It sounds like the reason they are curling is the top of the cap is not growing as fast as the bottom, due to low moisture?

Is this also indicated by wavy caps?

They like being wet. I don’t consider these to be ready.


I wait until they’re dark and dropping spores but it’s your grow.

I spray it abundantly 3-4 times a day. He fills half of the cake at the bottom, it looks like they like this water ritual.

So I quit misting and increased FAE.  Black lesions on stems spreading and leading to aborts.  Any advice on this.  I think it is some kind of infection as it seems to spread.  2 of my boxes are showing this. 

Spawn looks and smells fine on going to bulk...I start misting when fruits are about 1/2" tall and try to keep casing moist but not soaked.  Any advice here?  If past experience holds, those 2 boxes are doomed.  3rd box is looking ok so far.

I’ve seen this in tubs when I run sketchy spawn. I would bet there is some contamination causing this, or allowing it to happen via weakening the colony. Squeaky clean spawn is so important when we grow these exotics with a long timeline. Cubes can certainly outrun some contamination, but these things give the bad stuff so much time to take over.

Looking for some feedback, particularly from people who pseudo case only. I have two 6qt shoeboxes that were spawned a month ago, tomorrow (July 13). Spawned at about 2:1 + 1/4” pseudocasing on top. Coir only substrate. They colonized the shoeboxes in about a week.

What is the opinion on how the surface conditions look?




I have misted twice, a week apart, starting a week after full colonization. Otherwise I’ve been doing my best to just LITFA.

Looks a little dry, but not too shabby. If you’re going to go uncased you’ll need to mist regularly. 1x daily until pins and 2-3/day depending on your climate once they start fruiting. Pseudocasing only is a good way to do it, but requires a little more effort from ya

Thank you. I’ll start misting more regularly. I was already planning on misting 2-3/day once pinning started. I was just apprehensive to soak the surface before pinning. Reading through the thread (I’ve spent a lot of time reading) I can only remember one mention of misting pre-pinning with pseudocasing only.

Excuse my ignorance, I’m just trying to learn/understand. Do you believe that these would not be successful unless cased? Is there any reason you’d choose coarse verm over other alternatives? Is there something specific about the surface conditions that led you to that suggestion? Or is it just your preferred casing medium for semps? Thanks.

Thanks for the tip on the psuedomonas.  So my question is where is this bacteria sneaking in.  My agar plates are absolutely squeaky clean (to naked eye anyway).  I had a few get some edge contamination in the past from me accidentally touching the top of the dish when putting lid back on it, but I figured that out. 

I just say that because I think my sterile technique in front of hood is good. 

I just jars with a synthetic filter disk rtv'ed over 1/4" hole per a tek I saw on here.  Ball no leak lids.  Always PC spawn for 2 hours at least at 15 psi.  I do my agar to grain in front of flow hood.  I have used mother plates in the past, but these are all off of T1 plates that came off clean looking cultures.  I have some T2 jars behind these.

Obviously there is a problem somewhere and I need to do something different.  Open to suggestions.  Coir is cocobliss that I pour boiling water over in a 5 gallon igloo and use it after it cools down.  I don't do my spawn to bulk in sterile conditions, but I have done it front of flow hood before and couldn't tell that made any difference.
