My chip guys dropped off a load of fresh pine with some fir last fall and I put it right on my beds, no leeching, or fermenting, or anything.  The cyans, azzies, ovoids, and subs are all eating it very well, seems like they are eating it faster than the maple and oak I started them on, and the azzies are definitely eating it better than the alder chips i put on the beds.  Lots of needles and all.  The beds are pretty well established, so that may have something to do with it, seems like its not working as well for getting new beds started, but that could have more to do with it being winter.  the fir seemed like it may have been from a top, or a younger tree that grew fast, the logs on the older bigger firs always seem a lot harder and pitchier than the tops, so that may be something too.

Land Trout, Have you had any issues with one wood lover overtaking another? I've read some are concerned with the non-native Ovoids outcompeting other species. Have you seen this with your multiple species grows?

Agrocybe preacox is really aggressive.  I know it eats chips really quickly and the myc looks similar to psilocybe.  It really looks like it has taken over some cyanescens patches.  I hear wine caps will also take over a patch.  Most of mine grow well with lots of other mushrooms like psatherella, inky caps, tubaria, and have even had morel and ovoid growing together.  But as far as competition between psilocybes I can’t really say.

Thanks for answering! Definitely agree on the wine caps taking over anything within a 15 foot reach.

Most interesting indeed.

Yeah, I'm guessing a really established patch is much more capable of eating sub-optimal material. And if they *can* eat, the lower density of the confiferous material probably explains why they would run through it faster than maple and oak.

Perhaps really vigorous growth in hardwood pellets would enable the mycelium to start tearing into fir. Guess I'll buy several more sacks of pellets and see.

If you look at Psilocybe in the core western part of Portland on iNaturalist, around downtown, you'll notice that ovoids seem to have gained a foothold up in West Hills, and now appear to be spreading. There are now almost as many observations of ovoids in that area as cyans.

It will be interesting to see in the coming years if ovoids displace cyans where they have become established.

I'm really curious what P subaeruginosa would do in the PNW, in and around Portland and Seattle. I'm a bit surprised no one has reported a patch in Portland yet, considering the relatively high concentration of spore-buying hobbyists.

Interesting note on inaturalist as a data tool. Makes me wonder if people aren't expecting to see subs, so even if they do find them, they don't mentally register as that species.

Last winter, the healthiest, most robust psilocybe allenii patch I found was growing underneath some pine trees. There was hardwood mulch there too, but the mycelium really loved the pine needles because these had about 6-8 inches of medium to grow into and colonize. I took a few chunks of it home. They also produced some of the biggest allenii I found.
