That reminds me of a joke...
What do you tell a woman with two black eyes?

To call humans 'rational beings' does injustice to the term, 'rational.'  Humans are capable of rational thought, but it is not their essence.  Humans are animals, beasts with complex brains.  Humans, more often than not, utilize their cerebrum to rationalize what their primal instincts, their preconceived notions, and their emotional desires have presented as goals - humans are rationalizing beings.

Im not completely sure that can can wilfully control our emotions, but I do believe that we can control our reaction to emotions.

For example a situation might provoke anger within us, we'll feel the anger arise, and we can either go with the nature of the anger and react, or we can just observe the anger arise, and pass away without getting carried along with it.

The answer is...
Nothing, you already told her twice!

I've been reading the book Skorpivo recommended, called "What to say when you talk to yourself", by Shad Helmstetter.

Based on what I've read, I think we can control our emotions.

Think about it. The guy in the book says that we are like computers:

"Each of us, along with our brain, has similar parts (to a computer). In us, the computer's video screen is comparable to our apppearance and our actions -- what we 'display' to the world around us.

In a human being, the computer keyboard is the same as our five senses. Anything we hear, see, taste, touch, smell--or anything we say to ourselves--is 'programmed' into our brain through our keyboard: our five senses.

A personal computer uses a 'floppy disk' to record the program and the information which the keyboard feeds to it. In the human computer, the floppy disk is our subconscious mind. Everything we experience is recorded--programmed--into our subconscious minds."

So, when we feel sad, angry, depressed, we should look at what we programmed into our brains that evoked those emotions.

All we need to do is reprogram our brains. Tell it how to feel about something. If someone cuts you off in a grocery store line, do you bring out the uzi? Or do you just back up a bit and let him in? Or do you kindly say, "I was there, asshole, excuse me."?

See, our feelings about things are there because of previous experiences. If we were raised to feel like we are not important, then someone cutting us off in a grocery store line may invoke rage from us. But if we start reprogramming our brains and telling ourselves that we are wonderful human beings, then it doesn't matter if we are cut off in line.

Almost everything that evokes a negative emotion in us probably relates back to an earlier event that was programmed into our brains, that then evoked a negative emotion, that resurfaces whenever a similar event arises. "There I go getting treated like shit, AGAIN!" And the rage level rises.

So, yes, imo we can reprogram how we think about things. We don't have to get pissed off, or experience other negative emotions.

Can I touch your uzi? *shudders with excitement*

Are you willing to touch it while it's fully loaded and pointed at you? *shudders with excitement*
