Agree about rhizo,  but this doesn’t seem rhizo to me.  Zoom in, the grain looks wet and a bit fucky too.

That said, I might still spawn if it didn’t smell off and if I didn’t have anything else going on.  But, I do have a bunch of projects right now, so if it were mine it would probably be trash.

I recently put a similar looking jar into a shoebox cause I wanted to try to get something to clone and start working on the genetics. It's getting green on the sides but it's still producing fruits so it really depends on what you're looking for

No PC is getting to 160C. You’re talking about a kettle heated from the bottom or with an immersion heat element. High temp there, but nobody should he putting their media bottles on the bottom of the PC. We use trivets. I’ve never seen caramelized agar from a PC run. Not grain either.

I boil my agar and DME in a kettle before I put it in a media bottle and then PC, but I agree about caramelizing during PC run. In the kettle though, still no chance?

Depends on the variety and moisture content of the grains, a lot of stuff.

Nobody really knows for sure what makes mycelium grow rhyzo or tomentose. It is not a valid indicator of contamination.

If there’s no odd spots and it doesn’t smell fucked I’d use it. I’ve had jars grow exactly like that and produce amazing flushes.

When in doubt shake and break. Healthy mycelium will recover over and over again. (Within reason)

Theres different types of rhizomorphic myc. Perhaps stipe or tree frog will chime in with more information, but that particular spikey, disorganized rhizomorphic morphology is a telltale sign of myc trying to outrun bacteria.

You can still grow mushrooms on bacterial spawn (within reason)

Ohh I see. I guess it does make sense. I usually see it when I do some unorthodox shit. I figured it had to do with nutrition/ water levels. Ya learn some new everyday ❤️

I’m also a Jew and hate throwing anything away so if it’s not a biohazard I usually let it ride 😂

I mean anything can burn on the bottom of a kettle if you’re not stirring and it’s not vigorously boiling. Why boil your agar before PC? I used to, but it takes so much time and energy for little to no difference.

It seems like I get more sediment if I just put agar, DME and water in the media bottle and PC it, but maybe that's just coincidence?

Agree.  It doesn’t seem to dissolve as well if you don’t cook it before you cook it.  Stick blender helps though.

It’s not. You’re a brewer, so you know as soon as you get that DME hot it‘s proteins will denature and coagulate. You can do that ahead of time and filter it out for really clear plates. I don’t find the utility in all that work. A little sediment never hurts, or you can let it settle and decant off as you pour your plates. You’re certainly not hurting anything by pre-boiling unless you wind up caramelizing your sugars.

With the break and shake to test for it coming back, if it just comes back the same does that mean the bacteria is too strong? I’ve done a break and shake after the first one because of this exact reason. I’ve always heard the myc comes back quickly if it’s not contaminated and it did but it ends up the same way.

Basically the break lets the bacteria take over better and become more obvious.

I don’t view videos. I’m a voracious reader and read the post. There’s a TLDR at the end though if you want the quick details. 😀
