Jars don’t need FAE like a tub, but they do need a little gas exchange or they are prone to stalling.  That is why you see most people modding jars to add filters for GE.  If lids are unmodded, then some people leave the lid a bit loose to let the myc breathe.

Any idea if it's doable to transfer from foil to parchment? (looking to use agar next)

I don't think there is much risk but who knows

Ty

It would be easy to just take prints on paper, or wax paper, or parchment.

But if you already have the spore print on foil and want to send on paper, I'd heat scalpel or other blade in flame until red hot to sterilize, let cool to room temp in SAB, and scrape spores off foil to fall onto paper, wax paper, or into paper envelope, or into glassaline coin  / stamp collector envelope, and seal it up.

What is the purpose of using distilled water for mycelium culture storage (vs tap water) and can deionised water serve the same function?

A little late for a quick answer, but I didn't see a response, so pardon the self quote.
Quote:
Q: Is using distilled water an absolute must? Is demineralized/deionized water not good enough?
A: tldr: Ideally, no. For short term use, probably. For long term storage, maybe.
Demineralized and deionized water both leave behind trace biological and particulate matter that distillation removes. Since we are going to sterilize the water any way, you might think that this is good enough. However, although the sterilization process will kill any nasties, it will not remove them or their byproducts. So you will not end up with true stasis until any live mycelium consumes or ignores any remnant materials or harmful byproducts.

How are my shoeboxes looking? The mushrooms look kind of spindly and skinny
The shoeboxes are pasty’s Ez dial, the substrate comes up about 1.5 inches. After pinning I started misting about twice a day as the substrate starts to look dry

So the consensus on this changed every few months. Last of what I heard we declared nats a separate species, then it looks like we renamed to ochras?

Are they all just cubes? Or have we proven genetic differences?
If ochras are a different species is hybridization with cubes possible?

If u can convince me nats aren't just a slightly speciated cube that fruits crappier then I'm listening

:crazy2:

It's a cube that went under accelerated speciation due to the pole reversal that is taking place

Ochras and nats are distinct from each other and cubensis. All are very closely related and can be bred.

Yea its likely a recent divergence, idk if id link it to pole shifting tho lol

Cubes and ochra are in the same section and folks have hybridized them.

Natalensis I believe is in a different section.  I'd be surprised if they could produce a hybrid with the other two.  But I could be wrong.

Edit:  I am wrong they are in the same section.

Alan Rockefeller was given a sample, I believe, (Alan, correct me if this is wrong, I can't find a lot on it) that was labeled as Psilocybe natalensis, and he sequenced the DNA, but the sample was mislabeled, it turned out to be Psilocybe ochraceocentrata.

There's not as much about this online as I'd like, but on this thread, "Natalensis Cubensis Confusion":
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/29064774#29064774

Alan posts a link to this PDF of a scientific paper  about it called "Discovery of the closest free-living relative of the domesticated 'magic mushroom' Psilocybe cubensis in Africa"

Can't tell for sure, maybe try better photos and post again they can try to help you as much as they can, honest. Mind the flash or no flash, keeping
the camera still even if it means holding your breath, quality camera, etc.

For sure though is that it might need some misting a bit from what I can see in the photos!

Also wondering now, if it's possibly cobweb mold but not sure tbh.

That's mold. Pretty much if you see growth that looks different and dramatically outpaces the healthy growth, then it's something fucky.

I can't remember who said it just the other day, but I really liked it - "only evil moves that fast." 🤣

Do yall modify “sweater boxes”? (15qt tubs)
I got one im gonna try running unmodded. I made the substrate really thick and I’ll probably just dub tub it maybe. I don’t even do that with shoeboxes but I’m scared with more surface area air flow will be a issue

At least with 12Q no.  That’s got to be a similar footprint. If I was going to mod anything significantly larger than 12Q then it would probably only be a couple of 1/4” holes near the lid. It’s not such a large environment compared to a mono that you’d need to.

Do you mean the wide ones that aren't very tall, or the tall ones that are like 2 shoeboxs size side to side? I do the latter unmodded all the time. I posted one today.

And when the shrooms get too tall for an upside down lid, I put another tub the same size upside down as a lid ("dub tub", i.e. double tubbing). I  don't have a pic of that, but here are two of those (advertised as 16 quart, not 15 quart) with shroom canopies of x7x+. I'm sure you could grow similarly unmodded with the low wider ones

@nektar & smellyhobbit

Shoebox next to it for comparison. Has latches. I figured with the depth of it not enough air would reach down from just the cracks at the top? Idk flipping the lid might be enough. But they’re in a pretty stagnant room I found unmodified shoeboxes not having enough fae in the environment.

I seen this bad boy and wanted to try something different. It was $6 tho compared to the $1 shoebox next to it 😂

I did 3 quarts of spawn to a brick of coir. I think I might’ve been able to do 4 quarts and maybe even more coir. But 3 quarts seems like plenty for not even 3x a shoebox. I did try 2 quarts out in that shoebox too. I’m gonna see if beefier cakes is something I need in my environment 🤷🏻‍♂️ even tho I’ll have a new environment to fuck with very soon
