It's a type of slate, very common in south africa.

Any word on the strength of these? I have some on the way, but we'll have to see if there are real nats and not ochres...

Only heard of one potency test and it was 0.5%.  But it may not have been the best sample.  Expectation is like 0.5 - 1.5.

The mycelium likes to bruise though.  Stones maybe the ticket with them once stoning genetics are stabilized.

I think these might turn into my first pins at some point.

They definitely seem to appreciate the higher coir ratio.

Just to clarify / get better at distinguishing these two - these photos are all actual Nats (aside from the wild ochras)? Would be interesting to see cultivated side by side.

I definitely had FOMO and ordered "nats" - but after learning more, I'm glad that it's probably ochres. And if they actually are nats, that'd be cool too

Finally put my spawn to sub. Fingers crossed.

I am trying laymixing in my pan hpoo/coir recipe.

I thought the spawn looked pretty good. It recovered well after a shake at 100% and I gave it a week more to really consolidate because why not. But after a shake and break and mixing with substrate I was worried because some parts were really hard to break up. I thought I had missed some strong bacteria. Then I looked at one of the balls that I was trying to crush and believe/hope that they are stones beginning to form. So I left them all in and will let the trays breathe for a couple of days before adding a top layer. Time will tell.

Well they aren't slow to colonize.

24 hours later and almost time for the top layer.

They have been moving slowly for me but it's been cold for the past week.

4 x bags, straight coir 1:3 plus 1 part for a psuedo casing layer, these were spawned on the 2nd of April:

Thinking about casing soon. I have some fine verm but would like to find some coarse if I can. Also considering mixing with sand. Shouldn't need a ph fix for inert materials, right?

Felt like itโ€™s been longer but this guy is knotting up after a month, was almost going to chuck it as itโ€™s smelling a touch stale, Iโ€™d already cased it prematurely at full colonisation now debating whether to case again

I wouldn't case yet.  They do tend to overlay and yoshi has been running most of his uncased.

He said he had a tray that set for over a month consolidating and he was about to give up on it, decided to case it then, and got his best pin set yet.

But I've also seen a few different folks experiment with it on a couple of different discords I hang out on, and yeah it does tend to overlay.  So I would let it hit 100 and then wait a week before casing.  If that's the route you go with it.

And yeah you probably don't need to adjust the pH.  Though they might appreciate some extra calcium

Wanted to share a couple of plates. One of nats and one of ochra as a reference.

Not saying that this is definitive, but it may help because they do have a different typical look to the growth on agar plates ime. Ochraceocentrata typically looks more rhizomorphic and Natalensis usually shows less ropy mycelium on plates.

I added these to my post on the first page of this thread as well for a bit more visibility.

Yeah that's been my experience as well.  The two clones I took were likewise not ropey.  And one started to yellow quickly (hopefully this is an indication it will stone up well).

Looking at that pic of Ochra they do NOT appear to have subdecurrent gills which was always a sign of true nats from all my research.

This thread is literally choked full of all of the information that is publicly available on these two species and the morphological, microscopical, and genetic differences between the two.

Don't cherry pick a single photo to try to win a pissing contest I'm not even having with you from 3 or 4 days ago.  If you have a problem with the sequencing done by the mycologists in Africa and the name ochracentrata, take it up with them.

Damn dude

For the peanut gallery, this exact question about indoor versus outdoor gill attachment is addressed in the podcast that is linked in this thread on the first or second page.

Sometimes they'll do that with trees to make sure it's working properly. You'd know it's fucked up if it was placed in between psilocybes
