Humans are not mathematical variables, Swami.

That is too bad. Things would be a whole lot easier, hence my association with Vulcans.

Would you pay for gasoline if there was an indeterminate chance (say 30%) that they would turn on the pump for you?

Clever,

You know how two people can be with eachother physically, but not really be together at all? Usually people are so wrapped up in the past or future (ego) that they miss being present with eachother. I think to be 'present' with someone...to focus your attention completely on them in the NOW...is the ultimate act of love and compassion.

God = Love = Consciousness = Awareness = Being Present

Pure awareness is love.

yes, I also think, that you first have to feel this love and compassion, then you can start to let this feeling manifest inside yourself, bringing it to presence.
The praying/meditating for the same benefit, makes in fact letting you feel almost the same, so it's surely not a false way.
Also, you have to be strong in your mind, to not be shaken by some evil threads to not develop hate and anger.
If you find yourself in a life-threatening situation, man should even solve this in a loving and compassionate way. Even if it means to kill, primarily before you were killed from a direct attack.
Of course it's better not to kill - in physical or spiritual ways. But if it's immediate necessary, do it with compassion and love.
The boarder is a very thin one, between the 'all and selfless true love and compassion' and your personal line to self-defense.
If you self-defend, try it with love and compassion...and best, with the means of your traitor. This will give him the chance to reconsider his treat, and will give you the opportunity not to bring selfish aversions into the 'struggle'- means keeping a kind of neutral.
So, of course it's the best way to get people loving and compassionate, too, is to live it in front of their eyes, with according selfrespect, not selfishness.

And of course it's true that Jesus lived this and inspired many many people with this way. I don't speak from the modern church, of course, too, even there are some priests in, who aren't that bad influenced by the unloving, uncompassionate and uninspired 'vatican', who again brings out all evil human attributes for the struggle of power and influence. Jesus didn't talk about a 'church' How even should he had, while he was so much occupied with doing his life
If an inspiration settles down to hard, there is almost always a risk to overdo it in the negative way.
Then you lost the inspiration about your inspiration !

Sorry about the bad english, but I just wanted to share my thoughts to you. It's often hard to find the right words for me.

Love and compassion to all of you...

You are looking at this sort of weird. There is no need to expect love or compassion back from others, but that doesn't mean you should not express it. To have love and compassion in one's heart at all times has it's own rewards in helping one understand or accept the actions of others. It also has many other positive effects on your psyche. Gasoline costs money, and you only have a certain amount of money to live so you must spend wisely, but love is free, and it never runs out as all humans have the capacity to be an infinite well of love and compassion.

lack of. Logic does not apply to people you at least should know that.

This is to both you and Hue: I never gave an opinion on how one should carry themselves.

The premise was made that what you carry will be reflected back to you and the evidence (personal and historical) does not bear that out. Simple.

So would you guarantee that if I express love/compassion towards others I will never have these things expressed back to me?

Care to make a wager?

C'mon, trendal...you know Swami didn't imply never. I agree with his point that reciprocation isn't guaranteed, but I'm sure we all see that being courteous increases the chances of courtesy being returned.

i want to make the people i come in contact with feel a little better, somehow.
so, i figured being loving and compassionate was the best way...and i still do believe its the best way.
most people enjoy that kind of a person(loving and commpassionate) and some dont. im still going to try to make everbody who runs into me on a day basis feel a bit better about things. if some dont like me, well, it doesnt bother me.
i refuse to go against my beliefs. if someone doesnt like my beliefs then thats cool. if it comes to violence, then i will try to be civil about it first, if that doesant work, then fuck it, ill lay back some jaws and split some wigs. i dont like viloence, but ill use it to protect myself and those i love. ive boxed since i was 12, and when i was in the peace corp, i learned other fighting techniques from arounf the globe...which was fun.

anyway, now we're off track and theres no way to gracefully end this.
so....later friends

All of your personal interactions would have to be altruistic - a secular term for selfless love. In other words, you become aware of a moment where you can help someone, or minimize suffering in another, so you do so.

Example: A woman has a flat tire on a rural road and seems helpless. Do you stop to help because she's drop-dead gorgeous and it's not a big deal to change a tire, or do you stop even for the old or unattractive woman because you can minimize someone's suffering. Are you acting for reward (even if the reward is only the temporary company of a gorgeous woman and nothing more, or the opportunity of making a pass at her - both 2nd chakra motivations), or are you acting from Compassion, which requires detachment from one's desires, from thought of reward, and for the alleviation of suffering in another. And, if you do notice that the woman in need is drop-dead gorgeous, can you still act from Compassion while noting and dismissing your desires. If so, the Compassion is pure and untainted, and true humility is in place.

Now, if the woman is grateful, and offers you some money, what is the effect on your pure Compassion if you (1) accept the money, (2) don't accept the money? Let's assume that you haven't acted from a mercenary intention (3rd chakra), and she offers you ten bucks. If you turn down the money because desire for reward was not originally present, Compassion retains its purity of intent. If you take the money, the woman will not have had this opportunity of experiencing altruism - a purely Compassionate, selfless action on your behalf. And you will have missed the opportunity of manifesting an act of pure Compassion. She might be surprised, or she might think you're crazy - until at some point when she 'awakens' and remembers the incident. I have been in both positions many times and they are memorable.

But then you thwart her chance to show gratitude. Accept the gift.

smile and laugh.  don't force it, if you're happy you'll be happy.  when you smile a genuine smile, others can't help but join in.  same with laughter.

you can do a number of other things.

I like to listen to other people talk.  Ask them really how their life is going and listen. nothing says acceptence more than active listening. to me this really helps establish a connection with another person.  why?  because you actually care enough to hear someone.

most important, be yourself!  you are lovable just as you are. no need to go any further than that.

Annnnnnd I had a light saber and my friend was there and I said "you look like an indian" and he said "you look like satan" and he found a stick and a rock and he named the rock ooga booga and he named the stick Stick and we both thought that was pretty funny. We got eaten alive by mosquitos but didn't notice til the next day. I stepped on some glass while wading in the swamp and cut my foot open, didn't bother me til the next day either....yeah it was a good time, ended the night by buying some liquor for minors and drinking nips and going to he diner and eating chicken fingers, and then I went home and went to bed.

Great insight as usual, Markos.

Looking at compassion from that perspective, what about someone who is empathic and minimizes another's suffering because they also feel the pain? Does their motivation become selfish if part of it comes from a conscious or unconscious desire to end the suffering they receive indirectly? Is there a different answer if it's a conscious desire vs. an unconscious one?

We know what loving kindness is: that gentle care and soft touch.

Meantime, on the "other side" we see things others might not see.

Compassion presumes we do have a knowledge that goes beyond what there is time to communicate, but we see a need to act immediately to help someone. With a soft and caring touch we may take some inexpicable action which may not seem loving at all due to what we know but cannot communicate. (it might be deluded so one needs to have practice in this)

Compassion, then, is the synchronization between beings of different beliefs (or differently advanced in the same belief) towards a generally improved state, with probable gaps in understanding on at least one side of the transaction.
