Covid is thought to be now 6 times as deadly as the flu.

It is on public record that when the medical experts were assessing the fatality rate at close to 4% Trump said in a conference he thought it was under 1% - and got roasted for being anti-science. Well, he got this one right.

Correct but early on it was thought to be 40 times more deadly - quite a difference. All I am saying is that the optimal response to pandemics depends on the combination of infection rate and fatality rate. Based on the inflated assessment of the later most of the World chose the containment strategy which is now failing spectacularly.

At one point it was said to be like 9%.

We’ve never studied a virus at this scale. It’s going to be years until we parse the data and have any real conclusions.

So in a surprising way Trump was right - the fatality rate of covid is well under 1% and his flu analogy was not out of order. It has also proven correct that therapeutics and vaccine are the most promising approaches.

No it’s not. Spain did a large scale antibody study and based on the result determined the CFR to be ~1.2

Yes it is. The current (7/10) CDC best estimate is 0.65%

What I read yesterday was something like .5 to 1.5%, which I guess isn't that bad considering a lot of the victims were near the end of life anyway (but a lot of them weren't). What scares me is the permanent damage a lot of the survivors have.

Perhaps you meant to say they think the threat is exaggerated?

You're more right than wrong, but some are taking exaggerated to the extreme where there is a very fine line between that and fabricated. Some here, and some on conspiracy (but I guess that's the point there).

At any rate, I think this part of the debate is about over, with the current news reports saying it's now worse than ever. I mean with rational people. Some people here will still say it's exaggerated as long as they're not the one on the ventilator.

No, what I said was the 63 people that died during the riots.. the CRITERIA for their death is just... "died during the riots."

You want to add up the number of people who have died in Chicago, New York, Portland and Minnesota during the rioting? Let alone all the other cities? Crimes and murder is already WAY up.

Trust me, this has already surpassed the L.A. rioting. Minneapolis ALONE as a city has the equivalent in damages to the L.A. rioting already... add all the other cities in and it's WAY past it.

I don't think many people died in Chicago because of rioting. People in Chicago are always dying from the same thing: drug/gang crime.

The latest developments in Portland and Seattle fit in the the scenario of slow descent into chaos but things will start looking grim when the states and feds run out of money. Social systems die by going bankrupt.

Lol a couple blocks of civil disobedience has very little tangible effect on the economy unless the leaders decide to make it so. The Portland situation is manufactured political theatre by a president who thinks making liberal states appear like they’ve decended into lawless anarchy is his key to winning re-election.

Think about how much energy, rhetoric and resources he’s investing into preventing property crimes. He’s also talking about sending tens of thousands of troops into cities to prevent a couple of extra murders. Even if his plan worked as advertised, and say he reduced homicides in chiacgo by half, that would amount to less than one life saved per day. Meanwhile we are losing 1,000 people a day to covid and his attitude about that is “it is what it is.” It’s perverse.

More people died yesterday from covid than were murdered in Chicago in the past three years. Covid deaths are almost entirely preventable and we know how to do it. Other western countries are seeing a couple deaths a day. We are on the verge of seeing covid kill more people in a week than are murdered in a year in the US. A spike in homicides sucks, but the lives being lost to covid are so much more consequential to the American people and the American economy. It’s not even close.

Civil disobedience has a big effect on the market perception of system coherence which is the foundation of fiscal stability. Countries can borrow money only against their perceived ability to tax. When states turn against feds and executive loses control of the federal infrastructure the bankers are beginning to scratch their heads. As with all perception based processes things then move quickly.

Get a grip. The protests are disruptive to a couple blocks in a couple cities. You know this is all manufactured to provoke outrage in a certain demographic right? If this was really about law and order, then why the fuck has this been going on for weeks? Trump doesn’t want to solve the problem. He wants video of protesters and troops battling in the streets.

The bankers are more worried about the fact that this country is now isolated from the world because of a completely dysfunctional government. They have no confidence in what the business climate will be in six month or a year. They are concerned that the US is now running monthly budget deficits that are double the annual deficit seen just a few years ago.

Yes, the budget deficit is what will trigger off the fun part. The show of national disunity following 2016 did not spook the bankers because the economy was going great. Now the game has changed because the stress of covid has exposed the social fractures which are only getting wider.

The last week saw around 280k daily new cases daily globally and 3/4 were outside the US so not sure which rock you are under. The containment strategy is failing almost everywhere. Other countries managed to temporarily suppress the infection numbers through co-ordinated lockdowns but there is only so long you can shut down the economy for. The US, being a geographically large country with a two-layer governance structure, never achieved a choreorgraphed shutdown but in the end it does not seem to matter all that much because covid is back globally.

The survival strategy from now on will depend on not losing social cohesion more than on what is happening at the local hot spots. Emerging phenomena progress exponentially and it does not take much to spook the financial markets. If the general perception is that the fabric of the society is loosening the game will be up.

The US has 5% of the world’s population and 25% of the cases. We have out of control spread. There are plenty of countries where that is not the case. One of the ways these countries will be able to control spread is by not allowing people from countries that do not have control. If you are even allowed to enter Canada from the US, for example a Canadian citizen, you are subject to a monitored 14 day quarantine. That is how low this country has fallen.
