Hard to tell but if the other four plates have nothing (yet) it's possible to cube myc ... if your technique was on par.

Take a couple SMALL cuts from differ leading edges to their own plate . Flame in between each .

Even if mold you'll gain practice in the process as well as what to look for and the ways it grows.

Thanks! Yeah I'm hopeful my technique in the SAB was clean because there are no contams in the 20 plates I poured, and my brf cakes are also clean (although i know they are hard to contam). I took some wedges and placed them on clean plates. I really hope it's cube since it started growing from one of the marks I made with the inocculation loop

I think you're good. GT from ans syringe is not gonna be rhizo. That is thin and wispy but I'm gonna suggest that it is very firm agar which isn't great for germinating spores.

It looks like the agar is pink? And the mycelium is eating the color as it goes? It is also probably high nute agar. The myc travels slow because it has an abundance of food right where it's at. On low nute agar myc will usually travel fast and more rhizomorphic then start eating more, including the color after it is more established.

Transfer on to low nute agar if you can. That will also help get away from any bacteria that may be there but I think it's good.

Thanks a lot for the info! You are spot on, I made some brf agar, with red food colorant, that's a bit too nutrient rich and has some small sediments. And true, I found out too late that the regular agar was too hard for spores and tried to do a warm pour of softer agar on top of the 5 plates I inoculated with the spore syringe but only this one grew. I transfered to some plates with hard and some with soft agar but they are still nutrient rich, when I get new sterile plates I will try with less brf on the mix. Thank you!

I bought 10 plates when I just started growing again and started agar work so I could get going right away.

While those weren't as hard as the stuff I made my first batch, they were harder than I make it now.

I prefer the softer agar. I would definitely recommend trying it.

I’ll definitely try less agar agar, since I’ve always used 2%, and it’s good to see what difference it makes. I just doubt if my 1.6% agar would be as hard as yours.

Does this look ok?  I see what looks like the start of Rhyz, but its very fuzzy and I feel like its bact or mold.  Thoughts?

That's encouraging. What about this one? It feels worse than the one above.

Can I pour hot, then let the plates cool lidless in front of my flow hood? Or is it just best to wait for 117f, pour, stack?

Also, I see soo much about no pour, but I also know that most work in SABs. Is pour the preferred method if you have the means (flow hood)?

Mold on the second set. See the growth pattern is all sporadic without reaching outwards and the end of the mycelium. That's how you can tell. They're toast.

Let them cool in front of the hood but leave the tops on the plates. I'll pour 4000ml at a time at the end of the day. Leave them stacked up against the hood face overnight and wrap them first thing in the morning. Zero condensation ever.

I also pour mega hot

Pouring is preferred if you're doing volume and have a hood

I poured 20 plates, then stacked them all in one column and left in front of the fan. Hour or 2 later and they ALL had condensation, which was the opposite of what I expected. Based on your comment here, it sounds like all I needed to do was leave them in front of the fan over night and then wrap in the morning and the condensation would have been fine?

So the give away here is the "messy" growth, almost like someone tried to organize individual strands of polyfill vs the more organized, silky growth of myc? I also see in his pics that theres a ring of not yet visible growth around the edge. Is that what Ive heard called a "halo"? I've had growth like this on agar, and I feel like this explanation just provided a very important piece of the puzzle that I was missing, so thank you!

Im in the upstairs apartment, so I do kinda deal with that too, but my plates got bad condensation almost immediately, which I assumed was the temp swing caused by being in front of the fan. I didn't consider leaving them til morning though, so thanks for that!

The polyfill thing is a great way to describe it haha. I have yet to see an active of any species that doesn't reach outward. So yes, that would be the key identifier!

A halo as you can call it (I'm not sure what the proper name is, but that seems fitting,) will still occur with mold. OP can set the plate aside and maybe just maybe healthy mycelium will eventually poke out enough for him to grab but I very highly doubt it with those plates.

"Will still occur with mold" - so youre saying that that "halo" with tiny strands is myc behavior too? As in that alone is not an indication of trouble? Bc I've noticed that a lot and initially assumed it was just super young myc spreading but I've seen mention of the "halo" being problematic. It could be that the halo pictured was different, so THAT particular halo was a problem. Sometimes this gets a bit confusing.

The halo should not be labeled as problematic by itself. Healthy mycelium halos all the time! It's just new growth

Speaking of halo's.. I was wondering about this plate why the mycelium seems to break through the halo.

Does that say anything about the halo being bacterial? The growth on the bottom right of the picture also doesn't seem to have the same halo behind it.

Got bz last night. Waiting for 10 clean plates of PE clone and nats from a spore print transferred a few times, so I can tiger 2.0 drop these all into jars! This is my first real grow and I’m excited to get started!
