I added a picture to help get across why you don't want that in your SAB or home for that matter, yes you have spores but a little patch like that contains billions of spores. Another simple but effective method is a clear bag SAB for those type of transfers but I see a lot of preaching about never open a contamed jar inside, that includes your SAB, it is inside. One opened contained culture can ruin your efforts forever or even worse, Kill you!

Thanks so much for all the wisdom everyone.

Boogie: here is the other plate. I hope the image serves.

Shaper: Thanks for the insight into the technique of cutting the sample. That was very valuable to me.

Professor X: I will be certain to quarantine that plate immediately and keep a close eye on it. If it turns out to be what you say, I will immediately dispose of the plate. Far far away. On fire.

Yeah trying to decipher things from photos are a pain some of these photos are pretty fuzzy and hard to tell what's going on ..

But that one looks better for sure ..

The other plate the only thing you can do is transfer from the leading edge as stated and try to get it into the center Haha.. and just keep us posted

I see what you're getting at, but I think that this is a massive over-reaction to a pretty common thing. You're unlikely to grow something that will kill you. That's an unhealthy level of paranoia.  This is a study from the UK, but basically aspergillus is in the air all year round at low levels

That said, I really just recommend tossing the plate.

Clean your SAB, have good sterile technique, and don't do dumb things and you'll be fine. I've transferred safely away from mold on a plate of agar more than once, it's not that hard.

I agree as long as you are positive of the type and it has few toxic strains. This one in particular is a puny mold if it AN. A good genetic strain mushroom will actually eat it.

Alright, 48 hours after the last pics, here we are.

Firstly, the 'mold' plate has turned out to be, well, mold.

Bonus pic from the other side of the plate

I think it's time to throw that guy out.

The other plate has shown growth but at a much slower rate than the above plate. The agar is split because on this plate I wielded my inoculation loop like a hatchet.
Here is the other side:

If you zoom in, I believe you should be able to see the edge of the growth relatively clearly, this time?

This is looking good! Especially if that tear is from your inoculation. You can see the myc possibly started in the crack, which if that's where your loop cut in  then that totally makes sense. Looks super fluffy, which isn't the best indicator, but the uniform edge and white color give me a little hope.

Definitely time to chuck that contam'd plate. If you're really paranoid, mix up a small tub of bleach water and dunk it in that before putting it in the garbage. And definitely take it easy with the loop, Muscles! That one is looking good thus far.

Thank you friends. Would there be any education from letting the mold plate grow out? to see if there's a harmful mold in my house perhaps?

If not, I'll move it out of quarantine and into bleach/fire.

I'll post further pics of the healthier looking sample tomorrow.

Is it wrapped? If it's wrapped just don't open it and you'll be fine. I have a good chunk of old plates with weird shit growing on them that I never tossed because I kinda like them.

I posted two threads on the first page that can help you ID them once they grow out a bit. If you really really really want to know if there's harmful mold in your house there are places you can send your dish off to that will tell you what you have growing on them... though if there's also active mushroom spores on there they may not be so happy with what you sent them :lol :.

Shaper that's awesome. I ran across the first thread, I'll give it and the second link more investigation.

I think I might give that plate a week or two, see what's what.

I'll keep in mind what you said about sending it off for ID haha. Good lookin out.

5 Days later here is the 'good' plate.

I'm unsure. It looks, as Shaper called it, fluffy. No dark center like the obviously contaminated plate had.

My original 3 plates are coming up on their 3-week mark on Friday. Still zero signs of life. Should I re-inoculate those bad boys?

From the bottom it looks like it's hiding bacteria. However, I am just now getting good at agar and telling contams. So maybe wait for someone else to chime in.

I had a low germination rate with my spore syringe as well. 4 plates nothing and 2 plates had 3 growths. I never tried putting more spores on my un-germinated plates. You should try, but I would also make new plates while your at it to just to increase your odds.

Your fluffy fucker is growing pretty slowly, which is good in a sense because it's less likely to be mold. My growths were slow and fluffy too and after I transferred it I got some rhizomorphic growth. Here's my growths from my journal

Growth looks more rhizomorphic in some places and tomentose in others. Below are close-ups on tray 3. Time to transfer??

edge growth (first seen), center growth (second seen)

Date: (day 10) 4/14/2019 @ 2:00pm
Transferred to 6 plates, see following post

Date: (day 13) 4/17/2019 @ 11:00pm

Center growth, Edge Growth (day 13 since inoculation)

And here is the transfer from the edge growth:

Edge-9:00 (Day 11 since transfer)

It's possible after a transfer, you'll get some vigorous growth.

Thanks Socrates, I'll be keeping a close eye on them. The prospect of potential faster growth time after transfers is a soothing thought, for sure.

Yeah, I think it's at the point that you just need to transfer and see. I like to fuck around with a lot of different edible/gourmet mushrooms and their myc is very different from cubes. Often I have no idea what it's supposed to look like, and I just transfer hoping for the best. It's usally not until my first transfer if I can tell whether it worked out or not
:prayer:

Time to get crazy!

Also, I went back through the thread and I didn't see it, but what was your agar recipe? Sometimes slow fluffy growth means it's too nutritious and doesn't encourage the myc to move/grow. It may be worth lowering some of the nutes in your recipe to see if you can coax out some rhizo growth (not much, maybe like 1g of lme, or whatever you're using, less).

1.0% Yeast Extract, 2.0% Peptone, 2.0% Dextrose, 1.5% Agar.

I am thinking you're right Shaper, and that my plates are, at the least, sub-optimal for germination.

Those original 3 plates hit 3 weeks tomorrow, still no signs of anything.

Edit: Went ahead and did the first round of transfers. Fingers crossed.
