Mushroom drying
    #25846877 -

I harvested some mushrooms and had them under a fan for about 16-18 hours.
People were coming over and I could not leave them out longer.

I put them in a jar with desiccant (Calcium Chloride) but these were some really thick mushrooms and I think they were a bit wet inside still.

I left them in the jar for around 20 hours and they are smelling a bit funky now. I have put them under a fan again after I cut the bigger pieces in halve  to speed up the drying process.

2 questions:
1. Will they still be safe to consume?
2. If I cut them in halve will they loose potency with more exposure to oxygen?

20 hours isn't that long. They're probably fine and no they won't loose any noticeable potency but I imagine they won't look very appetizing. Also I would get a dehydrator if you're gonna continue growing

Fan drying sucks, desiccant drying sucks, use a dehydrator you want to dry them as quick as possible to avoid potency loss and to preserve them, either use a dehydrator or make tea with fresh mushrooms and freeze for later

Get you a dehydrator, they’re  affordable these days. Like $30 at Walmart or on Amazon.

I have heard bad things about desiccants.. I used to use my propane oven back in the day, it had a pilot light and I would just leave it open a crack, worked great.

I just harvest these boxes this afternoon and went and picked up this dehydrator for 50 bucks..
If getting a dehydrator wasn't an option I would air dry on screens in a room with a space heater.

I don't think cutting them in half will effect potency but the longer it takes to dry them will.

Thanks guys. Will definitely invest in a dehydrator before the next batch is ready.

For now this is the only option I have.

Will look into making tea as well.

Have a great day!

U need heat and air flow to dry. Not just air flow. Heat is more important.

You shrooms should be OK, just dry them as fast as possible.

Dessicants are not for drying stuff with, it's for keeping the environment free from water vapors so that dried material can remain stored in a dry place.

That funky smell is normal, too.  When they dry, they smell like feet.

I've been drooling over this dehydrator - it can hold up to 30 trays it says. Of course it's like 150$ and trays are 26$ per 2 on Fungi Perfecti, seems the normal price range for it, but I found some on EBay in the 60-80$ price range maybe not a bad investment.

I remember running 3 of the cheap dehydrators at a time with like 10 stacks on each

I have the same one but i didn't pay 150 for it lol. Like 79 or 89 at farm and fleet and ive got damn near close to 30 trays if not 30 now. Plus the other two smaller dehydrators.

Yea that was with just a cursory search I looked around a bit and was able to find the price range you got for

When my Walmart ones burn out or maybe sooner I might invest in that myself- 30 trays is a nice stack! Can probably get a lb at once (dried) at least yea?

Rent just kicked my ass, so I don't have the money to invest in a dehydrator for a couple weeks. Has anyone tried drying in a toaster oven set on low? Mine has a convection cooking setting so there would be some airflow.

A solid plan, no doubt. I'll probably do that but I was just curious if the toaster oven would suffice for a small dried batch.

It may get them dry enough quick enough, but you also run the risk of burning them or losing some potency if they take to long to dry

Do you have access to a small space heater? Thats what I would use if I couldn't get a dehydrator..
It would take much longer but if its in a small space like a closet I'm sure it would work... like a giant dehydrator lol

Toaster oven sounds sketchy. Make tea like DnD suggested if no dehydrator or space heater is available.

I definitely have a little space heater that could fit in a closet, but not too sure what the set up on that would look like.

Put the space heater in the closet with you're shrooms. Keep the closet closed. Do you understand how a dehydrator works? It uses heat and moving air to dehydrate food and herbs..
