Grinch, try transferring to a non red plate see if they start bounce back. I found with mine each transfer they would get weaker and weaker on red. Took me a long time to connect the dots and even then took someone else doing research. Then I went back and looked at all my pics and noticed a pattern. That’s why I did the agar color experiment.

Just looked at my food coloring ..... Red 40, a synthetic colorant. I see no harm in my plates, tho I too use as little as I can.

Red #3 is the main culprit. I haven’t gotten ahold of a dye with strictly red 40 but imagine it would be fine. I just bought a nee brand to try out. Had high fructose corn syrup though. I may need to lower my nutes a little. The blue is really pretty only poured a 10 stack with it to test.

I did a batch of purple plates with red3 in it and had some interesting things happen. Not only did I only get 1/20 to germinate, but just for kicks I took one of the plates that didn't germinate and I had my dog sniff it/blow her nose on it and she licked it. Nothing at all has shown up and it's been 10 days since she did that experiment

Just to throw a curve into the color discussion, I just had a batch of celtreats and holy grails that I did using the same charcoal that D3 uses that were just about useless. I trust D3's recipe so I figure that I must have done something wrong somewhere. But this is the first batch that basically stopped transfer growth cold and wouldn't even germinate an lc.

I just did an all new batch with no color last night using all of the same ingredients and ratios minus the charcoal. So we will find out if it was ingredients or just a silly mistake. I trust that the charcoal was not the issue, but one less variable.

Just saying that I like the tests that D3 did, but I wouldn't rule out other factors for a really bad batch of agar.

Every year I start my cultures over from prints gathered within the last season.
Seems only a natural thing to do. Only culture I kept was the PESA haha.

is red dye containing Anthocyanins and Paprika Extract okay to use?

also, is there any kind of food colouring that is not okay to use? they sell gel in my local shop, but does it even matter?

thanks

I use gel, natural dyes tend to break down in the PC turning colors. Not sure on those chems you mentioned.

I’m trying out a new brand but it uses high fructose corn syrup. Will see how it performs or if different at all. I like the color of blue

thank you. gel it is then.
i will just avoid red altogether. i was mostly asking because i have some dishes i already started on red agar (using anthocyanins and paprika extract according to the container). my first dishes had crazy contams and my second ones are only a couple of days in so its a little early to tell if it will effect it. guess i will wait and see

i agree, that is a nice blue

thanks

I've been trying to find a food grade glow in the dark pigment. Would be pretty cool.

that would be cool!
just had a little look and it seems you can do it with tonic water, but it needs UV light to glow. i also learnt that the part that makes it glow is an inedible bacteria.
that was just a quick look though so could be wrong, im guessing you came across that info already anyway.

good luck, i would love to see this come together!

I may have somethin lined up soon but I'm waiting for the pigment manufacturers to call me back and give me a straight answer as to whether or not there's anything in it thats toxic.

Tonic water is a carbonated beverage that has a chemical called quinine dissolved in it. ... Under an ultraviolet "black light," the quinine in tonic water makes the water fluoresce a brilliant, bright blue (even though only a relatively small amount of quinine is dissolved in the water)

Wild relish I clone taken to brf agar, took a few tries but eventually worked out. Ganoderma looks really different, might try a different recipe to see if I can get more aggressive growth
