Psilocybe fimetaria, west coast Sweden (Image heavy! Updated Oct 5 2026) * 8
    #28975421 -

A friend of mine found suspected Psilocybe fimetaria last year. Since I'm located only an hour away I decided I should visit him this year when the mushrooms started showing up. On Saturday I got the message and packed my camera gear.

The habitat is a cow pasture about 10km from the coast and I have seen that one of the very few reported locations in Sweden is only 10km away (right by the sea shore). The pasture had Juniperus communis, Calluna vulgaris and blackberry bushes growing on it. The mushrooms grows in groups on decayed dung. I managed to find a few that had bluing on the stipes and bases. Pelicle is present. Smell is just like Psilocybe semilanceata. When I got home I checked for a separable gelatinous string on the gill edge with a sharp needle but it was not there, so I ruled out P. liniformans.

I shot about 200 photos, these are the best:

One of the photos with mushrooms in my hand have 4 Psilocybe semilanceata (maybe the fifth is P.f) for comparison.

I hope you enjoy the mushroom porn!

Beautiful mushrooms! I’m very jealous I have to say. I’d love to get my hands on some of these babies. Such a gorgeous looking species.

Well done!

Did you take any home with you or did you leave them all?

Great pictures! I think this is very promising for P. fimetaria. Southern Sweden?

Oh and by the way knarkkorven, I nominated your second pic for pic of the month as it’s definitely one of the most beautiful pictures I’ve seen on this whole site aha

You can see they bruise quite a vivid blue in the stem base, check the picture where he's holding them in his hand besides the liberty caps.

I just hope he brought back some colonized dung to see if he can get some more fruits at home.
Would be excellent to see them growing step by step, so to speak.

Anglerfish: Thanks. Yes, south west. Very close to Gothenburg.
I did not bring back any dung.

Mr. Toxic Waste: I brought the ones on the white paper home. Thanks for the nomination.

Nate em all: Yes, a few of them. This is the best photo showing bluing:

Beautiful pictures, thank you for posting! Did you take any prints? Have you tried growing them yourself? How is the potency/ experience with these? I hope you get a chance to post a trip report.

I found them yesterday, so no time for bio-assay. My friend describe the potency as weak. No plans to grow any. No prints made.

Hell yeah! Remembered my old login...

Being "the friend" of OP, and agreeing that they are captivating in their natural habitat, my suggestion would be to leave them there. While they are active, they're no where near libs, and as a rare and fascinating species it is likely better of left to live it's life in peace... :mushroom2:

I must say that if I happened to finally find this species, I'd be more than happy to give it a go with an attempt at cultivation.
I honestly don't really care if it's considered weak, it is so intriguing to have an active dung loving species around.

Other than that, congratulations with your badge, very well deserved and nice to see another Scandinavian on the team! :bow2:

Of course, science uber alles!

Also, it is quite a colony growing over there, and seeing as I have likely picked these unknowingly thinking they were libs for years I don't see the harm in doing that in that particular spot. So, lucky you if you find something like this and have the opportunity to try them for real. If you only find a few, leave them be so they can flourish.

Agree. I'm thinking about mycelium transfer or something. Planting a piece of fruiting dung in the largest cow pasture I know. Spread it to new land full of food...

Thanks. How did that happen?
I feel honored, and also scared because now people will trust my sometimes weak identifications.
I will try to be responsible.

Yes!
Anyway, GM, you have a Hasselblad camera. You go by this place everyday. You should help fill up the thread with more photos! Maybe also post the ones from last year that you showed us in the Swedish forum that spurred my interest (after my initial serious doubts)?

I just feel so lucky that I had the possibility to document this species and can't wait to go and do it again. A lot of rain this week. I think next week will be very good.

A bonus: Picked out a couple of more photos.
