Ideally you wouldn't want such large drops on the surface. between that and blotting, you can see the mycelium starting to mat

If there's any way to remove a filter or two it would be kind of convenient having those adjustable vents....

 something to ponder for the future.

So I have this expensive ass monotub I bought before I read the posts here. The lid is tight as fuck.

It has HEPA filters which sounds like a good idea at first, but seem really unnecessary now and may be reducing FAE.

I think my surface might be a little too wet now. The past couple days when I come home from work I have 2-4 little pools of water I blot up with a paper towel.
To increase FAE, I'm thinking I should just crack the lid for at least a day and see how it looks.

What are your thoughts?..

I agree with the "leave it alone."

If you have to do something, put a quarter inch of fine or medium vermiculite on the top. Pseudo-casing layer like that is good, makes better grow conditions, and will soak up (and hold) a bit of the extra water.

I do that on every tub when I make up the tub. Helps prevent side pins too.

Good you're realizing the purpose-built tub is overkill and or counterproductive. We mostly use regular tubs. I put the lid on the top upside down. Is perfect. If the shrooms grow higher than the lid, I "dub tub", put another tub on top upside down. I took it off for the photo below.

I can definitely pop them out, the filters and the vents are independent. Is it ok to have the vents exposed to the ambient air? I've read that the polyfill used in monotubs here isn't meant to filter anything, but it feels scary to have it just exposed to ambient conditions even though I know that fear is probably unfounded

Thanks! I think we all appreciate a good fractal but the sierpinksi triangle is beautiful and a reminder for me to KISS.

Here's a cool, unexpected place it pops up in math that will definitely make you question the nature of reality

Depends on how much those adjustable vents really restrict without the filter.

Like if you were to close them sans filter, would it still get some fae...

I like Nektar's idea about the Verm to help absorb your condensation without actually removing the moisture from the tub.

....on that note Happy Pi day

I'm not too sure how much FAE I would get. There's a sort of lip on the adjustable part, and a "shelf" on the static part that I think would make FAE negligible.
Here it is in its least open state.

I'm open to the verm idea too. I just want my babies to grow big and strong.

Happy Pi day to you too! I'm more of Tau guy, but I do celebrate the big day.

definitely saving that link in your sig (the HHG is already in mine ). It's funny how many of the non-cultivation things I do already. Linux and my own VPN I spin up with some scripts I wrote, being the biggest stand outs.

For my next grow I plan to do one shoebox dub tub and one with just the lid to see what the differences/challenges are with each.

Let's see now. This is what most y'all are referring to.

With the added text: "These have very large beads of moisture created naturally by the heat of the mycelium. It is not absolutely necessary to have such large beads of moisture on the surface but this is my personal preference."

Linux good. Not sure how I feel about Ubuntu going to Rust base though.

For a side-by-side "this vs that" test with shrooms, for truly useful results, both the variant and the control should be (the same) clone culture.

Multispore is too varied, even within the same tub, to be a good comparison.

Sometimes I post this and people tell me something like "fuck off, gatekeeper / buzz kill", but I think someone who writes their own Linux scripts has enough understanding of at least the basics of scientific method, and input/output, to get it.

"The code don't lie."

WTF?? I haven't heard about that. I actually love Rust, I think it's inclusion in the kernel may be questionable, but Ubuntu has been making questionable decisions for awhile lol I actually had a few interviews with them awhile back, I'm glad I didn't get the job.

No you're making a good point. The genetics in MS and probably even LC are going to be all over the place. I think in the mycelium stage (ie LC) they're either haploid (and going to sexually reproduce) or diploid (effectively already have unless there's horizontal gene transfer) or a mixture (genetic roulette). A fruiting body is diploid, the spores are a haploid mix of genes from the diploid mycelium. Growing diploid mycelium from the clone at least minimizes genetic variation, I think. The edibles have definitely kicked in.

I will add for you, and anyone reading, one can grow fat canopy tubs of great shrooms without knowing those words or concepts. It's worth saying because some people see it and get hung up on it. I did early on.

But I would recommend not doing actual experimentation with a control group until you've grow say, 20 rounds of shoeboxes without contam, and you can do agar transfers to clean up cultures reliably.

Without that background, it's hard to know if differences are from the thing you're testing, or just variations in your process.

I'll go one further and say you could do meaningful A/B tests on some things using clone cultures without even knowing those terms.

Biologists did meaningful A/B tests on plants and animals before anyone had heard of any of those concepts, or even of DNA.

This is my 1 3/4 flush. There are a lot promising pins but overlay is starting to look

In other shoeboxes it was the first sign that tossing time was near but I didn't have so many cute pins

Is there some trick (misting , dunking?) to help those little fellas? Thanks in advance!

I like 90mm.  And taking multiple early transfers to one plate to cut down on my workload.  Because they're too big for one colony, unless I'm growing it out for storage.

The 60mm are cute, but after working with slime cups for years, I'm over all the extra work from using small containers.

Interesting. what's the purpose of putting multiple transfers onto one plate? To colonize quickly for xfer to grain?

Hey guys,

i am becoming desperate.
My agar experiments don’t succeed.
Put spores of different species and from different sources onto agar.
The growth does always look weak, transparent and wet.
Here are some example pictures of my plates.
Agar recipe:  12 grams light malt extract, 20 grams agar, 1 liter destilled water.
Other recipes with more nutrients showed the same kind of growth. (MEA, PDA, Kimmig agar)
Tried malt extract and agar from different sources.
Agar was sterilized in media bottles for 20 minutes at 15 psi in a Presto 23 quart pressure canner.
The plates have been poured in front of a flow hood and were sealed with Parafilm.
Made some test dishes, which have not been inoculated with anything. They look completely clean.
The plates which have been inoculated with spores were stored in a completely dark place at room temperature. (68-73.4 Β°F,  20-23 Β°C).
I dont’t know what to do next.
Change agar recipe? Increase temperature or light? Do you think there are enmeshed bacteria in all dishes? The prints and syringes were sourced from four different vendors. Or maybe there is just too much condensation inside the dishes which could prevent the myc from growing fluffy?
Thanks in advance for some advice how to proceed.

the second and third transfers all look the same?

Maybe try another brand agar?

Not too sure, I’m curious to see the solution
