last winter I really wanted to collect monokaryons of all the cyan clade from my yard, well I really didn’t have time for that. I haven’t done any cult anything since February. So yesterday I took a few caps from across species/varieties and printed them to a single sheet of foil, and I mixed spores from each print and streaked a bunch of plates that I had stored. I think I’ve learned enough over the last couple years on making a patch that’ll fruit by next fall, but man, even once they pin they can make you wait to see what traits they show. I’m really excited about this.

Moved a couple tubs i moved indoors when it got cold a couple weeks ago, back out side. Looks like it’s pinning again.
I have 3 planter boxes that really aren’t doing much? Interesting, it was looking normal.

Question about cultivating Ps. Cyanescens for those willing to entertain it.

I started an outdoor bed of cyanescens this year but didn’t get spawn to bulk chips until July or so. I’m not expecting fruits this year because of the late start but it seems like the mycelium is really taking off - way faster than I had expected. I lifted some leaf litter that’s been accumulating above the wood chips and almost the entire surface is covered in rhizomorphic mycelium. My questions for the community are…

The leaf litter that’s covering the surface of the wood chips is almost exclusively cedar. I guess I didn’t appreciate how much leaf litter cedar trees produce when choosing the location and there is a large western red that serves as a canopy shading the bed. I’ve come to learn that cedar isn’t a preferred food source for wood lovers, but does the cedar leaf litter present issues for the grow if there is a somewhat established bed of alder chips colonized with mycelium?

I feel like the cover of leaf litter is allowing the mycelium to colonize the surface of the wood chips, would removing it harm or kill the mycelial growth? Should I leave the cedar shag or leave it let it decompose naturally without intervening?

I’m inclined to leave it and let nature take its course, but i’d be sick if it ended up negatively affecting the bed when it was preventable. sorry for the long post. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Leave it.
There’s a lot of confusion when it comes to cedar. The leaf litter it leaves is fine, it’s just like a casing layer, and helps the myc reach the surface of the chips and has a lot of pockets for air and moisture to move through.
Cedar chips arnt the best, but they do eat it, I got two yards of cedar a couple years ago and they are eating and fruiting off it, really just got going good on it this fall, they just don’t tear through it like alder or bagged mulch, it will last longer.
Cedar is not anti fungal, It is rot resistant.

Thanks Land Trout. I’ll let it be. I’m going to learn to stop micromanaging when it comes to this garden…some day. First it was critters, then drainage, and now leaf litter smh.

I value your advice and contributions to these boards. Thanks again for weighing in.

It never stops. It’s just how humans are wired, it’s hard for us to just accept that somethings will do better if we just let them do their thing on their own.

This patch is a real testimony to that. I planted it early 2021, mostly in oak chips, with blocks of alder sawmill sawdust, for some reason I capped the patch with a layer of cedar chips that year, it looked real nice but it didn’t produce anything till 2022, and only a few fruits. I didn’t  water it at all this summer, it’s right by blacktop and gets afternoon sun, we didn’t get a drop of rain from may? Till September with 100°+ temps(there was literally a long drawn out forest fire a few miles away), the strawberry and daffodil looked dead, the rhododendron right by it died from being too hot and dry, and the bed put up some of the first fruits of the season. It’s producing nicely still. I haven’t done a thing to that patch, other than move the strawberry clones around to create that nice living casing that they do. I’ll top it off with some pine this fall once I’ve got enough entertainment out of them. Also Psathyrella and inky caps grow all over the bed right with the cyans. Another cyeanescens patch (pic in wig)showed up a couple yards away from these. I really don’t know if this patch went underground and traveled over and created the new patch, or if it spread from spores or rodents from another patch or if they were just there to begin with but all I did was toss some woodchips on the ground, and cyans started growing out of them. I tend to think it’s a different genetic line, because they are a lot smaller than the fruits they look just a little different from the patches I did plant, but that could be a substrate depth thing.

A potted fruit plant can also be a mushroom bed.  I mulch all of my berry pots with chips and mushrooms.  Each spring I can turn 1 pot into 15 by dividing myc.  Berries all summer, mushrooms all fall.

These pots contain blueberries and azzies.

My cyan bed has been putting out one and 2 every few days, but I think the season is finally about to kick in. Colder weather and tonight it's going to start raining for a few days straight!





Also made a new bed for the yard. I put a bunch of sticks and branches in there before the mulch. Azzies are in the mulch in the corner, subs are in the wine barrel. I'm going to put cyan mycelieum in it after the season when I refresh the other beds.

My cup runneth over!  Thank you to Asante for starting me on my woodlover journey.  This is just today's harvest, from these pins I expect a bumper crop by the weekend. I might have let some of these get bigger but they were in super tight clusters and starting to get eaten by critters.

Over the past 2 years, these mushrooms have brought an incredible amount of healing to my life. I've all but stopped drinking alcohol, mostly have kicked depression's ass, have lost 75lbs, and have a much better relationship with my spouse and loved ones.  I've restarted playing piano after 30 years away (still sound awful) and have finally started working on a lifelong desire to play guitar. (still sound awful)  I look forward to a time when they are available to the average person with no stigma, and a good support network to enable their beneficial use.... like the shroomery.

Could be, but I’m almost certain they came in with a truckload of mulched topsoil we had brought in 2 years ago, as that’s the only place they have showed up.

Meanwhile, the big 10’ diameter patch i had tried to make only pushed up a few fruits last year, and none this year as it was taken over by competing nonactive species. It’s 200 feet away and on the opposite side of a house, so I can’t imagine spores from those few fruits made it over there, but who knows. My other 4 low-effort experiments never even grew any myc, but I had no expectations. Low effort, low results.

Yeah nice Mr Piggy, I made 2 planters with cyanescens, but it's 99% chips with a thin soil layer with grass. But I'd love to have blueberries too. How deep is the woodchip layer, 10cm?

For some reason my azzie patch was ran over by a competing fungi.. of maybe I accidentally cultivated the wrong mycelium (I think the latter as the entire bed has been taken over by another specie..).

But.. I have good news, after months I finally found a place I can rent. And it has a garden.. this time around nobody to tell me what to do, so I'll transform it into a woodlover paradise :rockon:

I really like the looks of cyanescens, their distinct caramel cap, wavy.. so I'll just expand these 2 flowerpots to more chips. Are azurescens worth growing for microdosing? 125mg of dried cyanescens is on the upper border of what I would consider a microdose.. but they definately give me good vibes.. I recall you mentioned azzies are more for the heavy lifting mentally (if I remembered correctly).. but yeah interested to hear if microdosing these is nice or so-so..

Honestly, I do not micro-dose.  It doesn't give me the benefits it gives everyone else.  I have to go macro or nothing. 

I definitely prefer cyans to azzies for fun-tripping.  Cyans make me love everything around me.  Azzies I do save for the heavy lifting, but they can also be fun.  These pots all come from a single stick I took out of Ft Stevens a couple of years back, I just keep expanding the pots.  They get reeeeeaaallly chonky in wood chips, I'm pretty excited to watch these pots go.

Depth wise I probably only have two inches of chips in there, so 5cm.  the rest all the way down is potting soil.  I find if I make the chip beds too deep they rot easier, so in potted plants where I'm watering all spring and summer I try to keep it around 5cm.

For real, they likely live in my boot and tire treads, on my shovels and rakes along with the yard pans Agrocybe and those puffballs with the black center. Not to mention the squirrels moving colonized acorns from bed to bed, and the moles working under the chips. The first real ovoids that ever popped up in this yard just came along with a blueberry that we transplanted from the old place even though I never had ovoid growing with that blueberry at the other place.
