Do you have hard water?

Or live in very humid place?

Causes could be chloride ions from salt or hard water (after washing rinse with distilled water and dry immediately).

Avoid abrasive cleaners and prolonged exposure to acids.

Dry promptly.

Maintenance:
Passivate the stainless steel by boiling water with a small amount of citric acid or vinegar occasionally , then rinse and dry.

Passivation is a controlled process where a weak acid (like citric acid or vinegar) is used intentionally to clean the stainless steel and restore its protective oxide layer. It’s safe and beneficial when done properly...

1. Purpose of Passivation:
  - Removes iron particles or contaminants from the surface.
  - Reinforces the chromium oxide layer that makes stainless steel resistant to corrosion.

2. How to Passivate Safely:
  - Add 1–2 tablespoons of citric acid (preferred) or white vinegar to a pot of water.
  - Boil the mixture for 10–15 minutes in your PC.
  - Empty, rinse thoroughly with clean water, and dry completely.

This is a periodic maintenance step, not a daily cleaning practice. It can help restore the surface and prevent pitting from worsening.

Is there a dissimilar metal in contact with it while wet?

No. But I do have a raised stainless steel plate standing on bolts to raise jars out of the water. Replace with plastic spacers?

I wouldn't,  find some nylon or ptfe bushings... or o-rings/gromets...
Food-safe silicone or rtv would work.. or SS bolts

And to add to that there's different grades of SS so even if you opt for ss bolts (which is probably a good idea long term) it may be beneficial to add some rtv to the contact point with PC.  And will reduce scratching

Hello all, first time post here after a lot of lurking/reading.

So I’m using autoclavable plastic Petri dishes. Once ran through the PC, what is the best way of storing the dishes until I’m ready to pour my sterilised agar solution?

I was thinking of investing in a vacuum seal machine to seal the sterilised dishes within a plastic bag until ready to use but perhaps I’m overthinking it.

I guess another option would be to run both the dishes and the agar solution within the PC at the same time and then move both into SAB and pour immediately but I’m open to any other ideas.

Thank you!

No, it’s only rated for 90* C, so it’ll start to melt in a PC. Listen to lewdoja
