Spitball's Quick Rye Prep 13

This is part of my series "The Basics"
A Quick Way To Prepare Rye Berries For Grain Spawn
This rye prep tek is based on FooMan's WBS Tek. I basically added extra bath time because rye is much thicker than WBS.
Thank you eatyualive and blindingleaf for your support, knowledge, thoughts, ideas, and skill while I was experimenting with new grain preps.
There are many ways to prepare different grains, and if followed correctly, most work well.
Usually, I, like many people, follow a traditional rye prep like this one: How I do Rye Berry Prep. It has served most of us well, but I wanted something with a faster prep time and here is a result of my experiments.
I am abandoning the notion that rye needs a long soak time. The most popular reasons people give for soaking are hydrating the grain, hydrating or germinating endospores, and preventing burst grains. Doing the soak, boil, evaporate method is fine, but it isn't the only way.
To follow this tek correctly, don't try and combine it with the traditional method. It is different in many important ways. Just look at it with an open mind, post-pone your judgment, there will plenty of time for flaming later.
Here we go:

The PC I'm using holds ten quart jars so I'm preparing enough for that.
In this tek, I will use 3 dry quarts of rye berries and about 1.5 tbls gypsum.
Put water in a large pot. You need enough to cover the grains well because they will soak up a lot of it. I used about 6 quarts of water.
Bring water to almost, but not quite a boil. I let the water get to 205F in my experiments. But, 190-200 seems a better range.
Once the water reaches 195F (what I currently do), turn off stove, remove from heat and pour in your dry rye berries and spread gypsum out over the top. Do not mix. Put the lid on and set a timer for 45 mins. No, I did not rinse the rye first; the rye is dry.
After 45 mins, pour the rye in a strainer to drain. Shake it around a couple of times and immediately give it a decent rinse under a cold tap. The cold water rinse cools the grain and prevents steam evaporation.

You don't have to be thorough with the rinse. Just kind of rinse it off a little. Then let drain some more. I let it sit for 30 mins like this.

After 30 mins, load in to jars and put on lids. This will fill 10 jars up a little more than half way.

Put jars in PC and sterilize following standard procedures.Pressure Cooking Basics

Once sterilized and the pressure drops, you can remove them to cool. Once cool enoght to handle, give them a shake to distribute moisture. You can do this again later too.
Still hot out of the PC

The next morning, I shook them up again.

Here is a key to this tek: If you let the rye sit in the water too long, too many grains will pop and you'll get a sticky mess just like with traditional prep. I set my timer for 30 mins for the bath and check it. There were no popped grains. I set it fr another 5 mins and there were a couple few popped grains. I let sit for another 5 mins and saw more popped grains. This is how I decided 45 mins was the right amount of time.
You may want to follow a similar process to get the timing down. After a few times, you'll get a feel for how long works for you.
Some things you will notice
If you are used to the soak, boil, steam method, you will notice some big differences along the way. You will mostly notice the rye is wet at most of the steps. This is okay because the excess moisture will be absorbed by the grain as it cools.
For this tek, the rye needs to be wet on the outside before it goes in the PC. If it's dry on the outside, it will be too dry later. This is the same principle as the No-cook WBS method and in FooMan's WBS Tek.
The same is not true for the soak and boil method because the soak and boil method puts a lot of moisture in the grain already. This is an important difference.
Rinsing while hot prevents as much steam evaporation. At first, I thought the gypsum would get washed off when I rinsed it, but there is plenty there.
Before you start flaming or doubting, I've read many of the posts on soaking, hydration, and endospores. I seriously doubt you will be able to present in new info I haven't already seen.
If you have not tried this tek, then you have nothing to offer and your criticism will be pointless.
I would like to see some honest attempts at this with posted results. If it turns out to be bunk, I will certainly admit defeat because I don't like giving bad advice.
Update:
I just G2G'd these 10 jars in my SAB using one of these masters to make more grain spawn.

2 Days

Some jars got more grain from the master than others.
9-15-2014
on 9-7, 8 days ago, I G2G'd these 20 jars using this prep. I shook them after G2G, then on the 11th. They are almost 100% colonized. I gave them a courtesy shake right after this pic to see how well they recover.
I used 5 masters of different "limited genetics". One half full master went in to 5 receiving jars. I won't do a play by play update, but I will share the final fruiting results. They will be dunked and spawned using my CVG, monotub, and spawning and fruiting teks.

Interesting. Hey what about Blanching your grains? Same tek, but instead after you pull them out of the post, before you rinse drop them in an Ice bath. In theory it would prevent internal grain cooking after coming off the heat, and also do the job of the rinse.
Im go try it!

nice im eager to see if this works out. i think it will. and if it doesn't it may be adjusting the bath time. but those grain jars look good. how do they look compared to your normal prep once pressure cooked?

They look the same as my usual prep on this run. In the previous experiments, they actually looked a little more plump.I think one or two more quarts of water would be a little better. They soak up a lot of water doing this.
