Agar envy is right.  I don't get why but all my agar plates whether petris, condiment cups, no pour holy grail, etc all have tons of condensation.  I dream of the day I have cups this clear lol. I'm missing something in my technique.

Looking great Shroomsurf

There’s things you can do to clear up condensation, but for my taste it’s too involved for what is essentially a cosmetic procedure.

Unfortunately, that's bacteria. You might check out BRF pucks. Other's will have more advice to offer than me.

Yeah I've tried it & it comes right back. I know it's not a huge deal but those pictures are just too sexy to be denied there.  There's not even those Itty bitty water droplets on those cups. I figured no pours would be better with condensation but they're just as bad if not worse.  Maybe I'll slowly get better or just quit expecting so much from my agar attempts.

(the following statement does not apply to no-pour, obviously)

You can also avoid most condensation by pouring colder, stacking the  poured plates and putting back their original bag on top, let stand (unwrapped) 30min to 1 hour in front of FH/FFU or 24h inside SAB (covering arm holes would be a good practice but not absolutely necessary)

I’d say out of 50 plates I wind up with about 4 or 5 that are irreversibly condensation-stricken. If you give them a good amount of time to sit in their stacks, usually they turn out mostly clear.

Well mine do. I’m sure you’re stacking yours too. Environment I imagine makes a difference.

IDK man, it looks either like myc surrounded by bacteria or just myc on a very wet plate. I guess he will know soon enough tho

:whathesaid:

A lot of mine sit in the cabinet for a while wrapped up, and by the time I use them there’s very very few plates with condensation.

BRF has never suited me, have done WBS to bulk substrates for years. finally getting into agar, which is posing the obvious learning curve.

i will argue that it doesn't look like the bacteria i've had on a couple other plates (one an intentional sample from the air in my kitchen), but you may be correct. from the top of the plate I see fluffy, white growth like what would be typical of germination in grain jars. that being said it could very well be contaminated with mycelium growth on top of bacteria, in which case all my plates are likely unviable (real possibility, first batch ever using a new SAB).

will keep an eye on it and toss if you prove correct.

If they're bacterial, I bet those can easily be cleaned up. No need to toss anything here

Make some fake/dummie agar cups as buffers to put on top of the cups you pour...

I'm doing in 400ml 7gm/agar and 7gm lme with 1gm NY boiled and filtered before adding to agar/lme...

Then 20'ish in PC then pour about 140F with lazer gun real thin...

please don't take my previous reply as disrespectful or antagonizing, it's anything but! this is the first plate that's shown anything other than, well, nothing, or bacterial infection, so i'm quite stoked to see some fluffy white stuff instead.

you very likely are correct, and imma hold my breath that there's not a repeat lesson here haha. have lost six plates to bacteria (not from this inoculation session, those casualties were from the first session and the kitchen sample) so if these next nine go down that way, then i'm chucking the remaining plates as well since that would be a ratio of 15/20 contaminated and the five sitting in the fridge will be suspect.

wish i could get a pic from the top of the plate, there's just too much condensation to even get a blurry pic though.

definitely lurking hard here, though. these first ever for me plates are proving to be more challenging than anticipated despite being way simpler than processing grains or scaling out to bulk grows. it's truly an art form; one i didn't anticipate.

the fact that my plates all turned out with that sediment looking crap in em (believe that's the malt extract based on my readings) and i'm pretty sure they're too hard, then the condensation issue.... lots of mistakes to be learned from.

I definitely didn't take it that way. Agar pictures are notoriously difficult to take in focus, and then I go shooting from my hip based on a quick look. I definitely meant no disrespect, and I could absolutely be wrong. I should not have been so confident in my reply.

I too have been chasing down my agar tek. I've made pretty much every mistake you can make, and I'm still working on getting it dialed in. I feel your pain there. Lately, I've been better about changing only one thing at a time, and that has been helping a lot.

that's a good call out. for my next batch, i was debating adding activated charcoal. partially because i think the black plates look cool and partially because i think it'll help my newb eyes spot growth of anything sooner and easier.

but, i'm also thinking i need to either half the nutrients, so do 5g malt extract instead of 10g (per this thread: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/20930437/fpart/1/vc/1) OR i just need to cut both the agar and the malt extract by 30%, so do 7g of each to 500ml water.

that would be three variables changed in one go, so while i wait for the new plates to arrive, i'll contemplate your advice here and decide what's next. it's all experimentation, after all. plenty of time to try all the things!

perfect, that settles that!

after the earlier comments, i decided well, it's not a total loss if this thing ends up being contamed anyways, so why not try giving the plate a bit of a side-to-side shake and see if i could get a clearer pic from the topside. didn't take one of the whole plate, wanted to focus on the primary area of growth.

what y'all think? so far so good?

certainly looks like it has potential. Let it grow out a little further and you'll have a better idea in a few days.

Best to learn patience now. Everything in this hobby is a few days away, a couple weeks until 'whatever'...unless you get busy and put off harvesting for another day then your entire crop is black with spores
