Seriously

Jesting aside I’ve been trying to be better about xfering just for the sake of transferring. For less than $200 you can get a mini fridge or even a full size on fb market place and store you extra “backup” plates in.

Wait a sec. You just leave the swab in the agar plate? I have a PE swab but never started it yet.

Yes n no, depends on how I feel. I streak a couple then break swab and dunk the tip into agar trying to keep the stick off the agar. The wood is more prone to contaminating. You can also use sterile tweezers and pull a little cotton off and set on agar.

My duder Im still struggling just to get less than 100$ for non-bill purchases. Standing in a hole over here! There is no extra agar fridge for me, not for a long time lol. I am pretty confident I must sacrifice them but thanks for the segway back to the first question

Hahaaa nice i like that. Also have a PE swab been too scared to mess up.
Shucks I suppose you could also just scrape some spores off the swab w cooled sterile scalpel too right?
Last time/first time tried literally swabbing the swab. It didn't go well. Got wrong spores germinated :frown:

D3 i fucking love those plastic plates man. Im a cheap bitch so im rocking pp5 ketchup cups as plates, but I bought a good amount of those plastic screw ons for cold storage. Have yet to see one contam (i dont wrap them), they hold up well and clarity is solid

I’m liking them for cold storage as well. A lil small for sitting on the shelf.

Can always send the extra plates to grain, use as masters and then g2g I keep a few pint grain jars around just for this.

IMO normal petri without the screw on lids would be choice petri. You gotta be quick as fuck and multi tasking both hands. Petris on my left utensil on my right and master in the middle

On a side note,

Got 9 reishi transfers finally pulling through!!

You sure did. :hatsoff:

Got a nice plate fruit that looked real dickish. It went on it's own plate and then to LC after that.

The plate in todays photo will get at least another transfer or two I suspect, before it starts showing me where to go with it for real. The plate fruit culture was a different, more aloof pattern. I think rhizomorphic and tomentose are too narrow of descriptors sometimes.

That PEA+ was from you too right? Got some nice T3-4's going but they're still nowhere close to deciding how they want to organize. I'll just keep going till they do or I get impatient and try some on grain like I often do...

I'm just over a month and a half into this hobby and am already doing this.

It's great fun. I'm about to do T4 xfers which started with a mazatapec print.
I've already put 6 plates to grain.
At this stage, the plates are now purely rhizomorphic.

There isn't really any point in putting them to grain because who knows if they'll fruit.

Despite knowing all of this, I'm doing more xfers in a few hours.

This is a great point.

In "The Mushoom Cultivator", Paul Stamets says

Quote:
Another aspect of the mycelial appearance is its type of
growth, whether it is aerial or appressed, cottony or rhizomorphic.

He also mentions a form of mycelium called "linear mycelium" which grows "longitudinally radial" and does not have "twisted strands of interwoven hyphae that characterize the rhizomorphic kind." He labels this type of mycelium as "intermediate".

Could we perhaps view tomentose, intermediate and rhizomorphic on a spectrum/continuum?

The myceliums position on the continuum can change due to various "natural" factors (environment, humidity, temperature) as well as "artficial" factors (transfers).

Maybe it's not even important to label the appearance of mycelium but after observing multiple forms of "rhizomporphic" mycelium it really makes you think.

The intermediate sounds like what we were talking about in another thread recently.

I always just thought of it as well organized tomentose growth but intermediate is a decent description.

It helps classify it, I guess.

Stamets also claims

Quote:
Linear mycelium canalso produce
abundant primordia but this usually occurs soon after it forms rhizomorphs.
