Hello first time grower/forum user. Not quite sure the mold but I believe it to be pin mold/rhizo. As far as I've read the recommended course of action is to throw it out (hoping there's an alternative). Any way to prevent this in the future?

I posted these jars a few days ago concerning the jar to the left. I asked if I should shake up the jar on the left for a second time and somebody told me to just wait a few days, which I did. It is colonizing except for the top part, unlike the one on the right where the whole jar is colonizing.

Should I wait longer or shake it up? Or what should I do?
Can the jar be all bad? And what can be the culprit of the jar being like this?

Usually my jars colonize at the same rate and the top also gets colonized.

In doubt, always shake. That’s the way to get an answer from the myc.
From what I can see the myc seems healthy…
Could be the case that the top grain dried via faulty filter
Ask the question, shake

They look good 👍
Natalensis always do some fuzzy shit.
Nothing wrong with brown rice, specially in tiny jars, in bigger ones get’s difficult to shake., since it clumps up. I still use it for grain 2 grain masters. And yes, cultures produce more heat/ condensation digesting brown rice than in any other grain, IME.

I just don’t like it.

You just need to work on your sterile technique.
Can you walk us through it? Maybe there’s an error you didn’t see.

This one in particular was from a commercial store (I dont want to plug their name) while all my other bins are pin mold free. LC injection after putting on new needle tip on under a flow hood. LC, spawn, and sub provided by the store.  I only have this issue with the store bought stuff... was curious as how to avoid it with my own homemade ish which thankfully has not met the same fate.
Looks like someone was nice enough to provide some literature. I Clearly haven't read everything but all advice helps.

I find it appalling that a flow hood is the first contraption folks buy for this hobby nowadays. Just throw money at mold.

Self-made flow hood! Had a gift card to the store. Only 3 of 50 agars made have been contaminated with my rookie techniques. Would love to throw money at the mycelium to grow instead lol. Finding it tough for this to be just a hobby. Slowly turning my spare room into a mush grow center week by week with this forums help :mushroom2:

try to make sure there’s nothing getting in between what you’re working and the flow of air.
You shouldn’t be getting contamination if you’re using it correctly. Perhaps light some incense to see if if there are any gaps.

I learned a lot and grew plenty of mushrooms with a 110 qt SAB. But I can hardly imagine going back to that now that I've experienced an FFU.

Sterile technique is important regardless, just happens to be a different technique with sterile air flow than still air. I'm glad I started with the $20 solution before spending real money on tech though. If I bought something expensive and then realized I didn't enjoy the hobby, that would have sucked.

Self made flow hood, you say? Hope you mean a HEPA filter and an appropriately sized blower and plenum rather than one of the YouTube box fan specials. 😬

They look fine, is there a reason you would suspect otherwise?

I don't like to eat coir, so I always cut the ends of the stems off before dehydrating. Otherwise

Good blue bruising on those.

I do not cut off the tips. I just kind of rub off the choir.
Tasted delicious in an omelette.

Man, hearing "delicious" used to describe cubensis mushrooms...

Does frying or salt and spices make it taste less vile? I just make tea so at least I don't have to eat the things. It still sometimes makes me gag.

I was hungry.
I simply made a three egg omelette. A sprinkle of cheese. The chopped mushroom. Just a touch of salt and pepper.

Thank you! I was concerned about the yellowish on top. I was misting them and didn’t know if that was bacterial.

Do cubes taste worse than other mushrooms or do some of you just really hate the taste of mushrooms?

I ate a few pans today and they were fine, but I think nats are the tastiest so far, kind of beefy flavoured :yummy:
