that is optimal. But, less will suffice, Mycofiles Bulk Neglect Tek grow/log being a perfect example.

if your growing the legal ones, you can give them the optimal ammount of light. Most people growing illegal don't want a light in there grow area for that long.

Never seen any grow in the wild in Alaska. But, there are some being cultivated indoors -- for sure. The area around Palmer has plenty of feed stores, straw, cows & horses. So, getting bulk substrate material isn't a problem.

I have not gotten this far yet ......but ....... I will follow nature or the 12 hour method . The reason being mushrooms or similar to many vegetables , thay rely on and "react" to changes in light . Not in the same way as chlorophyl producing vegitation , but the same for chemical changes , and must of all which way is up .
Lots of light triggers growth , tells them to take in and utilize nutrients to maximize fruit size . I would guess less light would produce smaller fruits , more twisted than upright , and quicker to open veil to release spores .
Sounds like good area to research .

hmmm... mushrooms will grow in total darkness. I think light is just there to give it a direction to grow towards. Light doesn't make them bigger or anything, it just lets the mycelium know its at the surface and thats where it should start making carpophores...
Yea sure you should mimic nature, but nature also doesn't constantly do 12/12, different seasons have different sunrise and sunset intervals. Thats how plants know when to bloom, the change in lighting intervals.
You just have to let the surface see light for a little bit a day, like an hour even... If theres ambient light in the room that can enter the growing chamber, that will be sufficient.
