I hear ya. I meant when you bury the tip in the agar.

Kinda tricky to do so without having your fingers go over the open plate just for a second or so, but I guess jammin' it in while the plate is sideways is the solution.

Thanks for the tips Aka.

With your palm-down left hand, grasp the lid of the plate between your pinky finger and index finger.  Your middle finger and thumb are ready for duty.

Lift the lid straight up off the plate and hold it horizontally to cover the plate.

Use your left middle finger and thumb to hold the swab while your right hand shaves the tip with a scalpel and deposits the fibers on the plate; or use scissors to cut off the tip and place it on the plate.

Lower your left hand and cover the plate.

I recently acquired some albino swabs and had the same concerns as you... I did this: I streaked 5 plates with 1 swab, did a total of 10 with 2 swabs and overall I think 7-8/10 germinated, I took transfers from the best one. I’ve read someplace that softer agar helps germ the spores better 🤷🏽‍♂️ It was my first time using a swab and I breached the surface of the agar on a few plates but it seemed to help

What's everyones input on getting swabs to germinate?

Streak a few plates and then bury the swab in the last?

Use scissors or tweezers to cut/pull small amounts of the cotton tips off and drop onto multiple plates?

I've got so many great varieties now on swabs and i'm paranoid because only having two swabs of each variety means i've only got a handful of chances to get something viable before i've lost the variety entirely.

Would love to hear from several people on their best practice for using swabs as long as possible.

@my last response, sorry forgot to quote

I'll try softer agar and see what happens. Thanks for the suggestions Shroomoissuer

Got 15 plates poured and knocked up. I tried a new recipe so hopefully everything goes as planned. 400ml grain soak water, 8 grams agar-agar, 3 drops of food coloring.

5 each of PE, APE and GT. I think in the future I'm going to leave out the food coloring since I'm finally pouring clear plates.

Lol I just noticed the bag in your signature, I wonder what percentage of frisbee golfers like shrooms.

I bet a lot based on my limited experience.

You're definitely right lol. If I had to guess I'd say somewhere around 80% or better, at least in my area.

I used to play about 10 rounds a week (league, practice and a couple 'hustle' rounds). It wouldn't be too hard at all for a guy to share a full harvest at an active course in a weekend.

I just made a bunch of grain (wheat) water plates for the first time, too.  Curious to see how well they work for you, I just swabbed mine for LAGM the other day so nothing to report yet.

Purple Mystic T-5

All of my transfers for Purple Mystic have been similar to this one from my T-5 group.  About one-third of each transfer is very slow. In these shots, it's the 4 o'clock to  7 o'clock slice.  It eventually fills in but I assume this means I'm transferring something bad along with myc.

I'm taking my transfers from the opposite side of the slow growth.  I'm planning on continuing to transfer until I get consistent growth.  Any other suggestions?
