ive been working on the hhg3 and hope to be more encouraging than ever to newer growers freaking out about contams.

the moral is basically:  unless its very obviously fucked up, send it. failure isnt the end of the world and i think people dumping jars without learning or even trying is the real tragedy.  this kindof mentality needs to die.  Ill dump imperfect jars but only when i dont have the time or space to fuck around.

also the gatekeeping/bullying thing. i guess im proud to say that i feel at least in part responsible for changing the culture here and i do so see less gatekeeping and bullying going on, ive begun working towards driving it to either extinction or irrellevance.

Like anything it's a balance. One of the reasons this place is superior as a source of info from reddit, youtube and facebook is because there is at least some low level gatekeeping of that knowledge. Would be impossible if it was a true free for all. And even with that said, people still seem to feel free to experiment how they like and to post about said experiments.

So i think the balance ain't bad on shroomery most of the time. But you've been here longer than I have, obviously.

theres a big difference between curating our knowledgebase and condescending or ridiculing people that in with their messed up aoi bags just trying to get help.

I’ve put a lot of weight in that writeup over the years, and I still think it’s quite relevant. But I’m glad that the culture on the boards is shifting and I appreciate your role in that, beef.

I confess that my fear for being perceived as a retard kept me from engaging with the forum quite a bit over the years. As soon as I learned to use the search engine I felt embarrassed to ask questions when I could instead spend hours scouring the engine. Not that it would take hours to find an answer, but I seek information overload with most things lol.

To this day I almost feel envy when established/semi-established growers post simple questions because it’s always a stinging feeling in the back of my mind β€œI didn’t think that was allowed!”

I’ve felt shame for my incompetence and instead of facing it head on and accepting that I absolutely was and in many ways still am a noob and allowing myself to just be a part of the board I instead spent most of my time lurking and bookmarking, and sharing what info I could gather over on Reddit to souls I knew were poorer than mine.

Insecurity is stupid, yet so powerful.

All that to say, while I absolutely want Shroomery to stay a place where good info is agreed with and bad info is laid to rest, I’m happy to see it become a bit more forgiving in the last few years.

Maybe it’s a change in my own mind as I’ve become more comfortable with the org, hard to say, but I think you’re doing good stuff beef and I know a lot appreciate it

ya im biting.  after all these years, im going to come out and say what i think. idgaf.

lord knows pasty has ever been a mentor of mine, bod too.

but lets be real.  the search function fuckin sucks.  you have to know a lot about a lot to know if youre getting relevant results

whos who.  who said what and when? sorry but i think its whack the way we treat new people sometimes. 

i wrote the hhg to put spoonfeeding to a minimum but ill say what i want at this point.  part of that is that roger rabbit said a lot of shit that wasnt true and people took it as gospel based soley on who he was, not his actual results.

he basically wrote a blank check with his official rules for bod to mistreat people and his ratings reflected it.  ya.  im saying it was lame.  i acknowledge bod as one of my mentors in the hhg but i dont have to respect the way he used to treat people.

like i said.  im working on what i have to say.  might take some time

Character flaw or not, sounds way better then telling everyone who you(in your own mind) think you are 2 minutes after meeting them for the first time, because you don't want them to think you're something you're not..... Well, here's my take on things:

1. This place really IS a free-for-all. Anyone can register for an account and start posting. Spambots, puppets, and extreme harassment are about the only things that'll get you banned. I catch random side conversations in mush cult and other subforums that are all over the map. The politics forum and the pub are both filled with people I'd never even smoke a joint with, much less trip.

2. One component of that free-for-all is people scanning the boards trying to correct misinformation and give out good advice. But those people can still be random, wrong, or just generally dicks about their point-of-view. You, know, since they're...people.

3. There are also people who have worked to write teks, compile guides, set up stickies, etc. Still, though, they're ultimately part of the free-for-all. We all are.

4. My biggest concern from the standpoint of "gate-keeping" information is preventing the viral spread of shitty information and techniques. I don't actually give a shit what anyone does in the privacy of their own home, or how skilled/knowledgeable they are when they start climbing this particular learning curve. They gotta figure shit out for themselves anyhow, just like any other farmer.

5. There is naturally a time period in any new pursuit where we get insecure and try to find authoritative voices and instructions to cling to. If we stick with said pursuit, we eventually see a lot more nuance based on our own experiences, and our "authorities" either lose their luster, become peers, or both.

As a music analogy, it's OK to me if someone's like "hey, you ever heard of that band Pink Floyd? They have this album Dark Side of the Moon that syncs up perfectly with Wizard of Oz." I'm not gonna ask them for proof, or ask them to name three songs off "Atom Heart Mother." But if they come out and say "You know that guy from Pink Floyd, Syd Barrett? He left the band because he ended up in the loonie bin after eating too much acid and thinking he'd turn into an orange," then I'm gonna say "No, that's bullshit," and then probably talk their ear off about the early history of the band lol
