I’m curious. Has anyone used grain soak water in Milkboys Agar recipe? Would anything be gained? I would probably skip the molasses addition if I did it.

I utilize the PP5 bead containers and typically allow them to cool overnight in either the pressure cooker or the instant pot. The following day, I simply wipe off any condensation from the lids with a paper towel in front of my ffu. While I often use them the day after running them, I also have some that I allow to sit for weeks before putting them to use.

Freshly poured before the IP run.

That sounds terrible. Do you pc those with the lid on?

No pours have less condensation if allowed to cool completely before lidding and pcing.  With pouring, let it cool more.

LoL, yes I PC them with the lids on, Once they cool I take them back to my grow tent in front of the ffu and remove the lids one at a time in front of the ffu and wipe any condensation out of the lids. I will take a few pictures in a minute to demonstrate the process.

Grain water is a great nute source. I dont like using it because i never know how much to use lol. Could probably be used straight, but might make your culture sluggish. People use water agar for various reasons. No nutes neccesary. Id try a few different dilutions and see what i like

Burst grains can lead to sticky, clumpy spawn. I had a batch of grain that i accidentally had in the burner for 4 hours. When i remembered it there was almost zero water at the bottom and my grains had swelled up almost filling the pot.

Was clumpy and gross outta the pc even after rinsing a bunch of starch off and shaking hot. Still grew shrooms.

Techique and clean cultures trump all

After you PC they are sterile. As soon as you wipe them, they are not sterile any more. Good if it works for you, but I wouldn’t be toweling off things like that.

Have you tried the heating pad trick?  You just slightly loosen the lids and throw the pad over the top. Works great for holy grails.

After allowing the plates to cool and solidify following the sterilization process, I remove them from the pressure cooker. Next, I turn on the fan filter unit (FFU) in my grow tent and place the plates upside down. This positioning helps any condensation to collect on the lids rather than the agar surface. To prepare for their use, I soak one paper towel in alcohol to create a clean base for the plates, while I lightly dampen another paper towel with alcohol to wipe away any moisture from the lids. Although I haven't experimented with a heating pad, I have left the lids slightly ajar in front of the FFU overnight to dry, and I’ve found that both methods yield similar results. So far, I haven't encountered any significant issues, even after a year of practice, and I have plates that have remained uncontaminated for a month or more using this approach. I acknowledge, however, that there is indeed a risk involved in opening them after sterilization.

Well, I am a newbie myself, but for me it helps if I put a jar with hot wáter on the first plate of each stack and let it cool with the plates.
Hope it helps.

Hmm. I will try this (also a heating pad was suggested below, I can try that too.

My intuition is that pouring thicker plates will create more condensation. Is that true? I noticed that I've probably been pouring a little thicker than I need since my first set of plates I poured a few too thinly and may have over-corrected.

It's less about opening them, and more about using a sanitized rather than sterilized paper towel.

Fold the paper towels and put in an empty jar, include a pair of forceps.  PC this.  Sterilized is preferable to sanitized.

But personally, big fan of the hot mug on top of the stack.  At least for pour plates.  No pours I just dumped if it pooled, lived with it if not.  But cooling them in a Mylar lunch bag did help.

OK, since I broke my question-asking cherry:
This is a plate I dribbled vendor LC on 6 days ago. Sorry about the image quality, the aforementioned condensation problem makes for cruddy pictures and lighting. But all I see are little white spots of mycelium, nothing resembling contamination.

How long do I let this initial plate grow out before making transfers? My plates are incubating at room temp, which is ~70F, which might slow growth a bit...

Depending on your knife skills you could get a few transfers of the leading edge of the big growth at 6oclock right now if you wanted.

I typically take tiny transfers from the leading edge of the best looking spots as soon as I can, I feel like the quicker I can safely transfer off a germ plate the better.

My knife skills are best described as "entirely untested." This will be my first transfer ever. But my general demeanor about these things is "challenge accepted!" :tongue2:

in the beginning it's a numbers game,
take a bunch of them and get that practice going; fail more, fail better

(experiment transfers with a syringe needle, less is more, you just need one cell of mycelium - you don't need to see it, just need to touch it)

Say more.. what do you mean "transfers with a syringe needle"?

Slow, smooth, steady movements.  Each action with purpose and intent.  Imagine you are standing shoulders deep in a swimming pool. How slow would your movements be?

Nothing hovers above an open petri other than your scalpel. Keep hands and fingers to the sides of plates at all times.

Take more transfers than you need.  I have been liking to put 3 transfers to each fresh petri. (Big thanks to Tree Frog for that suggestion)

You got this.

Watch a YouTube video.  Practice making transfers to and from old plates once you have them to develop muscle memory without pressure.
