These were my first attempt at making agar. Decided to make a softer batch for germ plates..so instead of wasting these I intentionally contaminated them for the XP.

I've tried it and my issue was what your concern is. I wonder if drilling 2 tiny holes near the punch end would solve that issue

Why do my agar plates change color as the myc grows? Is it eating the food coloring or metabolizing it in some other way? Just curious. Thx.

Yeah I'm sorta the same in my mind, I went and got some metal straws today, I'm gonna make these 'sawn-off' straws so if something gets stuck I can poke it out from above with a metal skewer, which I'll grind the spike off.
I was hoping the straws would have a bit bigger circumference :shrug:
I also found a fat boy bong stem which I'll trial out a bit too.

The mycelium eats the food colouring as it grows and brings the agar back to its natural colour.
The colouring is used to get better visuals on the mycelium and its colonies, no nutritional content in it.

The plate on the left is almost 1 month old. You can see the colour has been sucked right out of it

Yes it is and to what affect is unbeknownst to us as of yet. None of it is good for humans though and it all comes with warning labels meaning it is bio active in a lot of ways. It is 100% not necessary for anything but aesthetics.
