I've seen restaurants use some kind of a square, flat weight to set on top of a burger patty while its cooking. Idk what thats called, but has anyone used this for neatly compacting sub?

They're called steak weights and they'd absolutely work for leveling a sub. I wanna say I've seen pics of someone using one on here but coulda been a concrete finishing tool I saw who knows.

I considered some type of trowel first, but had the steak weight in mind for shoe boxes and such. Thanks for filling in the blank!!

I use a Grout Float, but a burger press would work too.

We always called them a bacon press, I'd fire someone for pressing a burger.

+1 for a grout float. Works well to flatten and clean the tub walls

Unless you need fancy or would use them for their intended purpose, just wrap a block of wood with wax paper or similar and glue another piece of wood on for your hold.

My posts are long winded and dense.
Supplemented coir experiments< Currently ongoing spring 2026.

~Agar~ 1000mL water = 1000g water. use ~1% agar...1% of 1000g is 10g.  For cubes, use between 1-2% nutes (10-20g). For pans use 0.5% nutes (5g).

Everything I have typed is purely fiction, and is purely for personal amusement.
All images I've posted are not mine and I am simply posting interesting things I found on the Google.

QQ: Do we still "fruiting conditions"?  "Old" way: spawn to bulk, keep in the dark until surface covered with myc, bring into the light, flip the lid for fresh air exchange.  Seems the "new" way is: spawn to bulk in a shoebox, put the box in a "normal room" with daylight and night, and leave that box alone until there are shrooms all over.  What is the current best method?  I've got several tubs that I left alone (hard, I'm a control freak), the surface conditions look good, on the sides of the tubs it looks like healthy myc, but sweet FA is happening in terms of pins and shrooms - all three tubs older than a month.

Surface conditions: droplets on the myc:

Side looks healthy:

Another tub with what I consider decent surface conditions:

Any thoughts?  TIA

You did your research :congrats:
You're correct that
1. Fruiting conditions right away, trying to keep surface conditions and fae balanced without too much intervention. Lids can be unlatched, flipped and/or rotated depending on the needs
2. Light is beneficial at all stages

Behold. WBS prep a 4th way:

This also works for straight millet.

Millet is good, but sorghum is also good to have, as well.

Honestly how do you go about getting millet? Only stuff I find has sunflower seeds and other junk in it. $40 for 50lbs is not bad honestly as I hear millet expands 30-40% it's size. Whole oats are cheap. I wonder if they grow better and give more nutrients.

You can get millet at the bulk grain/cereal areas at lots of grocery stores. It's more expensive, though, since that's for human consumption. I'd suggest eating the sorghum at a cattle feed store if you're on a budget. Wait, no, I mean buy the cheap WBS for mush cult.

The smart way to get cheap millet (and sorghum, since those are tiny grains, too) is to pull this stunt:

It's probably also worth noting that I strain the corn/sunflower seeds from my WBS so I only wind up with milo and millet.

Look at me go!

For reference, I clocked myself for 60 seconds of swirling my hand around and shaking the bucket. I started with 2000g of WBS and wound up with 815g of nearly all millet/milo. I did it again and got 830g. I'm sure you can find mesh screen already at the right size to just fall through if you're too much of a bleeding heart to savagely drill holes through a poor, innocent bucket and shake it a bit.

Cheap bag of WBS + $5 Home Depot bucket + drilling holes. $5 bucket is a worthy expense for the time saved to remove corn, seeds, shells, and whatever else. I only used the little shoebox tote for the demonstration. The optimal method of separating them like that is to drill the holes in one bucket, then set that bucket into an unmodified one.

Just put a mason jar or something in the unmodified bucket first to provide the needed gap for the grains to fall. Then you just swirl your hand around like this: *moves hand around in circular motion exactly as you'd imagine how swirling your hand should look*

Ta-daaa!

Drilled bucket also works for coir preparation. Put the drilled bucket in an intact bucket, add coir and water and let the coir hydrate. Pull the drilled bucket out, put the intact bucket on top, add water and the excess water drains out.

Is there an average number of days for pf tek jars to go from fully consolidated and in the water tub to harvest?

I don’t need an exact number but I’m going to be traveling for 4 days during this step (likely) in the process and trying to decide if I should let them fruit while I’m away, or try to slow down mycelium growth now by putting the jars in the fridge so I can wait until I’m back to go to the water tub.
