Can confirm that what Celtreat calls 100mm disposables is the same size as what Vabiooth calls 90mm autoclavable petris.

I have some 100mm Celtreat without the grip ring and some 90mm Vabiooth right on top of each other and there is no way to tell them apart by eye. I am only certain of the difference because the Celtreat plate sample is from well before my first trials with the Vabiooth.

I have some glass 100mm and 70mm as well. Well crap, now I am on a tangent. I have holy grails, too. Let me grab a ruler and a spread sheet. Hold please.

Edit: to add, that I don't have any empty grip ring Celtreats lying around, but that would just make the outer edges of the bottoms 1 or 2 mm larger than the lids of the Celtreat 100s so call it 93mm max. Any tube with an interior diameter of 100 should work for all except the 100mm glass petris. Those would need an interior diameter of 105-ish mm.

Awesome thanks again rev.

So  @ladiesknight.

Sounds like unless you have the glass 100mm petris you should be able to just buy one of the cheaper 90 mm canisters.

Check ebay.

30$ free shipping.

I got this cage (Etsy, I think) in the BBQ/grilling section.I think you are supposed to put small vegetables in it. I use it to protect my glass petris in the PC. It cost me <$10. If I remember ritht they come in different sizes. I PC my petris and open in front of my flow hood. Easy Peasy.

Watch a YouTube video.  Practice making transfers to and from old plates once you have them to develop muscle memory without pressure.

This. Practice until you can do it your sleep. It took me almost a year to finally calm down, but I'm kind of an "on edge" personality, so that probably isn't typical. Point remains though that practice makes perfect. I screw up so rarely now that I actually had a plate contaminate the other week and I thought "wow...the audacity on this mf to fall in my plate!" Lol you'll get there!🤙

I am at 5000ft elevation. How do I need to adjust my PC times. I  am using bods method of taping 3 quarters to the weight of my presto 23 qt so it doesn’t jiggle.

Do I need to increase time or pressure?

For
Agar I’ll be using no pour, and holy grail plates
Honey LC because I have lots of honey
Spawn. Millet for now

Increase cooking time by 5% for every 1,000 feet above 2,000 feet elevation.

Pressure cookers work by increasing the pressure inside the pot, which raises the boiling point of water, allowing food to cook faster even at lower external atmospheric pressure. BUT — at high altitudes, the starting atmospheric pressure is lower, so:

A standard pressure cooker reaches a lower absolute pressure than at sea level.

That means the boiling point is still slightly lower, and the cooking temperature is lower, even under pressure.

According to USDA and pressure cooker manufacturers:

Do you guys think these are too wet to inoculate?

The grains were dry when I loaded them in jars. They came out the PC with some wet grains. I'm wondering if it's better if I let them sit for a week before I drop agar in.

If you are going to increase pressure, as opposed to increasing time, you should check with the manufacturer to verify maximum safe ranges for your particular pressure cooker.

I inoculate wet jars.  And dump more water in with LI.

Clumps suck though and I avoid them.

Not from a sterility standpoint. From a hydration standpoint probably

Hi folks-I'm a noob, barely graduated from AIO bags, but after months of lurking and reading, committed to doing The Right Thing. I'm on my third run of agar plates, and I've got a condensation issue. It's not impacting my use of the plates, but it's driving me nuts not to be able to see clearly through them.

I made a water bath using my sous vide rig, so I'm confident that I'm pouring at 47C, doing stacks of 10 plates in front of the hood, but I'm always getting what seems like a ridiculous amount of condensation. I read a previous recommendation in one of the threads to just let them sit in front of the hood overnight and it should clear up, but photo is 12H post-pour... Questions: 1/ What am I doing wrong? 2/ Should I just leave them longer?

I've been having condensation issues too. What worked for me was turning the heating up to 22c and leaving them in my SAB for a couple of days. Turns out my house was just too cold for pretty plates.

A standard pressure cooker reaches a lower absolute pressure than at sea level.

That means the boiling point is still slightly lower, and the cooking temperature is lower, even under pressure.

According to USDA and pressure cooker manufacturers:

Water boils at 202 degrees for me at 4500 ft so I effectively get the same pressure at lower temp. Sterilization is time and pressure driven. So I have to extend sterilization time by ~78% per the maths of standard thermal death kinetics (z-value of 10°C) since I can’t raise the pressure past 15.

I might be the only one who cares about this but found it fascinating to research:

- For other sterilization (e.g., substrates in mushroom cultivation or lab use), if pressure cannot be increased, extend time proportionally—e.g., 48% longer at 3,000 feet, scaling similarly to 78% at 4,500 feet.
-  Some pressure cooker manuals (e.g., Presto) suggest a general 5% time increase per 1,000 feet above 2,000 feet for cooking, but this underestimates needs for full sterilization, where studies show higher failure rates at elevation without adjustments.
