I found some psilocybes, but not sure which ones..
    #1008104 - 10/30/02 09:47 PM (21 years, 4 months ago)

i'm in sw british columbia and i found some blueing shrooms in an alder thicket, but i'm not sure which they are. they were found growing in singles and the stem is about 4cm long and the cap is 2 1/2cm wide.
my feeling is that they are Psilocybe cyanescens but i would like to be sure.

i have the audubon book but it doesn't show half of the active shrooms in b.c.
is there a website that has pictures/descriptions of the rest of the psilocybes in this list?
it seems mushroom john's website is down

I will see what I can do for you, where I found them, they were just growing in a lawn in clumps of clover, I am honestly not sure what is underlaying.

I would be very interested in a cyan print however, that would be fantastic. I am trying to grow baeo's from some stem tissue however I am doubtful if it will work.

In my research of how to grow baeo's however people do talk of them growing as any other woodlover would. Who knows?
Best of luck bud.

that would be prime if you could just scoop up some mycelium, actually i could just give you some colonized chips. do you have access to a wood chipper? i looked into renting one and its 175$$!! for a couple hours, fucked up!

upon looking at those pics i'm sure what i have is ps. cyanescens, excellent. the ones i found just seemed smaller and have a flatish cap. probably just stunted due to the lack of rain.

did you click on any links in the replies?
seriously.
i can find a picture on almost every species i want by using dogpile and google.
just type in the species. simple.
if you think they might be something else, what might they be?
my girl found the first cyan in my hometown yesterday. a single.
she ate it and was shocked at the power locked in that one single guy.
anyway, cyanofibrillosa looks similar enough for mycologists (?) to confuse it with cyanescens. subaeruginosa seems similar enough. nothing else is wavy, though, i dont think....

I dont have access to a wood chipper (at the moment, my grandpa has one in another part of vancouver, but I'm not sure how much of an ordeal it would be to snag that for a day, probably not too bad). However I do know where large piles of chipped alder are located around campus, and I know where the landscaping dudes store all their stuff here, I am heading out friday or saturday to check some places on campus where I saw alder chip piles last year but have since been overgrown with grass and blackberries (prime?? i think and hope so).

I am having trouble putting sentences together, so I am going to go to bed, I'll be back sometime tomorrow I'd imagine - tomorrow I am going to photograph and document exactly where my baeo patch is , so that i can locate it without capaphores showing and perhaps snag some mycelium.

(sorry about legibility / all that, I've been up for a long time )

Get some pictures and we can ID these psilocybes for you! As for you people talking about preparing psilocybe beds your search for woodchips can be a bit more general than just pure alder chips. Looks for anyplace your citys workers have been clearing debris and you will notice they produce many piles of woodchips. Another method is to find a hardwood mill, they produce shittons of excess chippings and are generally happy to let you come take them away. If your up in bham i know there is a good alder factory down in the skagit valley that i personally have gotten many loads of chips from. Rakw

i'm fairly certain that they are ps. cyanescens. the link jovial posted had a nice selection of cyan pics.

i don't know of any hardwood mills around here. i phoned all the woodchip places and they only sell hemlock and fir chips. i'll look into the land clearing debris, also animal bedding is made from hardwood i think. aspen i think, is that suitable?

those bastards won't let me across the border so i won't be coming down anytime soon. :0(

I have heard of alder chips being used before, and the people were giving it positive reviews. I was just thinking for ease of retrieval (instead of buying, going and filling a garbage bag somewhere).

P. Cyanecens and P. cyanafibrilosa do not look similar at all becasue the caps of cyanofibillosa are conical tpo convexed and do not become wavy like P. Cyanescens. The photo losted as P. cyanescens in David Arora's book Mushrooms dymistified is actuall Psilcoybe cyanafibrilosa.

