Yeah I need a lot of spores for this and I'm a bit concerned about any effect it may have on the cows but down the road I might try it.

I’m almost positive. I know exactly what type of sprayer you’re talking about. You can unscrew the tip and then it just comes out in a stream.

That’s gonna happen already. It’s natural selection out there. The mushroom that does the best is the one that needs to be cloned. You don’t need to add more variability.

I also think you should “cheat”
You should go to the marketplace and find somebody who’s been already growing Cubensis outside in a cow pasture in a similar climate to yours. They would be able to send you an agar wedge that is already clean and bred for its environment.

If you made a liquid culture based off of that and you were able to keep it clean. Then you would be spraying some thing that is already what you’re looking for.

Yes I forgot that the tip comes off. Cool, thanks, and this answered my question about if I needed added grain or if the manure had enough nutrition, and the sprayer is a great idea for inoculation. (If I ever did need to go back to spores, I could also use the sprayer:crazy2:)

Mr Piggy said:
Yeah, that's not going to happen.  Cubes are a tropical/sub-tropical mushroom.  You will have a lot more luck growing them in bins or patches.

I know, but I guess my interests and goals have changed over the years. If I ever just want an end product I have some many great and easy effective teks from shroomery I can follow and get the end product. And there is a ton of great science that's frankly just too advanced for me, I've tried to learn and I think a bit maybe gets in my mind but probably gets corrupted.

I guess I'm more interested in art than science. No way will it ever be as efficient as the science methods but there is something neat about it. Cheese can be made in stainless steel tanks, sterile environments etc, or it can be made in 500 year old wooden barrels. Wine is the same, it can be made in controlled ways or the old feet and clay vat and open air and old barrels...

Maybe it can't be done with cubes, or it's foraging wild, but I'm looking for something a bit in-between.

An RR reply I saw on an old tiny thread kinda inspired me. He said dried myc was used by the ancient Chinese in their mushroom cultivation.

I'm ok going down a dead end road. And if it does work or even if it fails maybe the journey will interest some people here. Idk.

Thanks for the help everyone sincerely I think I have a better starting place now to chase this. Cheers

So here’s a thought, why not try to get liberty caps (Psilocybe semilanceata) established in your cow field instead of cubes?  Sounds like you might be in the right environment for it, and you’d be going with the flow instead of fighting your way upstream.

Anybody have any insight into yields of two tubs vs one tub of double the depth (same ratio)?

A single spore print can contain millions of spores, and spores are tasteless and non psychoactive, they have 0 effect on the cows.

You could easily make some spore solution and mix it into your water trough, fuck it, take liberty cap spores and cube spores and put them in the water and you just might end up with something

You will find plenty of examples.
Lower spawn ratios (1:1- ~1:3) are favorable when the spawn is in question. There is less territory for the myc to claim, which means less time for invaders to gain a foothold.
As far as the depth is concerned. When there is a larger moisture reservoir for the colony to draw on there is always the possibility of increased yield. It is the job of the mycelium to break down nutrients and move water from the block into the fruits.
There are a plethora of factors that can obfuscate this, such as culture, preparation of coir, technique etc.
The baseline average yield for a quart should remain fairly constant, it is usually a trade off between colonization time and yield when exploring different spawn ratios (sub depths)
Have you seen stipes thread on pseudo-casing/top layer?

Haha I’m sorry if my explanation was a bit tedious. The truth is practically there’s nothing to sciencey about cross breeding. It has been tried and documented so many times that many people attempt it and totally succeed without any fundamental understanding of what is happening on a cellular level.

It can be accident polished but I think it is important to know the fundamentals first, always. It wasn’t my intent to discourage you, but rather try to make a sometimes problematic and often difficult to grasp concepts more accessible to the layperson

Sometimes I am not the best at it

Hello,

Bought jars for PF tek to get back into growing but all the sudden understanding bulk and oat tek and know it is time to upgrade the grows.

Running into one question, how to inoculate the first jar(s) that can be used as the master spawn jars for g2g transfers? Plan is to PC ~10 quart jars, spawning 8 and maybe keeping 2 for a g2g master jar.

For the originals - it looks like a hole should be punctured in the lid, apply a filter disk, PC the jars and then inject a Liquid Culture through the filter disk right ontop of the grain in the standard sterile environment. Is this the correct process equivalent to the spore injection for PF tek?

Should I shake it once I inject the LC ontop of the grain?

Thank you!

Next step from PF tek should be agar.
Agar is also essential step before and after LC. So jump from PFtek to a 2 dimensional mycelium plane (agar) before a 3 dimensional one (LC) because it's difficult to detect if the mycelium is alone in liquid medium.
Use agar to inoculate your master jars (pint or 1/2 pint is enough) then proceed to g2g to quarts.
And, if possible, always avoid contact and friction - like the needle trough a filter - it's a potential vector of contamination, it's preferable to quickly open the lid and squirt to the grain, IME.
Best of luck in the transition!

Nine is right. LC is only recommended for more advanced hobbyists for the sole reason that turbidity and influence can often evade detection in a 3-D liquid medium as the colonies split apart as they do on agar.
Try to develop your inoculation technique by practicing with agar first if you have LC do as was previously stated gently lift the lid and squirt some solution in. What is even more preferable to me is free pouring, although I would not recommend that to you at your skill level.

Some ppl wait for recovery to shake for lc inoc..
Don't stick thru sfd you'll break your steril barrier.
Lift lid partly.

would anyone find a comprehensive visual guide for aseptic technique inside the sab useful? Like a pictorial and gif/video series breaking down all the basic techniques and more: I see so many people ask questions like how do I do this or that and how do I set this up. Thanks 9, Fiddlehead & LewDoja
I'll get a PF tek grow going and experiment with Agar in the meantime to prepare for the grain jars! Thanks for the opening the lid tip if I do decide to squirt some LC in one!

Hope you all have a great day!

Yes of course. I think someone needs to fight against the millions of incorrect cleaning explanations on YouTube and reddit. The other day I saw a video saying they use 91% alcohol to sterilize their shoeboxes before putting substrate down. I was like "there is so much wrong with that sentence" lol

I also wish someone would do a time lapse video of the stages immediately proceeding the final post pin stage. I've seen a million videos showing pins to full grown shrooms, but few showing spawning to bulk with a focus on knotting and primordia stages.

The best answer is an airtight jar with a silica gel packet and o2 absorbers.
For people growing significant weight I would recommend the same thing with a gallon ziploc and double vacuum seal.
Verum subsequentis has an awesome thread on dry storage.
