Re: Compassion [Re: Source]
    #2802690 -

These past months have made me reconsider my general understanding of the world, myself, and a relationship between the two (I started working at Starbucks, and I deal with a kind of selfish people I never knew existed). Sometimes I feel my attempts at being compassionate are useless, and will never amount to anything.

Markos, reading your posts reassures me that compassion is not a waste, and helps make a bit more sense out of this entire situation for me. Thank you :-)

this reminds me of a post a while ago where someone said "philosophers are insturments of the devil" because of how all the main spiritual teachers have had their teachings appropriated and used for evil.

I disagreed with that, and i disagree with the current assertion that compassion is a dead end, for similar reasons.

If people had REALLY followed what jesus taught instead of just nailing crosses to there warships, than things could have worked out.
and i think if people REALLY believed in compassion, or concern for others, instead of just using that word to justify things like the war on drugs, iraq etc as swami pointed out, than things could work out.

to back track, i totally disagree with your assertion that compassion is the basis for all societies, communist, capitalist etc. I think most of those are based on things like control, greed, fear etc, and not on compassion at all. Until we resolve THAT disagreement your whole point is essentially moot to me, as the whole basis is in my oppinion flawed.

I understand your frusteration or perception that all this talk of Compassion and love has got us nowhere but more hate and war, but i think its nonsensical to ascribe that failure to compassion and love themselves, rather than on the real culprit, which is the human inability to grasp those concepts on a mass scale.

As swami said, most people apropriate or misuse those terms for selfish ends, but truly compassionate people, who operate from a selfless perspective, bring nothing but good to the world.

If your sick of compassions failure to bring peace on earth, the best thing you can do is to start becoming more compassionate.

Peace

I dont think we can say that society is based on compassion and still causing atrocities. I think its more accurate to say that society is evil to the extent that it HASNT grasped compassion yet.

oh bother, I should have known that such a basic point couldnt be understood by a bunch of crusading coffee-shop liberals.

Have you read marx? what is the rationale for worker equality.

and once again, I NEVER (fucking!!!!) said acts of compassion were redundant.

I dont think any esoteric idea will be able to liberate people. Because its just that, esoteric... out there, ITs too far from people to grasp... It wont effect THEIR life.

Because of this we need "real world solutions", not like that crap you hear on the finance commercials... but real plans to really move society along... oh yeah... not based on far out ideas that people can grasp.. or that is so open to interpretation. The founding results could be... well, i think you already know.

well i hope this wasnt adressed at me, as im not a crusader, i spent very little time in coffee shops and i dont label myself a liberal. That said i dont seem to have understood this 'basic point' of yours...

or rather i understood you to be saying that we have been trying to base society on compassion but it hasnt worked, so we should stop flogging that dead horse. (very nearly your exact, original words)

all im saying in response is that our society is NOT built on compassion, it is built on a fear/greed/military/industiral framework that has very little to do with compassion, and secondly that compassion IS the best framework for dealing with other people and society.

I didnt call you names, maybe you shouldnt call me names?
part of how compassion works

Peace
