Ovoids all over the place....or are they?
    #12995745 - 08/03/10 12:31 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

I was apparently absent for the recent development which has taken place with ovoids, that is their alleged appearances on the west coast, as indicated by the numerous observations which have popped up on mushroom observer.  Does anyone have any verification of these observations, or are they simply just subaeruginosas being mistaken for ovoids?  Or, to rephrase the question and take it a step further, are ovoids really a different species at all, or are they in actuality subaeruginosa being mistaken for a different species, perhaps as a result of having a slightly different morphology than usual because of it's eastward migration?  Could the eastward migration have caused an isolated segment of subaeruginosa to have slightly evolved into what we now believe to be ovoideocystidiata, and if this is the case, can we really call it a new species?

Granted, this conclusion may be based on my lack of understanding of how species are concretely identified/isolated from other species, and if this is the case, I would certainly be interested in a clarification of this matter as well.

Thoughts?

Psilocybe subaeruginosa occurs only in Australia and is similar to P. cyanescens or P. cyanofriscosa or P. azurescens.

The west coast material has been called P. subaeruginascens for a few years based on the ID of Guzman.

Peter Werner looked at the type collection for subaeruginascens (which is 100 years old) and found it to be different microscopically.

So we were calling it Psilocybe subaeruginascens sensu Guzman.

Then I got some ovoideocystidiata in the mail from Ohio and some San Francisco collections from Auweia and had the ITS gene sequenced.

The sequences were identical so we are now calling the west coast collections P. ovoideocystidiata.