Look at Pauls stamets picture of P. cyanafibrilosa on page 113 od Psilocybin mushrooms of the world with its brown stuntzii colored cap and then look at the hygrophanous changeing from chestnurt to straw colored wavy cap Of Pauls image of Psilocybe cyanescens on page 111 of PMOPTW.

there are a lot of diffenernces between the two species and they look nothing likeeach other.

Viscid, I have wavy fotos of in vitro grow P. mexicana, P. caerulescens and even P. cubensis. It is a characteristic of the genus psilocybe. I even have some wavy P. baeocystis osted at my site which will be up here again at the shroomery.

P. stuntzii,s also get wavy caps, as do four of the australian species related to P. subaeruginosa.

Looka t my post in shroom pictures and also at Roadkills shrooming with MJ images posted two days ago at the mushroom hunting forum to see wavy caped stuntziiz.

mj, its easy for you to say two mush dont look alike, but how many mushrooms can you identify?
how many subtle characteristics are obvious to you?
for an amateur identifying any mushroom is decent
thankfully Ps stain blue
how easy would it be for most to identify them w/o blue staining?
peace all
mj you do great things

Actually not all Psilocybe mushrooms stain blue. Most liberty caps have hardly any bluing in them whatsoever and neither do Psilocyben pelliculosa or P. silvatica. Concocybe cyanopus only have a light bue color at the bulboues watery based stem. Not all P. cubensis stain blue for that matter.

Bluing is onlan indication that their might be psilocine or psilocybine in them and not an indication of potency as originally suggested int he early and middle q950s my mycologists Rolf Singer and ALexander H.. SMith. Not all inocybe mushrooms stain blue, nor do allof the Gymnopilus stain blue.

In fact many people here post images of mushrooms which they say are staining blue when in fact they are looking at cateria of a blue nature or rotting shrooms which appear black.

Also many people post messages that the shrooms turn purpple. Purple is only part of the color of the spore deposit which is generally chocolate to purple-brown in Psilocybe species and there are more than 87 other Psilocybe species chich contain no psilocybine at all so not all Psilocybe mushropoms stain blue.

Not all blue rigers stain blue. IT depends on weather conditions and also on human handling.

and sometimes on sun condiitions after light rain.

There are more than 2200 images of 57 psilocybiaN SPECIES OUT OF A TOTAL OF MORE THAN 190 NOW KNOWN AND IDENTIFIED SPECIES POSTED AT MY AWEBSITE. yOU C SHOULD GO LOOK AND MAKE SOME COMPARISONS. i WILL BE ADING MANY NEW IMAGES OF BOTH INVITRO AND IN SITU IMAGES TO SHOW HOW DIFFENRENT A PARTICULAR SPECIES CAN LOOK WHEN GRROWN INFDOORS AS TO WHATIUIT LOOKS WHEN IT IS GROWN OUTDOORS.

p. CYANESCENS GROWS 7-9 INCHES TALL IN VITRO AND ONLY FOUR TO SIX IN A NATURAL HABITAT. p. MEXICANA RESEMBLE LIBERTY CAPS INTHE WILD AND THEN WHEN GROWN INDOORS THE CAPS TURN UP ON THE LEFT AND RIGHT OF EACH CAP. tHERE ARE IMAGES POSTED HERE AT THE SHROOMERY TO SHOW COMPARISONS, INCLUDING p. CUBES WITH WAVY CAPS AND p. CAERULWSCENS AND EVEN DIFERENCES AND SIMILARITIES OF p. CAERULESCENS WITH p. WEILII.

SEE THE FOLLOWING url IF IT HASN'T BEEN DELETED BY YAGE.NET HERE AT THIS POST:

There are three pages to this post which started out as a complaint about Mr. G, who apparently did not know that pineapples are from Paraguay and Brazil, not Hawaii. And neither were the cattle which came to Florida were frpom Europe and Africa and not fromthe far east.

here is the URL for comparison photos of some of the characteristics and similarieties of the genus psilocybe.
